    Around three in the afternoon on Saturday the fifth of April 1980, while visitors’ hours are in full swing, the vampire Armand walks into Stony Brook University hospital on Long Island with a large bouquet of spring flowers.

    A little clumsily – as he’s just gotten back into the habit – he signs in under the name Armand du Lac and lets himself be escorted to the room of Alice Shaw, stalwart political activist and first-time mother.
