The Daily Planet

World on the Brink of Invasion: Where is Superman?

April 15th

By Lois Lane

Last night, at 2307, massive spacecrafts appeared over many of the largest cities in the world. In light of this, the Justice League has deployed their intergalactic diplomacy team to determine the intent of these faraway visitors. League Members such as Martian Manhunter, Green Lantern, and Batman have been documented as part of this effort.

In the past, this team has faced public criticism for being an unelected, mostly alien representative of Earth’s interests, a controversy which was later settled when the League signed a good-faith agreement with the United Nations.

Amidst this delicate situation, one member of this diplomacy team is notably missing from any of the League’s current efforts. When asked about Superman’s alleged disappearance, and what that meant for the Justice League’s efforts in protecting the Earth, Batman was documented as stating, “He’s Superman. He hasn’t given up on you.”

This is a live story that will be updated with additional details as they come.

Comm Link Transcript: Batman [OUTGOING ONLY] - April 15th

0739: Hal is checking the other ships for any of Clark’s biometric data.

0741: I know it looks bad, you don’t think I fucking know that?

0743: He wouldn’t just disappear in the middle of the night.

0747: He’s still in there. I know he is.

0748: Stop telling me what I already know.

0750: Fuck this. I’m turning off my comms.

[Communications have gone offline.]

0821: I found him. I need an extraction now.

0822: Diana, do you copy?

0822: Diana!

0827: Disregard on the extraction. Clark’s got it.

0830: Batman to Justice League. Superman is back online.

Justice League Mission Report: Xanatharian Invasion

Documenter: Batman

04/14 at 2307, starcrafts appear over New York, London, Brazil, Seoul, Tokyo, Singapore, Paris, Moscow, Shanghai, Istanbul, Tehran, and Cairo. These starcrafts are identified as Xanatharian in origin by Green Lantern. No open hostility noted upon initial contact.

Around the same time, Superman disappears and becomes uncontactable. A meeting is called to discuss the potential for harm. Refer back to Report 1034-27654 for full details on said meeting.

Green Lantern, Martian Manhunter, and Batman are assigned for a diplomacy mission. Green Lantern states that he believes the Xanatharians have no intent on invading.

On 04/15 at 0730, Green Lantern scans all Xanatharian ships for any traces of Superman’s biometric data. It is unknown to him at this time that all Xanatharian ships employ signal dampeners.

At 0750, Batman disconnects from the shared communications channel. Batman enters the ship over New York and determines that the ship is intended as a research facility. Based on observations, it appears that Xanatharians are a race of collectors who travel the universe looking for rare oddities.

Batman later finds Superman imprisoned in a cell mimicking the conditions of a red sun. Superman is conscious and unharmed, but lacking powers.

Batman and Superman escape the Xanatharian ship. Xanatharians appear upset, but not hostile. Green Lantern negotiates with Xanatharians, upon which they agree to leave in exchange for a promise of protection against hostile aggressors.

The documenter of this report would like to note that the decision to turn off shared comms was not due to partiality. The documenter of this report does not believe that he is compromised in any way by certain relationships to other members, and wishes to put on record that he would have done the same for anyone else in the League. Except for Green Lantern.

World’s Finest Couple? | Opinion

May 5th

By Cat Grant

Superheroes are, by general definition, celebrities. Certainly, they have different responsibilities and power than the average pop-star or actress, but it seems that they’re not entirely immune to the life of fame.

According to numerous witnesses, Metropolis’ own Superman was spotted having a secret rendezvous with the Dark Knight of Gotham himself atop a cathedral tower late last night. One onlooker who only went by the name of Todd claimed that he saw Superman hold Batman’s hand, saying, “they looked like they were having a real private moment.”

Could this be a snapshot into a relationship between two of the most prominent heroes on Earth? Is this a workplace romance budding between close coworkers? Nobody knows, but one thing is for sure: we will certainly be keeping a close eye on how things evolve from here.

Did you see this?

Bruce:

What the hell?

Clark:

I know.

I’ll talk to her, see if I can get it taken down.

Bruce:

Don’t. It’ll just look suspicious.

Plus it’s not like it’s real.

Clark:

Still.

This is so stupid.

God forbid we talk to each other at night.

Bruce:

It’s just because things have been quiet recently. I’m sure once aliens invade again people will go back to writing articles about how we don’t do our jobs properly.

Clark:

I honestly don’t know if I’d prefer that over dating rumors.

Bruce:

You want to explain this to the League, then?

Clark:

Nevermind.

??

Jason:

What

I’m just speaking on my observations

Bruce:

Is this observation going to make its way to the dinner table on Sunday?

Jason:

Depends on when you decide to let us all know you’re fucking Mr. Truth Justice and the American Way

Bruce:

First of all, no.

Second of all, Alfred’s asking for a headcount.

Jason:

Normal people don’t put their hands on each other’s arms like that

Just an FYI

Also yes I will be there

Private Message Log - May 6th

Jason:

Yo.

Is Bruce fucking with me or does he actually not like Clark

Dick:

FR?????

It took you this long to notice

They’ve got this weird thing IDK

The more I try to figure it out the more confused I get

Jason:

Maybe this is why he’s so angry all the time

Dick:

Like yeah dude

This is old news.

Jason:

My bad I was kind of dead for most of it

Sorry getting blown up has left me out of the loop on Bruce’s situationships!!!!

Dick:

Okay relax.

Jason:

So like…are they ever going to talk to each other about this

Dick:

It’s Bruce and Uncle Clark

The only hope they have is if someone beats them over the head with it

Jason:

So…Diana

Dick:

Yes Diana

The Gotham Gazette

Speculations Arise After Superman Spotted In Gotham

May 30th

By Vicky Vale

In light of recent rumors, speculations about the nature of Batman and Superman’s relationship have come to light. While some consider the pair to be nothing more than close coworkers that collaborate often, others have begun to wonder if there is a more personal connection at play.

According to several eyewitnesses, it is not uncommon to see Superman flying through Gotham, presumably to speak with Batman.

Though there is some comfort in knowing that there’s yet another superhero watching over the people of the city, there also comes concerns that Superman’s increased presence will in turn increase the activity of criminals directly associated with the hero.

Several concerned citizens have begun campaigning to the Mayor to curtail the oversaturation of heroes in Gotham, but whether this is remotely feasible remains to be seen. Additionally, there are those who believe that a more personal nature to the relationship may cause a conflict of interest for the League, which could lead to a burden that the public will ultimately have to bear.

Electronic Copy of Therapy Notes [Released with Patient Consent]

Therapist: Dr. Amelia Stone

Patient: Bruce Wayne (8M)

Date: XX.XX.XXXX

Session 3

Patient is unwilling to leave his home to attend sessions. Patient does not appear aggressive, but rather, numb.

Patient seems to have a difficult time recognizing his parents’ deaths. Patient is displaying several markers for PTSD. Childhood trauma specialist recommended at this time.

Will continue to have sessions three times a week. Schedule may be subject to change.

Date: XX.XX.XXXX

Session 15

Patient is exhibiting signs of reclusiveness. Patient closes himself off bodily, refuses to answer questions, and shuts down any inquiries regarding grief.

Patient appears to be struggling to describe his emotional state, and seems to lack the language necessary to express negative feelings.

Next steps will include techniques on self-soothing and expression.

Date: XX.XX.XXXX

Session 21

Patient decided against speaking at Mr. Chill’s trial. When asked to elaborate on why, patient stated that Mr. Chill was not the only problem.

Patient is demonstrating premature rationalization for someone his age, but this may be due to a lack of interaction with peers.

Patient also demonstrates a remarkable level of perception. Patient seems to pick up on attempts to create introspection or self-reflection. Patient also seems to pick up on specific language/jargon remarkably quickly.

Patient has requested a change in sessions to once a week.

Date: XX.XX.XXXX

Session 50

Patient has admitted that he visits parents’ graves regularly. This may be one self-soothing technique that he is using.

Patient states that he dislikes the idea of his parents being alone, but when asked to clarify, seems to understand that parents are dead.

Date: XX.XX.XXXX

Session 98

Patient is showing signs of isolation. It should again be noted that patient does not have any human contact with others outside of his caretaker. Said caretaker seems to be in the role of an employee rather than a family member. This position may inadvertently be enabling patient.

Further socialization is strongly recommended. Patient does not wish to speak to others his own age.

Date: XX.XX.XXXX

Session 119

Patient stated that he dislikes celebrating his birthday. This is likely due to a heightened reminder of the absence of his parents during family-oriented events. Patient stated that he celebrates Christmas because it makes his butler happy.

Patient likely sees this employee as more than just a caretaker. Patient sees this figure as a surrogate father/grandfather, and treats him as such. It is possible that patient may be putting on the appearance of being well-adjusted or happy to ease the concerns of this caretaker.

Date: XX.XX.XXXX

Session 214

Patient wishes to end the therapist-patient relationship. Patient seems to believe that staying in Gotham is non-conducive to their growth. When asked to explain what this growth means, patient did not wish to answer.

Patient declined to say what he plans on doing after leaving. At this time, patient does not seem to have any plans for harm against himself or others.

Further sessions are recommended. Patient seems to be aware of this. Patient plans to move forward with his plans to depart.

Excerpts from Final Paper for 65-200: Journalistic Ethics

Clark Kent

12/08/XXXX

Prof. Sinclair

Metropolis University

“Rhetoric studies the construction of meaning through language, and exists in every realm of discourse. It may inform the  decisions, perceptions, biases, and value systems of a broad group of readers that in term develop a collective societal conscience. Therefore, as rhetoric relates to journalism, writers must consider the repercussions of rhetoric and language when speaking on any number of matters. The status of a journalist comes with a certain ethos that not only implies a dedication to faithful representation, but also a commitment to documentation.”

“…On the matter of ethical representation of facts, it still remains that journalists must first and foremost consider the intent of storytelling as it relates to real, human people. Writing on personal matters creates personal repercussions for the subject, the reader, and the author, and likewise, writing without a stake in a situation creates distrust and takes advantage of the author-reader relationship.”

“…What is not written does not exist in the world. Words not only represent a commitment to knowledge, but also a reverence to history. As such, there is an ethical obligation of journalists to represent the current happenings of the world in a valuable and accessible manner. This is the ethical obligation of journalists everywhere.”

Dick:

Hi Aunt Di

How are you:))))

Diana:

I’m well. You?

How is Blüdhaven?

Dick:

It’s okay

I’m good too

Also I kinda had a favor to ask…

Diana:

Is something wrong?

[Jason Todd has been added to the conversation.]

Dick:

Hypothetically if you used the lasso of truth on two people would they have to say whether they liked each other or…?

Just a hypothetical though

Jason:

Subtle dude

But yeah like hypothetically

Diana:

Knowing your father, he’d probably find some loophole to avoid the conversation.

I presume this is what this is about.

Dick:

It’s so sad

They’re obviously into each other

Jason:

But they’re also oldheads who don’t like talking about “feelings”

Diana:

I’m fairly certain that has more to do with the fact that they are men rather than the fact that they are old.

But I see your point.

I’ll speak to them about it.

Dick:

Wait no

If Bruce thinks that people have caught on to him he’ll just start sneaking around

Jason:

What a fucking idiot

Diana:

I’ll ask Clark first. He’s always more receptive to, as Jason puts it, “feelings.”

If he ignores me, then we shall circle back to the lasso idea.

Jason:

If you lasso them PLEASE let me be there for it

BRUCE:

Where’d you get this?

CLARK:

When were you going to tell me that you’ve been tracking Lex? Or that he’s been trying to mine kryptonite?

BRUCE:

Barbara told you?

CLARK:

Kara. But I’m sure Barbara told her because you know, they don’t keep secrets from each other!

BRUCE:

Even if I told you, there wasn’t much you could do.

CLARK:

What the hell is that supposed to mean?

BRUCE:

It means that I didn’t see a point in informing you about an operation that you’d have only been a liability to.

CLARK:

You…you don’t know that.

BRUCE:

Don’t I?

Yes! You don’t! You’re assuming the worst and putting yourself at risk for me when I didn’t ask you to.

Don’t use your x-ray vision on me.

CLARK:

It’s dangerous.

BRUCE:

And? I’m not going to apologize for trying to keep you safe.

CLARK:

I don’t want an apology. I just want you to stop putting yourself in danger for me.

BRUCE:

…I can’t do that.

CLARK:

Why not? It’s not your responsibility.

BRUCE:

The same way it’s not yours to listen to my heartbeat whenever you hear there’s trouble in Gotham. You think I don’t know about that?

CLARK:

That’s completely different—

BRUCE:

The hell it is.

CLARK:

I’m not going to die if I stop a bullet from blowing your brains out, am I?

No, but that’s the point! You did die! You…you made it sound like you would always be there, and then you…

LexCorp Involved in Illegal Deep Sea Mining

July 5th

By Clark Kent

LexCorp has been involved in illegal deep sea mining expeditions for radioactive material, according to a ship manifest that was leaked yesterday ago. The manifest reveals that the multinational conglomerate has been outsourcing said expeditions to several different sources, five of which have been linked to confirmed black market shipping companies.

The material that LexCorp had been mining for is unconfirmed at this time, but Metropolis public safety officials have released a statement regarding the matter. They state that, “any and all resource collection that may inflict harm on the general public must be conducted transparently and with the appropriate regulations, neither of which was seen in the LexCorp case. As it relates to the general wellbeing of Metropolis citizens, a complete audit of all LexCorp material collection is necessary to ensure that there is no risk of a health crisis.”

In light of this concerning revelation, LexCorp has faced multiple criticisms from other corporations, including Wayne Enterprises, and has officially been charged with thirteen counts of smuggling by the State District Attorney. LexCorp CEO, Lex Luthor, has declined to comment at this time.

The audit of LexCorp initiatives is expected to begin on July 10th, with Public Health Director Samira Abid leading the process.

Letters Written by Bruce Wayne

Date: XX.XX.XXXX

Mother,

I’m leaving Gotham tomorrow. I know that probably isn’t what you want to hear, but I don’t think I can stay. Alfred will take care of the Manor for however long I’m away. Lucius will take care of business affairs.

I know it’s been years, but I miss you. Every morning, I pretend like I am just waking up from a bad dream, and you’ll be downstairs when I go to eat breakfast. I hate that even after all this time, I still get disappointed when I realize it’s just me and Alfred.

Please don’t be upset. I’ll come back. I’ll change things, the way you and Father imagined.

Your son,

Bruce

Date: XX.XX.XXXX

Father,

I remember being on the stairwell when you saved Carmine Falcone’s life. I had never seen it before, you at work. I thought you were magic.

I know now that I was just a stupid child. I realize that you were bound by oath, that you couldn’t just play God and let the man die. But sometimes I find myself wondering. If you had, how many people would have lived? How many people would still be here, going home to their wives and sons? You have no idea how many times I ask myself the same question, nowadays.

You and Mother would have never imagined it, but things are different now. There are aliens with the strength of gods. Princesses from myth. I know you had dreams of me following in your footsteps, becoming a doctor and saving lives. I’m sorry to say that the reality couldn’t be further from that.

The world is much larger and stranger than either of us ever could have believed. It feels childish to write this letter, knowing there is nothing I could do to send it to you.

But if a farmboy from Kansas could break the sound barrier in a single leap to save me from a stray bullet all the way in Gotham, then wouldn’t one last conversation with you be possible?

The odd and uncanny give me baseless hope. There’s things that I know could never change, but I find myself praying for it nonetheless.

Your son,

Bruce

Date: XX.XX.XXXX

Mother,

I’m certainly your son, if your relationship with Father is any point of reference.

I used to think it was silly, how you claimed you fell in love with him as soon as you met him. I’m eating my words, it seems.

I think I’d rather die than ever say this out loud. I probably will die before I admit what I’m writing to you. If we ever meet again, please pretend like this letter was never written.

He’s a reporter. Well, he’s also the last surviving member of a superpowered alien race, but those are extraneous details. He’s from Kansas and wears the ugliest suits. You’d probably keel over if you saw the way he dresses at these socialite functions he’s covering.

He’s all alone. No one on this earth understands that pain, or the powers that he has. He’s practically a god, and he still insists on holding the door open for everyone and helping little girls rescue their cats out of tall trees. I sometimes wonder if he’s stupid, or just that sincere.

With the power that he has, he could rule us all. He could force us to bend the knee to him, but he’s kind instead. There’s people who insist that he’s a danger to us, that one day he will wake up and realize he doesn’t have to obey the rules of society like the rest of us. They’re all a bunch of idiots.

I don’t know if I’ll ever get over this feeling. It’s like seeing the sun for the first time.

Your very pathetic and embarrassed son,

Bruce.

Date: XX.XX.XXXX

Clark,

I hate you. I hate you more than anything.

If you come back, I’ll never complain about you scanning me for injuries ever again. I’ll let you fly into Gotham whenever you want. I’ll stop fucking around and give you actual interviews from time to time.

Just come back to me.

Bruce

Notes:

Thomas Wayne saving Carmine Falcone appears in both The Batman (2022) and Batman: The Long Halloween #9

The whole image that Bruce has of Clark is mostly inspired by Batman (2016-) #36, which is one of the best issues in an arc that was, IMO, kind of terrible (just let Bat marry Cat what is this nonsense about 'he'll give up the mantle if he's happy")

Letter Written by Martha Kent

Date: XX.XX.XXXX

Dear Bruce,

I can’t pretend to understand what it is you boys do under the masks and capes, but if you’re anything like Clark described, you’re a good man.

I know that sometimes, it seems like losing those close to you is a punishment for all the bad things you’ve done in life. More than that, you feel like it’s a sign that you weren’t good enough to protect them, or that it’s your fault that they’ve died.

There’s no promise that we’ll ever understand the world you and Clark used to live in, but there will always be a hot meal and a cup of coffee here if you ever want it. It’s the least we could do for you.

Clark didn’t have many friends, even less so friends that he would bring to the farm. He might have been Superman to everyone else, but he was still the little boy who would cry whenever I went into town without him. The little boy in Clark that never really grew old, he thought that Bruce Wayne could walk on water. Not Batman, you.

I’m pretty sure you were his hero. And I know my son. He’d never, ever blame you for not being able to save him, so don’t go doing what Clark wouldn’t. Surround yourself with the people who make the pain easier. Nobody can make it go away for you, but there are some who can make it bearable.

I’m sorry if this is only adding more hurt. I couldn’t stand the thought of you trying to solve all the world’s problems alone, trying to pick up the pieces that Clark’s left behind. Someone ought to tell you to rest, too.

Thank you for paying for the funeral. Don’t think I didn’t notice that.

Love,

Martha.

Superman v. Doomsday is from Superman (1986-) #75, none of this kryptonite spear nonsense, just pure beatdown

Audio Transcripts from Watchtower Surveillance Cameras - July 7th

CLARK:

Talk? Who says that and drops off the face of the earth for two days?

DIANA:

I understand that question is rhetorical, Clark, but the answer actually would be B—

CLARK:

Shoot, sorry. I didn’t think the dummy would go that far.

DIANA:

No, I enjoyed it. Toss me another one.

CLARK:

It’s just—up high—I don’t know when it happened, but Bruce just started treating me differently all of a sudden.

DIANA:

Does he? In what way?

CLARK:

He’s keeping secrets from me. Not just the kryptonite thing, it’s other stuff on top of it. It’s like he doesn’t want me knowing what’s going on inside his head.

DIANA:

Throw two this time. Is he cold to you?

CLARK:

No. That’s the weird thing. He just…stops.

DIANA:

Stops? Again.

CLARK:

Every time I think I’m getting close to understanding him, he shoves me away and hides out until he thinks I’ve dropped it. Like now. Honestly, I have no idea why he even said he wanted to talk if he was just going to ghost me.

DIANA:

Why don’t you just ask him that, then?

CLARK:

He’s an adult! I shouldn’t have to ask him to explain to me why his feelings are hurt!

DIANA:

By that logic, shouldn’t you, as another adult, be telling him that his inaction is frustrating?

CLARK:

It’s not frustrating, it’s…

DIANA:

It’s?

CLARK:

I just don’t know why it’s only me he does this to. We didn’t used to be like this.

DIANA:

Bruce goes about his emotions in roundabout ways. We both know this.

CLARK:

Right, but why me, specifically? What?

DIANA:

…Nothing. You two just astonish me.

CLARK:

Hey, at least I’m talking it out with you.

DIANA:

Yes, with me, not the actual subject of this conversation. And the most ludicrous part is that we haven’t mentioned the subject of your lingering feelings for the man, so this isn’t even the worst of it.

CLARK:

Are you…grumbling? Since when does the Princess of Paradise grumble?

DIANA:

Since she made friends with a pair of idiots like you two.

CLARK:

Well, I can't disagree, but I'm not…this isn't about my feelings for him right now. I can't drop that on him, not when this is still going on. He wouldn't want that.

DIANA:

Clark. Do you want to know what your issue is?

CLARK:

Please.

DIANA:

Maybe Bruce doesn't actually want you to jump in front of him every time a gun goes off. And maybe you don't like the fact that he keeps about a million secrets from you in the name of protecting you. Instead of constantly assuming that you know what the other person needs, you two should just tell each other what you really want for once!

CLARK:

Could you maybe put the lasso away while you’re saying this?

DIANA:

You are about ten years too late to be asking that.

CLARK:

Alright, fine. So, what, I approach him first? Won’t he just feel cornered?

DIANA:

Bruce would rather die unhappy than risk exposing himself to someone that he cares about. But if he’s to get over that ridiculous notion of his, you need to show him first that you’re not going anywhere.

CLARK:

I’m not. Going anywhere.

DIANA:

Does he believe that?

CLARK:

Why wouldn’t—Oh, Christ. He’s still not over Doomsday, is he?

DIANA:

I'm not the one you should be asking that.

Private Message Log - July 7th

Tim:

How much longer are you going to keep me access locked

I have cold cases to solve

Bruce:

Probably until you learn to respect other people’s privacy.

And until I figure out how you even hacked into my private message line to begin with.

Tim:

Okay maybe I went about it the wrong way but you cannot seriously tell me that ghosting Supes and making a million different combat plans to destroy all of his enemies is a better alternative than just being honest about your feelings

Also good luck with that lol

Bruce:

That’s League business. It doesn’t concern you.

Tim:

Secretly being in love with your best friend for over ten years isn’t league business im not stupid

Bruce:

I realize that more and more every day, Tim.

I'm still not giving you back your access.

the Gotham sewer entrance is from Superman/Batman (2003-) #1-6, the Public Enemies storyline

do not squint that closely at the timeline i realize it makes no sense for a early post-Doomsday arc to include Jason as Red Hood since he didn't return until 2005 and a post Red Robin tim drake since that wasn't until 2009 but guess what i do not care canon means nothing if they can keep tim forever 17 i can do whatever i want

CLARK:

You said we should talk.

BRUCE:

I guess I did.

CLARK:

What?

BRUCE:

Nothing.

CLARK:

I…I’ll be honest, I flew here without much of a plan.

BRUCE:

Yeah? I’ll have Alfred bring us tea.

CLARK:

No, just—just stay. Stay right here.

BRUCE:

I don’t think—

CLARK:

Please just stay. Give me a chance to explain. After that, I won't stop you from doing what you want.

BRUCE:

…Mm.

CLARK:

That fight we had…I wasn’t upset that you stopped Lex. I just couldn’t stand the thought of you putting your life at risk for me. And I get your argument about kryptonite making me vulnerable, that’s not the issue. I feel like you’re running a million different plans behind my back, and I can’t help you with a single one of them. You keep getting hurt trying to help people, and I find out after the fact. I can’t tell if it’s because you don’t trust me, or because…well, I don’t know.

BRUCE:

So you…you what?

CLARK:

I want us to be honest with each other.

BRUCE:

To what end?

CLARK:

What do you mean, to what end?  Isn’t—Isn’t that why you wanted us to talk? To figure this out?

BRUCE:

I didn’t send that message. I was hacked.

CLARK:

Yeah, right. As if I’d believe that you of all people would—you’re serious?

BRUCE:

Unfortunately.

CLARK:

So you didn’t—if someone hadn’t meddled, you weren’t going to say anything?

BRUCE:

I…no.

CLARK:

Unbelievable. I can’t believe I actually thought you were—

BRUCE:

We don’t have to do this.

CLARK:

Real nice of you to mention that after I laid out all my cards.

BRUCE:

Well you weren’t exactly giving me any time to explain.

CLARK:

So now you suddenly start respecting what I want? Unbelievable, B.

BRUCE:

I don’t know what you expected, Clark.

CLARK:

Honesty! Or at the very least, for you to admit that you’re hovering because of what happened with Doomsday!

BRUCE:

Drop it.

CLARK:

No! I—what happened to us, B? We used to never fight. Why did me dying ruin whatever this was?

BRUCE:

I think you’re overestimating things. We were never—

CLARK:

Don’t fucking finish that sentence.

BRUCE:

We—

TIM:

Bruce! Break-in at STAR Labs. Scarecrow’s taken several researchers hostage in the weaponry division. I’m getting the others out, but I don’t have enough antidote to go around.

BRUCE:

Fuck, now?

CLARK:

I’ll go with you. The gas won’t be a problem for me.

BRUCE:

Earpiece. Take one.

CLARK:

You’re taking the plane?

BRUCE:

Car.

CLARK:

Tell me what your plan is.

BRUCE:

Get the hostages. I’ll go after Crane.

CLARK:

Fine.

The Gotham Gazette

[LIVE] Scarecrow Takes Multiple Hostages at STAR Labs

July 8th

By Vicky Vale

[03:57:11] “This just in, a known supervillain, Scarecrow, has broken into STAR Labs and taken multiple hostages. Scarecrow was last seen in Blackgate Penitentiary, where it was speculated that he would be moved to Arkham after reportedly failing multiple psych evaluations. Scarecrow, also known as Jonathan Crane, is a well-known bioterrorist who specializes in fear toxin, an aerosol hallucinogenic that induces visions of hysteria and terror. Authorities are enacting an evacuation order for all Gotham residents within a mile radius of the lab at this time. If you are unsure of your evacuation route, please visit the Gotham City Crisis and Natural Disaster Agency Website for more information. We’ll be back with more updates.”

[04:01:45] “The Gazette is receiving a livestream from an unknown source who appears to be trapped inside the facility, which is on the screen now. As of now, the masked vigilante Robin has been spotted making efforts to evacuate all other personnel not affected by the gas. Patrol officers are providing evacuation routes through flares and emergency lights, while Hazardous Materials is now on scene to contain the possible hallucinogen leak. Gotham PD requests that all evacuees follow their designated paths and to leave all personal belongings behind.”

[04:02:00] “A car has crashed into the Southeast evacuation path! The driver appears unharmed at this time, but authorities are now requesting that any residents from 22nd Street to 26th now use the Southwest exit path.”

[04:03:27] “ We’ve spotted Batman’s vehicle on scene. No clear visual of the vigilante yet.”

[04:04:19]] “This just in, Superman has also been spotted on scene. The Gazette is unable to get a statement on the matter at this time, but it appears that the police were also unaware of his presence.”

[04:10:19] “Batman has been located on the rooftop with Crane! Gotham PD has issued a no-fly order within 500 yards of the area, including drones and all news helicopters. Mass casualty protocols have now begun, and victims are being triaged by first responders on scene. Treatment centers with fear toxin antidotes are being set up on Eleventh Avenue at every even-numbered street. If you are experiencing any symptoms, please seek treatment immediately.”

[04:11:28] “A cloud of fear toxin has been released into the air! All news reporters, including myself, are being forced to evacuate! Still no visuals on either superhero.”

[04:15:03] “Superman has just absorbed all the toxins in the air. As far as experts can tell, the area is no longer contaminated. Superman does not appear to be affected by this particular strain of fear toxin!”

[04:15:45] “That’s a negative. Superman is down, I repeat, Superman is down!”

0406: Don’t! I’m on him!

0407: Agent A, pull up the floor plan. What sort of experiments were they running on floor twenty-eight?

0407: You’re positive? Relay that to him.

0408: Fuck. I’ve got a man down. I had to give him my antidote dose.

0409: Don’t. I’ll have A bring more. Just focus on your job and find Robin.

BRUCE:

Tim, don’t.

CLARK:

Tell me where he is!

Don’t hurt him!

Mission Report: Scarecrow at STAR

Documenter: Batman

On 07/08 at 0357, Jonathan Crane [codename Scarecrow] broke into the Gotham City division of STAR Labs and took seven researchers hostage on the twenty-eighth floor of the building. At the time of the break-in, Robin located sixty-three other employees to the fifth floor, then called in the situation to the Batcave, upon which Batman and Superman proceeded to the scene via car and flight, respectively. Robin then evacuated the employees through the steam tunnels connected to the basement level, per Batman’s directive.

On arrival, GCPD were already in the process of evacuating nearby residents. Refer to Batcomputer’s copy of Incident Report 25070831 for police details on staging and resource management. Superman and Batman then entered the twenty-eight floor concurrently through the north side windows and elevator entrance. Batman forced Crane up towards the rooftop, which left Superman clear to evacuate the hostages to the nearest treatment center on 32nd and 9th.

During the pursuit, Batman found one victim, 36M, who had been exposed to fear toxin in Stairwell B between the thirty-seventh and thirty-eighth floor. Batman injected the victim with his personal dose of fear toxin antidote, and informed base [Agent A] of his status, requesting plane extraction. It was also confirmed at this time that floor twenty-eight specialized in experiments with extraterrestrial materials, one of which happened to be kryptonite. Superman was informed of this, and also warned to stay away. No confirmation was available at the time as to whether Crane had taken the kryptonite or not.

Later, it was confirmed that Crane had indeed taken the kryptonite dust held on floor twenty-eight. It is believed that Crane took the kryptonite in a split decision as a result of Superman’s presence becoming known, and that this was not a predetermined attack against him. The documenter believes that Crane suspended the kryptonite dust in his fear toxin between 0408 and 0411 while Batman was administering the antidote to the victim found in the stairwell.

Upon securing the victim and ensuring that the antidote had been administered, Batman went to the rooftop from the fortieth floor exit and attempted to restrain Crane. During the fight, he was unable to prevent a failsafe canister from releasing, which released a modified form of fear toxin into the air. At this time, Crane shot Batman twice with 0.380 mm rounds, the first of which was absorbed by the suit’s armor plating. However, the second round struck the first, which shattered the plating and embedded three bullet fragments into Batman’s abdomen.

Superman, aware that Batman no longer had an antidote on hand, declared his intent to extract him. Batman opposed these orders and gave explicit instructions for Superman to stay clear of the scene on account of possible kryptonite exposure.

Superman blatantly disregarded Batman’s communications and extracted him, exposing himself to fear toxin in the process. He flew Batman to the Cave, upon which he started exhibiting symptoms of fear toxin exposure. He presented with tachypnea, dilated pupils, diaphoresis, and tachycardia. Furthermore, he appeared to be hallucinating an unknown figure who threatened Batman.

Superman then, under the influence of fear toxin, grabbed Batman by the throat, believing him to be the unknown figure. At this time, Robin returned to the Cave, and demanded that Superman release Batman. It was his belief that Superman did not have the mental faculties to act rationally, and that he posed a danger to himself and others. Robin shot Superman in the chest with a kryptonite bullet, subduing him, then immediately administered the fear toxin antidote into the wound site before it could close up.

The documenter of this report believes that many things went wrong during this incident. Upon reflection, it is clear that Superman is unable to prioritize his safety when certain individuals are involved. He acts without reason, puts himself in harm’s way, and does not acknowledge that he is also threatened with the possibility of injury or even death.

The documenter believes his presence is doing more harm than good for Superman. In effect, the man does not value his own wellbeing over the documenter’s, and if such is the case, it falls on said documenter to distance himself before something serious happens again.

Notes:

wow this chapter did NOT want to get written

also don't pay too much attention to the timing of things I too have no rational explanation for why Batman was able to scale up to the 28th floor in 1 minute except for "he's Batman" so
