Work Text:

Pretty soon now, I hope I find my voice

Not that I have much, much of a choice

'Cause I've been searching high, I've been searching low

To try to find it, I guess it's still small

"Gem?"

Her sister's voice broke through her slumber, Gem slowly blinking her emerald eyes awake to turn over and face where Pearl stands by her slightly open door, a thermos of coffee in one hand and a pile of books in the other. Wearing a clean white button up and smart chocolate brown skirt to her knees, Pearl's style was prim and proper which was an opposite to her wild-child sister whose room was covered in band t-shirts and piles of well-loved books everywhere.

"It's half past ten and I am due for class but wanted to check in with you before I leave." She allows herself in after Gem waves her forth, placing down her coffee and books on a nearby surface before sitting on the side of her younger sister's bed. "Any plans for the day?"

Gem shrugged, still wiping the sleep from her gaze and combing her wild auburn curls with dainty fingers as she adjusts to the waking world, already missing the peaceful emptiness of sleep. There she didn't feel like a disappointment and a failure, a worryingly normal occurrence between brief bursts of happiness before she always returned to sorrow.

"If you feel up for it I heard there's a used bookstore a few streets over, maybe you could go find something new that you want to read?" Pearl knew her sister well, tempting her with one of her favourite things to leave their small two bedroom apartment at least for a few hours.

"Maybe…" Gem replies quietly, fidgeting with the ends of her hair as she thinks.

Pearl reaches over and captures her hand, pulling her in for a swift hug before she stands up and moves to pick up her things off Gem's dresser. "I know things have been rough lately but it might do you some good to leave this space for a bit, let your mind reset."

Gem can only nod, knowing her older sister is right and wonders if today is finally the day she follows through on that advice. Ever since they moved here a few months ago the redhead has struggled to explore their new start, still processing why they left their old life it had been a hard adjustment period. But she couldn't deny that she was getting antsy, and if there was a bookstore nearby that was the perfect excuse to go searching for her new favourite story.

"I'll send you the address later, Cleo told me about the store a little while ago and I forgot to mention it until now." Shuffling her textbooks back into her arms, she takes a sip of coffee before giving one last look to Gem. "I left your tea on the stove, please take care of yourself and I will be back later on after dinner, I'm going out with a few friends then I will be home. I'll text you if anything changes, keep me updated if you do go to the book store. I'm running late already, love you!"

Disappearing out the door, Gem lets herself fall back to her pillows with a massive sigh, tension still stiffening her shoulders and neck she winces at the twinge of pain before staring up at her ceiling and the sea creatures mixed with glittering silver star decorations taped there. Logically, she knew Pearl was correct. This apartment was starting to feel like a prison instead of the fresh beginning both were striving to achieve but it was also so safe compared to where they had come from. Everything here was where the pair of sisters had placed it, allowing themselves silly little knickknacks among the music posters and wall scrolls filled with depictions of the ocean both of them adored.

Their life had been full of impossible pressures for achievements that felt determined for them from birth, and they had both broken away to relieve that tension and find their own lives here instead the moment Gem became legally an adult. For years, it had been only her and Pearl against the world. They had always been close as siblings, a mere three years apart meant they grew up thick as thieves, and often times they had to take care of each other because they had no one else who put time into balancing their emotional well being.

Giving another sigh, Gem sits back up and tosses her ocean-themed blankets to the side allowing her to crawl out of the warmth of her bed. Shivering, she pulls on a forest green housecoat and makes her way to the kitchen where a steaming mug of tea awaited her, picking a bagel out of the breadbox she lets the toaster heat a little bit before making her breakfast.

As its cooking she leans against the counter sipping at her tea made perfectly within her favourite mug and stares at the photos covering their fridge capturing all the happy memories they have made in their lives together. Pearl had always gone above and beyond protecting her sister's joy and was so incredibly strong with the punches life attempted to throw at them, shielding Gem as much as she could until they could escape their parent's clutches.

Locating the garlic and herb cream cheese, she spreads it across her sesame seed bagel and makes her way out to their small living room to check on the various plants scattered everywhere to see which need water and to evaluate their overall health. Both sisters loved nature and filling their space with life only felt right, and between the several species of house plants held in a wide range of clay pots glimpses of their other interests showed through. Worn novels with cracked spines were shoved between sketchbooks which were barely held together bound with ribbons, elastics, tape, whatever could hold them together, placed upon crooked wooden shelves with warped planks. Soft blankets were tossed across their plush floral navy blue couch they had got from a good deal made with a thrift store nearby, a slightly off-level coffee table took up the middle of the space piled high with university work, a laptop and various gaming devices with their controllers nearby.

Drawing away the crimson curtains she sighs seeing the dust coating various electronic screens highlighted by the sun like their television perched on a second-hand entertainment stand and Pearl's laptop left open and running on the coffee table, obviously she realized she was late mid-assignment and rushed off. Gem briefly considers staying in today to catch up with some of their cleaning duties but the warm sunshine outside was calling her, she knew Pearl wouldn't be upset instead she'd be proud if Gem left these tasks for later.

Finishing her tea and bagel, she quickly washes her dishes before returning to her bedroom and deciding what to wear, whenever she catches herself starting to be anxious she does the breathing exercises Pearl taught her to bring herself back to the present. Sitting down at her small vanity she applies makeup while looking at the various photographs taped to the edges of the mirror thinking about who she left behind.

She should really send a text to Grian, she decided, pulling out her phone to fire off a quick message checking in before finishing her eyeliner and placing small silver hoops through her ear lobes. Looking in the mirror its hard to recognize herself, a feeling she was terribly familiar with and even when she did it was accompanied with her own thoughts reminding her how she failed expectations and wasn't living the life their parents wanted her too. Getting up quickly before they could consume her, she throws on ripped jeans and one of her favourite baggy t-shirts advertising a band from their hometown that included good friends of theirs. Another group of people she should call she thinks staring down at the picture that had been ironed to the front of the black fabric, she writes down a reminder before locating her small backpack purse and leaving back out to the living room where their front door was located.

To all the people I know that listen

Listen to me, Hallelujah

To all the people I know that prayed for me

For my safety, Hallelujah

Taking a moment to stare at the wooden door, she hypes herself up to leave and follow the map she had set up after Pearl forwarded the book store information. It was only about a ten minute walk, roughly around three blocks away it wouldn't take too long to arrive, maybe three songs worth of time she plans while turning on her headphones to slip over her head after attempting and failing to calm her wild hair.

After one more grounding breath she places her hand on the door handle and opens it, stepping through then triple checking its locked after its closed before she starts to walk down the dated carpeted hallway of their apartment building. Books, this was for new stories, she kept reminding herself as she presses the button to call the elevator at the end of the hall.

Glancing down at her phone she adds a few songs to queue before responding to Grian's earlier reply, mentioning how she is fine and she misses the group they had back in their hometown. Both sisters kept in touch with a few souls from their past but most had been cut off, needing that separation from those who nearly drove them insane with the expectations they held them up too.

Gem missed her old friends desperately but knew the decision her and Pearl made to move was for the best in the long run, it gave them time to find themselves and learn how to be their best. She wrestled with the envy she felt with how easily Pearl was able to adjust; making friends and throwing herself into the art course she had been accepted into between shifts at her part time job. She assured Gem that she could support them as long as Gem needed to work on herself but the guilt still weighed her stomach down to the ground, having gone searching through job ads when she had the energy to but her inquiries either went unanswered or were denied.

The fresh air surrounds the redhead as she exits their apartment building, walking off to the right in the direction her map indicated to this bookstore Cleo had recommended. She admired how beautifully the streets of this city were landscaped, the population just large enough to call itself a city but still held a lot of the small town charm both sisters adored. As she passed each storefront she admired the quaint little cafes, a thrift store that the pair of sisters visited frequently, various other small businesses with welcoming aesthetics alongside restaurants or cafes which left the delicious aroma of food in the air mixing with the fragrant bloom of the flowers and trees which lined the street.

Gem adored reading, she had all her life and used the novels she read as an escape from whatever hell life was putting her through at that exact moment. Her collection took up most of their space in the van they moved with, yet Pearl didn't complain for a single moment as her art supplies took up nearly as much and they simply felt free while adjusting the box locations like they were playing Tetris. There was nothing quite like finding that new novel that would consume your every thought until it ultimately warped your personality and changed who you were, a new perspective to reflect on whenever she needed to return home to those volumes of paper that were practically her childhood friends.

Moving her purse strap to a more comfortable location on her shoulder, she checks her map opened up on her cell phone yet again before spotting the sign she had been searching for. A crow wearing a golden crown perched atop a pile of books holding a writing quill within its beak sat beside the words 'Crows & Chapters' written in looping script painted night black. The front windows were beautifully styled with books lined up in their series among houseplants and small statues, Gem recognizing a few of the figures as popular races from a widely-known role-playing game called Dungeons and Dragons. A desperate want rises in Gem's chest having always been interested in playing but had yet to find a group to play with, pushing open the door to the merry chime of a bell.

The inside of the storefront was inviting from the get go, large bookshelves lined the walls and many different types of couches and armchairs were scattered between, some nearby forming little conversation circles which a few were filled with customers relaxing with drinks they had bought from the coffee bar Gem didn't know this store had.

Letting the door close behind her Gem ponders where to begin, still feeling anxious with all the people she moves to the closest shelf where someone stood unpacking books from a box at his feet. Picking up a book with a pirate on the cover, she admires the art of the beautiful woman covered in scars before she flips it over to read the summary. Sounding intriguing, she looks at the price and ponders how much she wants this specific book before tucking it into the crook of her arm to continue searching for anything else that might call out to her while she considers the choice.

"That's a good one." The worker standing beside her straightens up with an approving nod, pushing his waist-length braid of cherry-blossom hair behind him with a small smile. Adjusting his forest-green apron, he begins to break down the cardboard box as he continues to speak. "It kept me on the edge of my seat the entire last half of the book, I've read a few other things by that author and have been impressed each time, would recommend."

"I appreciate the insight, Techno." Gem responds after glancing at his name tag, peering back down at the book cover before meeting his mahogany eyes once more. "Any more recommendations?"

"What sort of stories do you enjoy? Well, besides pirates which I share a love for, their tales of adventures and wild freedom are a wonderful step away from reality."

"I mean you nailed it there, I love anything that lets me escape so fantasy is also high on my list, alongside classic re-tellings of myths or legends." Tucking the book back in place as Techno thinks for a moment, before he leads her over to the other side of the store to another bookshelf with a sign hanging above indicating it was their fantasy section.

Searching for something in particular, he finds it and drops it into Gem's waiting hands. "The world building of this one is immersive and impressive, it captured me for a good long while and I kept a copy of it for my own collection to re-read at some point. Also with the deals we run for students we offer discounts depending on how many books you buy, so keep that in mind."

"Oh I am not a student, my older sister is though!" She finds herself captured by the entrancing eyes of the fae on the cover, her dark gaze speaking of dangerous secrets and a deadly willingness to keep them hidden.

"Close enough." Techno shrugs, Gem watching with one raised eyebrow. "Phil will agree, he's the one who is running the counter. He will do anything to keep the art of reading alive and loves seeing young'uns in here, don't be surprised when he applies the discount anyways, or if he even charges you at all. He's gonna run us out of business if he's not careful with how often he basically gives books away for free."

Initially Gem thought Techno was annoyed with the middle-aged blonde man she saw operating the cash register until she caught the fond expression the pink-haired man wore, something that changed in an instant when the front door slams open followed by a loud argument which Techno tosses Gem a pleading glance. "Oh god, I apologize in advance."

Three new faces arrived with two of them shouting at each other, a tall and lean sunshine blonde was swearing profusely at the shorter brunette teen beside him, their third looking vaguely annoyed beneath their rose-red beanie who was also the shortest out of the whole group. Throwing their hands up in the air they leave to join Phil behind the counter, shrugging on an apron while they exchanged a few quick words with the blonde man who was glaring down the teens in between their discussion.

Techno lets out a sigh at Gem's side, walking around her to approach the two still swearing at one another over something Gem was clearly missing the context on. She tried not to wince at the volume but it was hard to avoid it stepping closer to the shelf pretending to inspect the spines of the fantasy novels in front of her, trying her best to tune out the yelling match that brought back terrible memories.

"Tommy! Tubbo! Knock it off!" Techno cuts in with a firm tone, both teens immediately stopping their own banter to whirl towards the taller pink-haired man. "We have customers, show some respect, please."

"He started it." The taller blonde glares down at the other teen, sticking out his tongue quickly before returning his gaze to Techno.

"Did not!"

"Well I am finishing it. Lay off one another and go cool down." Techno orders them, both boys scowling as they make their way behind the counter as well and disappeared through a door labelled 'break room'. Turning to Gem he offers an apologetic smile, his shoulders falling slightly. "Sorry about them, I swear they are best friends but this is unfortunately a common occurrence."

"It's okay, sometimes friends are just like that." Gem says weakly, trying to hide how her hands are trembling from the confrontation nearly dropping the book she held. Techno wore an understanding expression as he beckons her over to the coffee bar the third brunette from earlier was now attending to with a beautiful older woman cleaning out a machine nearby, a bright menu hung above written in chalk with lovely flowers drawn throughout the list.

"Can our friend here get something to drink? On me?" He asks, Gem about to protest until she saw the certainty in the set of his jaw.

"Of course! What are you in the mood for?"

"Can I please have a hot chocolate, Aimsey?" Double checking their name tag, they nod quickly ringing it in as her companion starts to heat up some milk nearby.

"Kristin is already on it." The brunette winked one of their mocha eyes, their expression hardening glancing at the break room door. "Just let me know if you need me to go wring their necks, Tommy and Tubbo can be too loud for their own good. In fact, we are lucky its only them two, if Sneeg and Purpled were involved your ear drums would be ringing."

"It's okay, don't worry about it. But I appreciate the offered murder attempts." Gem replies with a smirk, Aimsey putting both their thumbs up.

"Anytime. I'd like to say they aren't like that constantly but that would be a lie, I mostly tune them out at this point or barely notice it at all. They have been best friends for many, many years and come through for the other when needed, both of them are simply too stubborn to see the other's perspective is usually the cause. Or their love language is banter, who knows?"

"It's a mix of both." Kristin joins them at the counter, holding out a hand to Gem. "Pleased to see a new face in here, did you just move to town? I know my regulars and I haven't seen your face before, though I can only hope you will return despite your first experience. "

"I am, my name is Gem. Been here for a little while but needed some time to settle in before I felt the need to explore. My older sister Pearl attends the local university and one of her friends recommended I come check this place out. I must say, it's very lovely and welcoming in here. Are you one of the owners?"

"Indeed, I own Crows & Chapters alongside my husband Phil and our long-time friend Techno, who you have already met." Gem shakes Kristin's hand before she turns to finish making the hot chocolate now that the milk is ready to be prepared. Gem only now notices that Techno left her to go exchange a few words with Phil who is making some notes into a ledger open in front of him.

"You picked a good time to come in with how quiet it is, usually the late afternoons and evenings are packed with students studying or meeting up to go over notes together. Phil, Kristin and Techno make a lot of efforts to make this store feel like a home away from home, somewhere all the misfits and outcasts are welcome and it shows with the large amount of business as the sun goes down." Aimsey comments, organizing a few receipts before pointing to Gem's shirt.

"I love your tee though I am not sure I have ever heard of the Hermits, its a wicked design!" Aimsey compliments, Gem smoothing her shirt in a nervous gesture before her face grows warm with fond memories. Four people posed on the front each with a different colour theme; red, blue, yellow and purple painted all aspects of their outfits jamming out on their respective instruments while in the middle of a set.

"They are a group from my hometown, a ragtag mix of teens turning young adults intent on making it big in the world and they are good friends of Pearl and I. Though they are closer in age to Pearl, we always hung out as a group alongside a few others, they were the people who raised me." Gem tries very hard to keep the longing tone from her voice, swallowing a heavy lump of emotions before she tries to put up a strong front once more. "We plan to travel home for their next show but for now its phone calls and text conversations to keep up with them. Last I heard they were working on a new song that depending on its success might be played on the radio, which is exciting!"

"Do they have their discography on any music services? I am always looking for new bands to follow." Aimsey locates their phone and pulls open a music app, searching the name Gem spoke before they gave an 'aha' and adding it to a playlist marked 'listen to later'. "I'm excited, I know what I am listening to walking home tonight!"

"Here you go!" Kristin returns with a wonderful smelling hot chocolate in a handmade mug, the top artfully covered in sprinkles and whipped cream. Gem can't help her smile seeing the delightful creation, shifting the books she was holding to her other arm to carefully grab what was being offered to her. "Go find a seat, we encourage you to stick around while you make a decision on what novel will be your new read. I am positive Techno is already having a word with my two rowdy teens but feel free to just hang out to music, whatever you need to do to decompress!"

"Thank you Kristin and Aimsey, I will." Gem is surprised how eager she is to hang out in Crows & Chapters for a little while more, knowing she still had a few hours until Pearl was home it seemed like the perfect space to spend some time in.

Locating a plush violet wingback chair with beautifully engraved wooden feet stained a dark walnut shade, she settles in after placing her mug carefully beside her. Putting down the second book, she picks back up the adventures on the high sea story that attracted her first. Re-reading the summary, she admires the pretty woman on the front for a few moments setting back up her music before she opens the novel up, revealing in the way the spine creaked open showing how well-loved this piece of literature was by its previous owner. She could understand the appeal of new books but something about second-hand ones in particular called out to her more, knowing how it felt to be used by the world, for better or worse.

Noon hour comes and goes, the sun passing its midway point and sinking towards the horizon as Gem enjoys her reading between Kristin refilling her drink while waving off payment. Aimsey comes to spend their break chatting with the redhead after they make sure its okay they do so, spending several minutes talking about anything and everything before the short brunette has to return to the coffee bar.

When she reaches a quarter of the way into the book she suddenly realizes how much time has passed glancing at her phone, quickly downing the rest of her hot chocolate and bringing the mug back over to the coffee counter. Giving her thanks once more to Kristin she exchanges cell numbers with Aimsey per her own request, for the first time since moving here Gem wanted to hang outwith a friend in person and Aimsey seemed perfect for the bill with how quickly they got along. Easy laughter aplenty happened during their earlier talk, sharing a lot of similar interests plans were quickly discussed for some time in the future to play video games and listen to music together.

True to Techno's earlier guess, when Gem brought the pirate novel up to the counter Phil gave it to her for free, claiming all first time customers get their first purchase waived while his pink-haired friend rolled his eyes with an affectionate sigh which earned him an elbow in the ribs. Gem left Crows & Chapters with a wide smile across her face and her heart significantly lighter, already planning to return the moment she finished her new purchase to see what else she could find and to maybe return for the fae book Techno had recommended.

Can you hear me now? Can you hear me now?

I'm singing out as loud as I know how, but am I loud enough?

I got my voice and you got yours

So let's make a little noise all together now

The second time she returns to the book store Gem has competed reading the pirate novel she had been recommended and was eager for more, her heart excited for more adventures to lose herself in. Pearl had been so happy when she came home with that first book and demanded next time she had free time they would go together. It just so happened today she had class, but they made the promise for soon.

Just like the first time, Gem admires the outside of the cozy store that was quickly becoming her new favourite used book store, noticing how the display windows had been changed and refreshed with a new arrangement. It was roughly around noon and raining today, meaning she only took a moment to admire the outside before she quickly went in.

There were fewer customers in here than last time, the storm outside meant more people opted to stay home today but Gem was the opposite, she felt more alive during the rumblings of thunder and sheets of rain this city was prone too. The noise outside quieted her racing thoughts the same way a consuming story did, it was a perfect day to listen to the rain and find a new fantasy world to get lost in.

Peering around, she is disappointed when she doesn't see Techno as she was hoping he would be working, he seemed to know instantly what type of stories she liked and was hoping for another suggestion from him. She does happen to spot a familiar face and that previous feeling is forgotten as Aimsey waves her over to the coffee bar.

"Gem! Good morning!" Aimsey practically vibrated with caffeine, a wide smile welcoming the redhead to their work station. "Whatcha craving today?"

"I'd love a green tea with a splash of honey please, oh and one slice of the banana bread." She orders, giving into the regret from her first visit when she didn't try any of their freshly baked pastries that filled the shop with their delightful scent alongside the many flowers and blossoms scattered here, there and everywhere.

"Do you wanted it warmed up?"

"That sounds amazing." Gem answers with a smile, revelling in how calm she feels within these four walls. "Is Techno working today?"

"Not until later, he's on the evening shift today. I can do my best to help instead?" Aimsey offers while preparing what Gem requested, starting to boil some water as she waits for the bread to heat up.

"It's okay, don't worry about it. I just wanted to thank him for suggesting the book he did, I adored every single word and look forward to reading it again soon."

"Checks out, Techno might seem distant at first but he's got a knack for understanding what people like even after only one meeting, his insight is frankly scary sometimes." Aimsey chuckles, Gem can't help but agree based on what she had seen already. "Well if you do stick around for a few more hours his shift starts at three, feel free to wander about but if you need anything don't hesitate to ask!"

Sliding a mug of tea and the banana bread she ordered across the counter, Gem pays then walks over to the closest shelf to start looking through what was for sale. Placing down her bread and tea on a nearby end table she starts picking volumes off the shelf and reads the summaries, putting some back but starting her own pile of potentials to consider once she returns to the wingback chair she claimed the first time. A familiar fae story found its way back into her consideration pile, Gem's heart filled with joy realizing this book hadn't been purchased yet.

After she has five books she retires to the chair, picking up the volume about faeries while sipping at her tea which was finally cool enough to drink, working her way through her banana bread while reading the first few chapters of the novel. It takes less than five chapters before Gem knows this is a purchase she wants to make, placing it down to check through the next one she had found.

Undecided on the second one, she is midway through putting it down when the shorter brunette teen that she saw arguing the first time approaches her with a shy smile, holding out his hand. "I wanted to apologize for how I acted when we first met, Toms drives me up the wall but it isn't fair that we brought that into Crows & Chapters. My name is Tubbo, by the way."

Gem shakes his hand with what she hopes is a reassuring expression, smiling. "It's okay Tubbo, my name is Gem. Please to meet you."

"And you as well, Techno and Aimsey both spoke highly of you and I wanted to make things right."

"That's sweet." Gem's cheeks warmed with a faint blush, wondering how after a single meeting they all liked her immediately. "How long have you worked here?"

"Pretty much since I was the legal age to be employed, Phil gave me this position as my first job alongside Toms, we have been best friends since we were kids. He often puts us on opposite shifts though…our arguments can get loud on occasion."

"I noticed." Gem replied in a dry tone, Tubbo rushing an apology until he notices her emerald eyes holding a teasing glimmer. "Don't worry about it, I have a few friends from my home town who are exactly the same way. Sometimes those who care the most also provide the loudest opposition, you should hear when my friends Tango and Impulse get going, especially if Skizz and Zed are involved. They have left my ears ringing before, and not just from the music they make."

"I've heard similar explanations about me and Toms." Tubbo chuckled, picking up one of the books Gem had chosen with an approving nod. "Techno mentioned you like fantasy, I've listened to the audio-book of this story and its a good one."

Speak of the devil, the man they were discussing appeared from behind the counter while fidgeting with his apron, Gem glancing at her phone and not realizing it was nearly three o'clock already. Pearl mentioned she wanted to have dinner together tonight but that wouldn't be for another few hours, Gem reminding herself to keep a closer eye on time as Tubbo called out to Techno and waved him over.

"Oh hello Gem, glad to see you back!" Techno smiles, taking a moment to ruffle Tubbo's hair affectionately as he grumbles trying to hide his smile.

"Thank you so much for the suggestion, I loved it! Immediately into my personal collection for a reread in the future, the protagonist was written beautifully and my god I love strong, female characters." Gem excitedly explains, Techno nodding along as she speaks. "The ending, oh my goodness, I haven't read an ending that well written in far too long. It was a healthy mix of bittersweet yet full of hope for the future, I can relate in a lot of ways…"

Gem clamps her mouth shut after that ramble, unsure if she felt comfortable with admitting that until Techno kneels before her and places a hand on her knee. "I felt the exact same way, sometimes novels call to you because you need to hear what they have to teach you, even if its a repetitive lesson it can be an important one."

Nodding quickly, she tries to rein back in information she wasn't comfortable sharing yet as she considered her response before speaking once more. "You speak like an author, have you written anything before?"

"I haven't published anything but I am the Dungeon Master for the DND campaign we run here weekly, in fact, we just had a spot open up if you are looking for something to do on Thursday nights?" Noticing her hesitation, he quickly shifts gears. "No pressure at all, think about it, but Aimsey has been bugging me to invite you ever since you first met them. They think you will be a good fit."

"…maybe?" Gem offers quietly, Techno's face smoothing in understanding.

"Anytime, I just wanted to extend the invitation, take some time and you can get back to me later." Standing back up, he claps Tubbo on the shoulder. "Let's not bother our new friend any longer, she still has books to decide upon. After all Tubbo, its inventory day!"

The shorter brunette teen lets out a comically loud groan, Techno's smile only growing at that.

As they walk away Gem's mind whirls with what just happened, still adjusting from spending each day in the safety of her apartment to now being offered a spot in a game she had wanted to play for years but never found the right opportunity to do so. Picking back up the book she had been considering, she weighs the idea of joining this campaign against her anxieties and the expectations that would come from being in it.

To all the people I know that were lovers

But turned into fighters, I wanna say

To all the people I know that needed my love

I wanna say, I wanna say

The third time she enters the shop it is with Pearl and Cleo in tow, all three finally had some free time together and decided to visit the store Gem and Cleo had both been hyping up, entering Crows & Chapters with high spirits in the early afternoon under the midday sun. The redhead takes a deep breath enjoying the decadent smells of freshly baked pastry against the musty smells of books mixed with the greenery blooming around them, Pearl's blue eyes are wide in amazement as Cleo looks on with an expression full of pride.

Out of Pearl's new friends, Cleo was the one Gem enjoyed spending the most amount of time around. From their curly mane of red hair which both could relate to caring for, their ironclad loyalty and their fierce yet blunt attitude was refreshing. They were honest to a fault which meant Gem found herself trusting them nearly immediately, a very rare case for the young adult. On top of all that their laugh was boisterous and infectious, never failing to bring a smile to Gem's face regardless of her current mood.

As all three make it through the door Gem spots her new friend Aimsey right away, appearing to be just going on break they squeal and rush their way over to the trio, excitedly looking over each of them as they skid to a stop with their hand outstretched towards Pearl.

"Why hello there! You must be Pearl and of course, I already know Cleo as one of our regulars." Aimsey addresses Gem's older sister, who accepts the handshakes with a shy smile nodding quickly. "My goodness, good looks run in the family."

Gem's mouth drops open before she giggles watching Pearl turn rosy, Cleo tossing an arm across the tall thin girl's shoulders with a playful smirk and sparkling blue-green eyes. "Isn't she pretty? I keep begging her to let Lizzie and Ren dress her up but she hasn't given into my demands yet, maybe we can convince these pair of sisters to join our DND campaign and then we have a reason to."

"You are part of Techno's campaign?" Gem questions, realizing an easy familiarity does exist between Aimsey and Cleo.

"I come in here and there, Techno runs his campaign in such a way that let's people drop in and out as they can play which only a skilled DM can do well. My main group meets every Friday and its with several people I know from the college but our seasons are much shorter as some of us only live in the city for the length of our terms so I get my roleplay fix here in between." Cleo explains with a proud smile, picking up a small gray figurine picturing a rogue off a nearby shelf and places it upon their palm. "Its a super fun way to expend some creative energy while disappearing into another person's world they spent hours crafting just to guide you through. Martyn can spin a story like no tomorrow, he's a bit of a chaos gremlin but its all in good fun. Techno spends hours crafting the perfect world, Martyn makes most of his up on the spot, its fascinating seeing how each Game Master functions…or barely does."

"It would stress me out to no end to tell a story like that." Techno speaks with a disdainful tone, Cleo rolling their eyes before regarding the tall man who somehow snuck up on all of them.

"You've seen Martyn spin yarn like his life depends on it, you even admitted to me one you were envious of how easily he can manipulate a table without them realizing it."

"You have no proof of this admission." The slightest upturn of Techno's mouth speaks of the fact this is all in good fun, Gem utterly interested in this odd pairing before her but seeing how this friendship worked perfectly with how both of them spoke with heavy sarcasm like it was their mother tongue.

"I may not have physical proof but I do have the memory to remember."

"Inadmissible in court, witnesses are often unreliable."

Gem wanders off to a nearby shelf as they collapse into banter, Pearl joining her sister with a quiet chuckle. "When Cleo recommended this place I didn't realize how familiar they were with it."

"It's hard not to feel at home here." Gem answers, looping her arm through Pearl's. "Last time I asked where the art book section was, want me to show you?"

Pearl's sky eyes light up, Gem smiling as she leads Pearl over to near the coffee bar to a shelf practically groaning over the large books it held showcasing large art gallery catalogues to drawing styles to history texts with faded spines and torn covers. A thick volume with a glossy cover talking about nature landscapes calls to Gem, picking it up as her sister grabs one off a higher shelf and examines it with a warm smile. Aimsey returns to the coffee bar and eventually brings over a tea and coffee for Gem and Pearl, waiving off any payment claiming it was Cleo's treat who refused anything in return and simply stated they were in charge of next time.

Soon the trio who originally entered the shop ended up with Gem back sitting upon her wingback chair where Pearl and Cleo were sprawled across a dated floral loveseat nearby, Pearl absorbed into an art history book while Cleo examined one about tattooing. A few words are traded in between as they absorb time within the calming atmosphere, enjoying this outing which made them all hope these would happen many more times going forward.

Gem peers around those nearby, admiring how relaxed Pearl finally seemed to be and reveling Cleo's quiet yet unwavering strength. It took a while to get here but this city had now begun to feel like a joyful new beginning, and perhaps a place where Gem could heal her heart and confidence. Running her finger down the parchment of the book in front of her, she yet again ponders the offer Techno made her last time she came here. Honestly it helped knowing Cleo was part of the campaign, maybe something could be arranged where they were in attendance for her first session if she accepted.

Rubbing her arms, she tries not to let expectations drag her down and wonders how to face the fears surrounding letting herself get involved in a brand new type of media where others would feel the consequences of her choices.

Her ever observant sister notices Gem's fidgeting right away and gently taps her foot against the redhead's, tilting her head in a silent 'are you okay?' gesture which Gem smiles back, assuring her worried family she is. Maybe its finally time she steps out of her comfort zone, it seems so appealing knowing who would be by her side if she makes this choice.

She has spent far too many days alone in that apartment, letting herself become isolated and trapped with the hurts she was trying to escape whereas from the first moment she stepped through the doors of the Crows & Chapters store a sense of belonging wrapped her in a tight embrace only reinforced each time she returned. Though it was only her third visit, she could see herself coming back anytime she needed something new to read, listening to any recommendations by the workers who now knew her, or even just to have a quick chat with Aimsey as they ran the coffee bar.

Her overall mood had risen significantly since she forced herself to leave her safe space, Pearl encouraging her each time she did with a proud expression between her classes and shifts at the nearby art gallery. Last week she even went out for a walk with Aimsey and their girlfriend Guqqie, grabbing a coffee at the book store before wandering through a nearby park until the streetlights turned on, lost in their conversation about their mutual interests. Each time she checked her phone these days she had something to reply too, between getting caught up with her friends from their old town and hang out plans in this new city it was busy but a good kind of busy.

This new and exciting chaos in her day to day life was a welcome type of busy, it warmed her heart and made her wonder how it would feel to let others in to parts of her she had never shown, perhaps melting things held behind ice into a new beginnings. Gem had spent every day thickening the defenses she held herself behind, locking herself in with the voices that complained she was never good enough, but now her fortress was being slowly whittled away by those who only had the best intentions and perhaps it was finally time to let them in.

Can you hear me now? Can you hear me now?

I'm singing out as loud as I know how, but am I loud enough?

I got my voice and you got yours

So let's make a little noise all together now

The fourth time she makes her way through that familiar doorway it's similar to when she first entered, nerves causing her fingers to tremble thinking of what lies ahead of her. The Hermits were performing their first show in the local stadium and the sisters promised they would return for their first big event, with the long car ride ahead Gem needed a new book to occupy her thoughts away from where they would be returning. Though her hometown held plenty of people she was very fond of it also held the judgemental hearts of the souls Pearl felt the need to protect them both from, already planning ahead of time to drive both there and back over the same day. It would be a long day for everyone, Gem already planning to steal the keys and taking a shift driving home when the sun returns to its bed upon the horizon. Pearl would insist she was fine but Gem knew when to force her hand, the siblings plenty adept at reading each others signs and knowing when the other needs a break.

The redhead waves at Aimsey who is serving their customer with a bright smile, bringing laughter out of the individual who awaited their order with an ease Gem was in awe of. Aimsey's natural charm never failed to bring joy wherever they went, a gift Gem intended to treasure as long as they remained friends. Tubbo and Techno were hauling boxes from the back of the store under Kristin's direction as Phil stared at his family with all the affection held within their beautiful store, a gentle smile softening his face and shining within his sky-blue eyes. Tommy is rambling about something at Phil's side, occasionally stopping mid-ramble to take a large sip from the coffee in front of him before he continues his rant about something Gem couldn't quite follow.

Running her fingers along the cracked spines of the books in front of her, the broken volumes calling to her heart and beckoning her next adventure with pretty words spilled across parchment in fading ink. Unintentionally she wanders over to the clearance shelf, knowing how it feels to be discounted she tries to find her next favourite among the various novels stacked in front of her.

Per usual, Techno manages to approach her without a sound until he clears his throat, making her jump with a fond expression upon his normally stoic face. "What is my favourite customer searching for today?"

"Awww, I am your favourite?" For the first time in too long, Gem's playful nature bears a shy glance adding a teasing lilt to her voice that brings out Techno's own mischievous tendencies.

"You are growing on me." Forever withholding true satisfaction of agreeing with a compliment, Gem nods knowing that's as close as she will ever get to Techno praising her but that fact somehow doesn't bother her. "We just got in a new shipment of books and I found a pirate tale I forgot about, it is damaged though so I wasn't going to sell it for full price, do you want a sneak peak before I add it to the shelves?"

He chuckles as the redhead nods enthusiastically, leaving to return behind the counter as Gem walks over to Aimsey now that their customer had wandered off to peruse the shelves they were surrounded by. Their infectious happiness is nearly overwhelming as they notice Gem coming their way, already turning to flick on the kettle for the tea she was craving.

"My favourite customer!" Aimsey greets, Gem's laughter nearly overwhelming her before she points towards Techno after the brunette tilts their head in confusion.

"Techno just said the same thing, is there some kind of vote I should be aware of? How do I help my own campaign to be the store's favourite customer?" Gem teases, blown away by Aimsey's genuine reply.

"Just be your delightful self, its all you ever need to do." Aimsey grins, catching the way Gem's lips tremble and eyes becoming misty with a shrewd expression that spoke of a good sense of wisdom surrounding emotions and their connections. "Oh sweetheart, I know you don't speak much about your past but you are so much more than they ever said, stop letting those hurtful things hold you back."

And just like that, on a random Tuesday her fourth day entering Crows & Chapters, Aimsey smashed through the final wall around Gem's heart and she has to lean against the counter. Reaching forward, Aimsey's smaller hand covers Gem's delicate, freckled one, and holds it tight. "I will never pry further than you are willing to reveal, but just know there are people here who care about you and want to get to know you more, regardless of what baggage you bring with. Friends help you bear that weight and support you through everything, not shame or embarrass you for your insecurities or shortcomings."

The kettle whistles, indicating its completion as Gem's friend turns to finish making her drink, adding a splash of honey before serving the steaming mug into her waiting hands. Leaning against the counter Aimsey rests his chin on his upturned palm, reaching out to clasp their hands together again in a grounding gesture they immediately clocked was effective on Gem's anxieties, reminding her silently someone else will be there for her no matter what she has to say.

"Something is troubling you, want to talk about it?" Aimsey speaks ever so quietly, so the noise of the store drowns out their talking wrapping them in a tiny bubble with an open floor, waiting for Gem to confess her concerns.

"Pearl and I are driving back to where we used to live this weekend for our friend's music show and as excited as I am to be supporting my friends I do not want to go back there." Gem shudders, feeling the smallest amount better even just admitting it. "Pearl has been looking forward to it for weeks as she intends to meet up with some of her closest friends but I know the moment we cross those town boundaries I will want to run back here immediately."

"Ah, I getcha." Aimsey hums, squeezing their grasp tighter for a brief moment before using their thumb to run soothing circles across Gem's knuckles. "I am only a call or text away if you need a reminder that you are so much more than whatever box you were forced into, those in your past do not deserve to lay claim on your future if they have brought you harm. They lost that privilege the moment they tried to contain your creativity and whimsy, suffocating and surviving is not the same as thriving."

"…I did not give you an all access pass to my inner thoughts." Gem weakly jokes, Aimsey offering a secret wink.

"I only know the signs cause I struggled with it too, myself and the family are in a much better spot than we were but I know not everyone is lucky enough to receive that second chance from those who hurt you originally. If you need that second chance, I will be at the forefront of it for you and so will everyone here without question or judgement."

Gem, overwhelmed and unable to speak at that moment, rounds the counter and yanks Aimsey into a tight hug, who goes along with a shocked grunt before they are embracing the redhead with everything they possess. Whispering into those chestnut tresses, Gem confesses something she had never been able to speak aloud. "All I have ever done is let people down, why would I even deserve that second chance?"

"Because you are exactly who you are meant to be, and I am so excited to watch you become more than you ever believe you deserved." Leaning back the smallest amount, Aimsey meets their gazes together hoping their words sink into Gem's cautious soul, tender and delicate with new trust slowly blooming under everyone who was associated with the Crows & Chapters establishment and their welcoming affection. "I have one hundred percent faith everyone here feels the exact same, you shape conversations even when you aren't here Gem, you belong with us. Something brought you here, call it fate, God or the universe, but you ended up here for a reason and if that's because you need healing and love, I will always be first in line. Behind maybe Techno, he puts up a faraway front but that only protects the golden heart that beats within his chest."

"Stop giving away my secrets." Techno grumps, making both of them start as he suddenly appears as he is apt to do, dropping his deep voice to barely a mumble. "Just because you are right doesn't mean you should tell everyone."

"You big teddy bear, your secret is plainly available for anyone with eyes." Aimsey's snark earns them a fond eye roll, Techno dropping a novel on the counter beside Gem's waiting tea.

"You are a troublemaker."

"Everyone who works here is. I am pretty sure it's even a rule in the employee handbook." Aimsey fires back, earning a chuckle from Techno.

"That's only because Phil wrote it and begged me to leave it in, the amount of editing I already had to do anyways I gave up on removing everything. That man doesn't know how to be professional at all, the swearing was one thing but the sarcastic commentary was another." Techno grumbles, lightly poking fun at his best friend he stared at with the slightest upturn to the corner of his mouth with all the fondness he ever held poured into those mahogany orbs before turning back to Gem. "I will only be slightly offended if you don't like this story, it only changed my life and made me revaluate my entire personality when I first read it."

"That's quite a praise to live up to." Gem remarks, studying the cover of the book Techno has left for her. "I am sure I will love it, the first one you suggested to me made me re-evaluate my top ten novels ever list, I am excited to face that struggle again."

"I now have a goal to aim for." Techno replies with an affectionate smirk, which drops the moment something crashes off in the distance following by a long string of curses. "Maybe we got lucky and that book stack took Tommy out, finally achieving world peace, but I highly doubt that despite trying to ignore the racket that is happening."

A comment that makes Gem and Aimsey both laugh, the older man leaving to go solve whatever world-ending problem Tommy had instigated while the redhead flips open the front portion of the book to read the summary printed on the dust cover's front flap. Aimsey hums along to a song recently released they were obsessed with as Gem picked up the book and her tea, retreating to her wingback chair while taking deep breaths to sooth herself.

Settling in, someone sneaks up behind and lays a folded fluffy lilac blanket across her lap. With a musical whistle, Kristin can only smile when Gem spots her before she joins Aimsey at their coffee bar, the redhead unfolding the soft blanket and tucks herself in before reaching for the novel she was considering purchasing. Slipping an earbud in one ear, she flips open the book on her lap and starts to read.

Losing herself to the tale on the high seas, she can practically taste the salt on her tongue and ocean breeze caressing her wild curls as they explored a new world searching for ancient treasure that would make them rich beyond their wildest dreams. Her tea disappears quickly and she finishes her final sip when she is joined by her sister Pearl, who finished class roughly an hour ago and knew immediately where her sister was when she returned to the apartment and Gem was gone.

"More pirates?" Pearl's eyes shine with affection as Gem tosses her a wide smile, nodding her head.

"Techno suggested this one and I think I am going to take him up on it, the concept hooked me within the first few chapters."

"Hooked?" Pearl giggles with an elegant eyebrow arched as Gem realizes she had mistakenly made a pun, joining her laughter.

Letting her messenger bag covered in random patches, embroidered botany examples and various fandom buttons drop to the couch nearby, Pearl sprawls across the sofa with a groan massaging her shoulder where the strap of her bag had been digging in. "Even though its a long weekend I got assigned homework, can you believe that?"

"College professors assigning homework, I can't believe they would do that!" Gem plays along, Pearl smirking in response as Gem continues speaking. "You already have most of it done, don't you?"

"Really, they should have given more." Pearl replies, Gem rolling her emerald eyes. "I only had two lectures today, three hours in the library with music and a fresh batch of motivation caused those assignments to speed by."

"How quickly your story changes." Gem comments drily, nudging her sisters foot with her own. "Try hard."

"Only on occasion." Pearl stands up, looking at her bag before shrugging and making her way over to the shelf covered in art textbooks covering different subjects like history, specific artists or types of creative arts throughout the ages.

Admiring how her proud sister held herself, Gem reflects on how far they had come together. Releasing themselves of their parent's expectations was the healthiest thing they had ever done for themselves, and Gem could never repay just how much Pearl put her life on hold shielding her younger sibling from their difficult parents as long as she possibly could until they made their joint escape.

Moving to a new city several hours away from where they grew up was a risk on many levels, but it came with countless benefits such as friends who genuinely cared for them and this sweet little store that had become a second home to the pair of sisters.

Pearl comes back over to flop on the couch while cracking open a gigantic volume all about flowers and their features in famous art pieces throughout history, enthralled and only interrupted by Aimsey bringing her a huge mug of coffee. They planned to leave early tomorrow morning to begin the journey to the music festival they had confirmed attending, Gem replying to excited texts all day looking forward to many tight hugs from those who raised her.

Despite her nerves she held some cautious excitement about returning back for the day, especially armed with a new book that she could retreat into if necessary, she was as prepared as she ever could be to face her past with her head held high.

Uh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh-oh-oh-oh

Uh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh-oh-oh

The fifth time Gem thinks of the store is while they are driving home from the music festival. Adorned in brand new t shirts that were given to the sisters for free by the band they went to support, Pearl has fallen asleep in the passenger seat of their jeep with her over-ear headphones on and a book opened on her lap. The younger redhead knew this was coming, Pearl had a habit of falling asleep on long car trips and they had experienced a lot of excitement today.

Gem reflects on when they had appeared at the venue and she had been nearly swept off her feet by Zed embracing her, followed by Tango's unique laughter above the bickering of their other two band members. Bustled into a private seating area, they were treated to an amazing show where their friends had truly put on their best show yet. The crowd's excitement was infectious, cheering and singing along loudly to anyone who rocked the stage ahead of them and they were the loudest when the Hermits took the stage.

Turning down the after party with heavy hearts, the sister's express how they had to drive back tonight allowing Pearl to attend her shift in the morning which their friends understand but Gem can't help still feeling a bit left out of it all. She knew they moved away for a better future for them but there was the tiniest part of her that would always miss those they left in their rear-view mirrors, seeing their lives continue forward without them.

Checking quickly to be sure Pearl is asleep, Gem clears her throat and addresses the hands free device attached to their cars radio system. "Call Aimsey."

The redhead knew her newest friend well at this point, they dealt with frequent bouts of insomnia which meant they were awake at the oddest times and she guessed right when the brunette answered on the second ring.

"Hi Gem! How was the show?" Aimsey's familiar voice instantly pulls Gem out of the sorrow that was threatening to claim her, smiling at how interested they sound.

"Amazing, everyone loved them! The applause was deafening after they finished their set and Tango just texted me that their merchandise sold out. It's certainly put them on the map and got plenty of new people adding them to their playlists, their socials were going crazy."

"Awww, that's lovely, so glad to hear!" Something falls over in the background of the call followed by a muffled curse, a second voice responding as Aimsey asks a quick question before returning to the conversation. "How are you feeling, Gem?"

"It was odd to be there." Aimsey hums their agreement, waiting for Gem to continue. "The way my mindset was immediately surrounded in paranoia, I was looking over my shoulder the whole night and only relaxed in the final few songs of the set."

"It's weird how immature and unbalanced you can feel standing on the streets you were once upon many years prior." Aimsey speaks aloud exactly how Gem felt, their insight frankly terrifying sometimes for someone Gem had known barely a few months now. Though to be fair, they slotted themselves into her life like they had always been there and they were similar in a lot of ways.

"You always know just what to say." Gem chuckles, Pearl grunting as she adjusts her position but still remains slumbering when Gem glances over to check. "I thought I would be more affected by it all but as we are leaving I am realizing just how much I still miss it, at least some of the people there."

"You never did tell me why you left…feel up to talking about it?" Aimsey asked a question Gem had been bracing to answer for ages, biting the inside of her cheek debating how to answer it.

The silence stretches out for a few heartbeats before Gem clears her throat, deciding to just go for it. "Our parents always had sky high expectations for us, not expecting anything less than perfection. The lives we lived were barely our own; they dictated the classes we took, food we ate, how we presented ourselves among many other pressures that nearly crushed us. Pearl stood up for my choices more times than I could ever repay or remember, sticking close to their plan for her life in an effort to appeal them and leaving me to my own devices but it often wasn't enough. She was placed on the path of becoming a lawyer and I know they wanted me to be a doctor, but slowly the overwhelming goals they set for us started to break our spirits. Both of us have always been creative and driven by art, not math and logic. Eventually Pearl had enough, approaching me when she was sixteen and I was thirteen with a plan. She had started to put some money into a secret savings account and the moment I turned eighteen we would pack up everything we had and escape their suffocating clutches.

"The day of my eighteenth birthday, we did exactly that. Despite threats of cutting us off and actually going through with it, we haven't spoken to either of our parents since. On occasion I know Pearl checks in with our grandparents and gives them life updates but we put our parents in our past for a reason and we have both become better versions of ourselves because of it."

"That's…heavy." Aimsey replies after a few breaths, pausing to think how to respond before he continues. "For the record, I am proud of both of you for making the choice to save yourselves and strive towards that goal. I say that partially due to my selfish nature and we might not have met otherwise, but I have also seen you come out of your shells in leaps and bounds. The progress you both have made is astonishing, even if we have known each other less than a year I can see your emotional maturity levelling out and fighting for yourself is sometimes all you can do but is also the best thing you will ever do.

"Do you regret it?" They eventually ask a very loaded question, gauging where Gem stood and giving the floor to the redhead.

"No. Never." Its nearly instant how fast Gem replies, shaking her head with a tired smile she feels the weight lift from her shoulders simply admitting without guilt to someone who understood her perfectly.

"Than I think that's the best confirmation you could ever have." Aimsey answers before they give a big yawn, wise beyond their years per usual, that same secondary voice beckoning them to bed in the meantime. "My beautiful girlfriend wants to snuggle and I am feeling very torn…"

"Give Guqqie my love, I'm okay now. I am much better since we met." Her honestly is a welcome relief to them both, exchanging good-nights before the call hangs up.

Pearl reaches out a hand to cover Gem's where it rests on the parking break, an old habit from their prior car that had a manual shifter instead of automatic. The younger sister feels her cheeks redden as Pearl yawns, shrugging off her earphones with her free hand before sitting up taller to the point her head nearly brushes the fabric roof of their car.

"We have found good people in the city." Her voice is scratchy with sleep but unwavering in her determination, squeezing their clasped hands. "They are right, you know. I am proud of us too. We made our own choices and are thriving because of it, art school is ten times more interesting than those boring law lectures I suffered through three years of. And you took a leap, left the safety of our apartment, and found a circle of friends I can completely trust with your well being.

"You smile so much more often in the city than you ever did under their control." Pearl finishes her anecdote with that beautiful sentiment that Gem would cling to forever, feeling its truth in her bones and wrapping tight around her heart.

"Right back at you." Gem meets her sister's gaze with watery eyes, Pearl reaching her free hand over to brush a tear away from the redhead's face while they were at a stoplight. "I love watching your art bloom through the different techniques you have learned and our apartment is the home I always craved as we grew older, that safe space gave me the courage to step outside of my comfort zone and now we have basically been adopted by those who run Crows & Chapters."

"I'd say you were wrong but Kristin literally saved her contact as 'Mumza'." Pearl holds up her phone with the proof, their jeep echoing with their heartfelt laughter as they feel the love they were missing growing up through the mere thought of those who had come to protect them.

"Has Phil texted you any recipes yet? He claims to be jealous of our kitchen because of how big it is for an apartment and it's minus in his words, 'annoying blonde teenagers'." Gem chuckles as she explains, Pearl nodding along.

"Oh his cookie recipe is to die for, he had some at the book store when I stopped by last week and he gave me a free sample. I asked for a copy immediately, which he claimed Kristin was the mastermind behind and he only followed her instructions but they were delicious."

"We have to try making them soon." Gem says on a whim, Pearl humming yes as both their hearts flood with joy and love.

Checking her map, she notices they are an hour out and a wild idea crosses Gem's mind as she addresses her sister. "How about we stop for midnight ice cream at the next place we see?"

"Let's do it!"

Can you hear me now? Can you hear me now?

I'm singing out as loud as I know how, but am I loud enough?

I got my voice and you got yours

So let's make a little noise all together now

For the first time Gem enters the Crows & Chapters store with intent guiding her step, marching directly up to Techno who gives a warm greeting before waiting to hear what she has to say.

"I want to join the campaign." Gem announces on that warm summer day after they returned from their journey for the music event that gave her the strength to make this decision. "I am nervous and worried about this but I have always wanted to play DND and I think you would be the perfect DM for me to start playing with."

A rare grin from Techno overtakes him as he stands up straight, his face brightening in excitement as Gem speaks aloud what she had been pondering for weeks. "We'd love to have you Gem, both you and Pearl if she wants to come too. Cleo had actually planned to join us for the next session as well, so plenty of familiar faces to learn alongside."

Gem practically bounces with excitement, Techno smirking watching her imagination start to come alive with ideas for a backstory for a character she had been slowly crafting over the past several hours. "What do I need to bring? And you said Thursdays, right?"

"Yep, two days from now. If you want to write down your email I can send along a blank character sheet and essentially a beginners kit for what I think you would need. Otherwise if you have any questions I am happy to answer them, or even Aimsey or Cleo could if you decide to ask them first. Both have been playing for a number of years and would be delighted to help I am sure."

Gem left the shop minus a new book yet still a bounce in her step, her mind whirling with possibilities of how she wished to portray herself in this upcoming story Techno was going to weave for them. Pearl agrees nearly instantly the moment Gem tells her she accepted Techno's invite who extended it to include her sister, both of them spending the next two evenings learning everything they can about this role playing game they signed up for between blogs and videos about the subject online.

The sixth time they enter the store its with brand new sets of dice in hand, notebooks filled with ideas of how they wished to present themselves and characters prepared they had spent hours plotting out even the smallest details for. Cleo stood chatting nearby with Kristin and their friend Ren, who Gem met a while ago and had taken a liking to right off the bat. His energy was so pure and genuine that it made everyone around him comfortable instantly, and of course his antics with Cleo were endearing despite how many times the brash redhead told him off while fighting a smile away from their face.

Tubbo, Tommy and someone they clearly knew well were deep in an argument nearby as Aimsey bursts from around the coffee bar and practically tackles Gem off her feet. "Oh my goodness, I am so excited to play with you!"

"Me too." Gem mumbles into their brunette tresses, letting them take her hand and lead her away as Pearl joins Cleo and Ren where they were standing.

Gem works with Aimsey, Phil and Techno to rearrange some nearby tables into forming one large, connected space. Sliding chairs into their positions Kristin covers the huge square in a tablecloth that was coloured like a topographical map, Techno setting up his position at the head of the table with a folding divider that gave him a bit of privacy and hid his plans from his players. Tommy connects his phone to the store speaker system and gives it to Techno who queues up some atmospheric music while the others grab plates of delicious smelling food from the potluck set up nearby.

It had been explained to the sisters it was tradition for those in attendance to bring something food or drink wise for the session, Pearl and Gem both chipping in to make a stir fry dish served over seasoned rice that Pearl had perfected how to make years ago. Grabbing a portion of that, some of the sides and a cookie they claim a spot at the table everyone was slowly gathering around after reuniting post setting the table up.

Gem observed the chaos she was surrounded by with a warm feeling filling her chest with affection and love, when she first moved here she never would have expected to find herself in this position where she was setting up to participate in a game she had always craved to play with people who were once strangers to her besides Pearl. The burdens that had released the moment she was free of those oppressive expectations that threatened to drown her, it was everything she could have ever hoped for.

Paying special mind to one of the first souls she had met here, she reflects on the first day she walked into this bookstore, hesitant and worried about being out of her comfort zone to now where she is actively pushing herself to remain outside of it and allowing herself to fill her memories with new experiences. The pirate book Techno recommended still lay on her nightstand, occasionally she picked it up to flick back through it and immerse herself in the welcoming nature of the Crows & Chapters store and how much it had come to mean to her.

These four walls had given her a safe space to accept herself and gave her a chance to choose happiness over constant worrying that she would never be good enough. They had accepted her without question, flaws and all, with the patience and grace she had come to treasure them all for.

Aimsey was sitting beside who Gem knew to be Sneeg now, apparently he was Phil's brother visiting from out of the city but he tried to make each session he could when he was nearby. People from all walks of life were welcomed around Techno's table, clearly a talented DM with how much his skills had been boasted about by several people who now sat nearby. Tubbo was engaged in conversation with both of the brunettes as Tommy checked something on his character sheet compared to Phil who sat by his side, his wife on his other who was listening with a fond expression.

Laughter echoed throughout the room as everyone settled in for a fun night of becoming the characters they had crafted to adventure through the world Techno had spent many, many hours and days creating and shaping. The joy was almost a physical and tangible thing, feeling like a warm embrace alongside the electric spike of excitement that ran through all their veins at the night ahead wrapped up in an imaginary world they could become whoever they wanted within.

Pearl reached over to wrap an arm around her sister's shoulders, meeting her gaze to her sibling's she smiles and asks. "Are you ready for this?"

"Of course!" Gem bounces in her seat, Pearl's beautiful face bright with love observing her sister's joy and excitement.

Techno clears his throat and stands up, all the commotion in the room quieting slowly as peoples attention are drawn to the man who clapped his hands together to kill the last bit of chatting. Reviewing something on his notebook, he turns to meet each of his player's gazes.

"Welcome to my table! I am pleased and honoured to be the one guiding you tonight on this journey I have plotted out for you, whether you are a returning player or a new one my rules are simple. One, don't be a jerk. Know that everyone here will be playing a character and this will be a lot more fun if we keep that in mind. Two, I have final say on actions and their consequences, though I understand if mistakes happen and we can talk that through when needed. Three, have fun! I expect there to be plenty of distractions with this group and you are most likely going to completely wander off the path I intend for you so only the hours will tell us how this night goes but I am very excited to be trusted with your characters and lets see what shenanigans you all get into.

"With all that said, who wants to play some DND?"

Cheers and agreements are plenty loud as everyone shouts their answer, Techno waiting for the noise to die down before he adjusts his voice to be lower to play into the Dungeon Master persona that suddenly took him over while adjusting the magnificent crimson cloak swept off his broad shoulders and fell to the floor in elegant folds of silky fabric.

"The hot sun rises above the dusty pathway you all walked side by side with your weapons drawn, having just survived a fight which you thought was doomed you are surrounded by those who came to your aid despite being strangers. You have spent many long weeks on the road travelling alone until you were ambushed by those who lay deceased on the path behind you and saved from death by those adventurers who now travel at your side. Taking a look at those to the left and right of you, lets begin with some character introductions and descriptions so you can picture the company you now find yourself among. Tommy, if you can start please?"

Immediately swept into this environment Techno described perfectly, she adores hearing each individual player and the race and class they had chosen. Some were returning characters who clearly had a history Gem was eager to discover, where others had chosen the new player route alongside Gem and Pearl which helped them feel at ease in more ways than they could ever explain.

During their descriptions Gem's mind kept returning to how far she had come, ages ago when she had walked into the Crows & Chapters she hadn't expected to stumble into the arms of a found family she now would never willingly let go of. They had accepted her and Pearl without question, providing all the support they needed to become better versions of themselves and strive for a level of happiness that was previously unattainable.

Of course, they would still face struggles that came from their past and curve balls life was sure to throw at them in the future. But instead of leaving them floundering and the pair of sisters only having one another to cling to, they now had a waiting net of hands who would do anything for them and expected nothing in return. Their unwavering support was refreshing and the complete opposite of what they faced as they grew up, now truly knowing what unconditional love feels like.

Gem knew she would enter this store at least a thousand more times in the future; whether that be for her next session of DND, to chat with those who worked here or to find a new book (or three) to read per her friend's recommendations. For the rest of her days she would eternally be grateful to the kindness that was given to her without any sort of hidden intentions, and she looked forward to returning the gesture as many times as she could. Instead of a rigid future fighting to enjoy her life, she found a place where all those concerns disappeared and there was no strings attached to their love.

It was truly unconditional and freeing to understand the depth of love that came with each purchase made at the Crows & Chapters bookstore, and Gem couldn't wait to spend many, many more days in these four walls being immersed in all the love she deserved while allowing herself to heal from her past.

"Gem, its your turn." Techno's voice breaks through her thoughts, waiting with an encouraging expression as the rest of her fellow players listen eagerly for whatever she is about to say next.

"My name is Clover, I am a wood elf ranger who prefers to fight with a bow that is very special to me, alongside my companion through this adventure which is a deer with far too much personality I saved from some hunters in my youth…"

Uh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
