    “Wouldn’t the challenge be fun, Scar?”

    She’s goading him, taunting, pulling him towards something promising, indiscernible to himself. She’s similar to Grian in that way. Her smile is sharp when she speaks. “Go big or go home, am I right?”

    And Scar can tell she says it on purpose, he can see the smugness in the way her lips tilt up, he can see the satisfaction in her eyes. She knows she had him trapped before she even spoke.

    He decides, quite easily, that if he is willing to do this for Grian, then he is also willing to do this for Pearl.

    Or, Scar finds himself wrapped up in centuries-old customs that are much larger than himself. No one is surprised when he stumbles into love.

    A bright, glowing green lightsaber cuts through the door of Grian's cell. Buzzing as it goes, the metal metals like it’s nothing, arcing in a circle just big enough for a person to fit through. It looks straight out of an action holo. The cut-out part of the door pushes through and crashes onto the floor near Grian’s feet.

    A head of tousled brown hair leans into the cell. Eyes as green as the lightsaber meet Grian’s. The man’s face breaks into a knowing, roguish grin.

    “I’m Scar Goodtimes,” he says with a flash of his teeth. “We’re here to rescue you.”

    A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away....

    “You know Grian, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a panda before.” Scar states casually, as if that isn’t the most insane thing to say with no prior context.

     

    “What do you mean by that Scar?” There’s an obviously-tired tone to Grian’s voice, which can be easily explained by the fact they’re lounging in their living room, sprawled across each other with a blanket carelessly tossed over them both. They had just finished watching a claymation movie Grian demanded they watch around Christmas every year and were soon to head off to bed.

     

    Scar tells his boyfriend Grian he doesn't believe in pandas and Grian sets out to prove they exist.

    Somewhere along the way, Scar realises he wants to marry him as soon as possible.

    When Grian was informed that he would be given a bodyguard for his journey to the Rift he was… well let’s just say displeased would be putting it mildly.
    Unsurprisingly, nobody in his family would listen to his very reasonable objections.
    “Grian, mate,” Mumbo had said exasperatedly in response to his complaints. “It’s not a personal insult to your abilities. It’s just a matter of national security, you know? Think of it like… extra insurance.”
    “More like extra annoying insurance,” Grian had grumbled.
    “Oi, stop being a pain,” Mumbo had said, grabbing Grian in a headlock and rustling his hair. “Besides, every bodyguard I’ve ever had has been quite boring. You probably won't even notice they’re there.”
    Christ, Grian wished Mumbo had been right.

    Or: Scar has been hired to be Prince Grian's bodyguard for a year-long journey to study the Rift. Grian is not happy about it.
    Grian quickly comes to realize that he needed Scar much more than he would have thought. It takes him much longer to realize that feeling is more than friendship.

    Grian barged into the basement, collapsed to his knees in a heap of feathers as he dragged the closest bucket over and heaved into it. He didn't question where the bucket came from, he didn't question how cold everything was and how blazing hot and dense the air seemed to be at the same time, boiling his blood and coiling his stomach in too thick cotton— 

    He heaved again, coughing and sputting, his throat clenching and pushing bits of bile and whatever food was left undigested up. He couldn't stop it. He couldn't stop smelling the pungent stench of charred flesh, it consumed him, seeping into everything crevice of his soul— 

    He heaved, panting and convulsing, parrot wings dead weight and greasy with dishevellment against his back, his hair in a not too different state, sweat soaked and clumped into chunks.

    Grian was a soldier, he did as he was told. Anything to defeat the cruel evil of the Watchers, but having to kill...to harm...what did that mean for his own sanity? What did that mean for his health? What did that mean for the war that waged mercilessly around him?
    What did that mean, when Scar...an enemy soldier...showed him love?
