Work Text:
Halfway through writing his note, Johnny crumpled up the paper and tossed it in the trash.
This is stupid. I should just tell her face to face.
But how?
Every time he tried to apologize, she just disappeared. And knowing her, it was to make a quick escape.
There’s no way she’s still listening when she does that…right?
To him, it had really seemed like the right time to bring up the… sensitive subject.
Clearly, it was not.
It all started when he saw Sue lying unconscious on the kitchen floor and freaked out. Reed ran into the room, but by then, she was already waking up and seemed fine.
“Oh, I must have fainted,” she said casually.
“Yeah, being pregnant will do that you,” Johnny said, with a smirk.
Well, at least she seemed pregnant. It’s not just that she was getting fatter. She looked rounder, too. And there were lots of other signs, too.
Sue and Reed stared at him, not saying anything.
Was he crazy? Had he imagined it all?
Johnny usually liked to think he was pretty smart, but now he was feeling just plain stupid.
Now that he thought about it, those two had been suspiciously, awkwardly, silent about the whole thing. There were so many moments where they seemed about to say something, but didn’t. Maybe they acted that way because something was secretly very wrong.
I should’ve just waited until she was ready. It wasn’t my time to say anything.
It was a sleepless night for Johnny. The embarrassing moment replayed in his head over and over again. He told himself that he would try talking to Sue again in the morning, but then spent most of the next day avoiding her. It was just too awkward.
Finally, dinner time came. Now, he had no choice but to face her at the table. On his way there, Johnny dragged his feet, casting his eyes to the ground.
“Hey, Johnny!” Sue said. “I feel like I haven’t seen you all day.”
Johnny slowly looked up to see that his sister was…smiling?
I guess she’s not mad at me after all.
After everyone sat down, Sue said that she had an announcement.
“I think that I’m finally ready to tell everyone the news.”
Her family members stared at her expectantly, their eyes glowing with excitement.
Sue gazed warmly back at them.
“Okay, so…”
