“Would your life turn out different if you’d said no?”
Zoey studied the singed ear of the old teddy bear in her hands.
Outside, raindrops beat steadily against the windowpane.
Baby’s eyes—usually disinterested—flickered with emotion before he shrugged, careless and detached.
“Otherwise, there’d be nothing to look forward to.” His lips curved up, showcasing teeth sharp enough to cut steel. Zoey shuddered; that smile didn’t belong on his youthful face.
Her gaze went to the fabric-thin photograph on the wall: of a younger self, smile giddy and free. Even they weren’t the same person.
Outside, the winds howled.
