Kiryu skipped along the path with eager eyes and a lovesick look on his face. He still couldn’t wrap his head around the fact that it was his first date with Suo. So, naturally, he had to make sure everything was perfect .
Suppressing another urge to jump in glee, he straightened his shirt—the one he specifically bought for his date—and entered the flower shop Kotoha had recommended.
The florist perked up looking at him.
“Good day, young man,” the older lady greeted him, “you look quite energetic. Looking for flowers for a special occasion? Someone special maybe?”
Kiryu grinned impossibly wide. “Maybe both,” he giggled sheepishly.
The kind lady hummed in good faith and beckoned him deeper into the shop.
“Would you like me to put together a bouquet for you? Or would you like to make one yourself?”
Kiryu mulled it over for a moment. Seeing as he knew absolutely nothing about flowers, having an expert help him would be an ideal choice. But it didn’t feel personal enough…
“I would like to pick my own flowers if that’s alright!”
“Very well, dear. Look around and pick whatever you like.”
Kiryu thanked her and started his hunt to pick the best flowers for his Suo-chan.
He didn’t know Suo’s favorite flowers, so he primarily relied only on his instinct. Spotting a purple flower that emanated grace through its petals, he smiled excitedly. It couldn’t be that hard, right?
“Kiryu-kun, are you sure you got the right bouquet?”
“Yes, of course!” Kiryu beamed, “I picked them all myself!”
“If you would excuse me for a second,” Suo turned around and aggressively wiped his eye with the edge of his sleeve.
"A-are you crying?" Kiryu hesitantly peeked over his shoulder.
"N- no?!"
"Then why are you tearing up?!" Kiryu asked, concerned and on the verge of panicking maniacally.
Suo gritted his teeth, turning to look back at Kiryu with a constipated smile on his face. "I'm just so happy to see this bouquet. It's… so beautiful!" He tried sounding sincere, but to Kiryu it sounded just like how he responded to Nirei badgering him to accept Tsugeura’s hangout invitations. “I just didn’t know you felt that way…” he faltered.
Cold dread washed over Kiryu.
Did Suo mean to ask him out for just a regular friendly hangout?! Was the invitation just to go out as friends ?! How could he mess up so badly?!
“Suo-chan, I’m so sorry!” He bowed his head, face flushed red, deeply ashamed of the misunderstanding. “I thought you wanted to go on a date with me and got carried away!”
Suo raised an eyebrow. “But I did want to go on a date with you, Kiryu-kun.”
“Y-you did?”
Suo nodded aggressively, trying to hide his reddened cheeks behind the flowers.
“Then what did you mean…?”
Suo pointed towards the purple flowers in the bouquet while sniffling. “Tradescantia,” he started explaining, “means ‘I respect you, but it’s not love,’ so I thought…”
“Oh my god, Suo-chan, I didn’t know that!” Kiryu looked between Suo and the bouquet with wide eyes. “I just thought they looked beautiful!”
Suo grabbed Kiryu’s hand. “I understand, Kiryu-kun. I’m not upset.” He consoled him by rubbing a thumb over his palm, “I may have let my floriography knowledge get the better of me. I really appreciate your efforts!”
“I hope the other flowers are alright?” Kiryu asked hopefully.
Suo only gave him a pained expression.
“Suo-chan, please be honest with me…” Kiryu pleaded.
“Well,” Suo started, rubbing the back of his neck, “you have yellow carnations, which basically mean contempt. In western floriography they may mean ‘rejection’ or ‘you have disappointed me.’
“White geranium, which means ‘I don’t believe in your love,’ and—” Suo watched the color drain out of Kiryu’s face— “I think that’s enough… Let’s not go to the other flowers.”
Kiryu buried his face in his hands. “This bouquet basically screams , ‘fuck you.’ I’ll never recover from this.”
“Kiryu-kun,” Suo slowly rubbed his back, “I cannot explain how much this bouquet means to me. I have never received flowers from anyone, so I was really happy to see this.”
“You mean it?” Kiryu asked in a small voice.
Suo nodded, “I do. It’s beautiful! I will forever cherish this gift from you.” He confessed earnestly, hoping Kiryu would be able to discern the sincerity in his voice.
Kiryu smiled weakly, still embarrassed. “Say, Suo-chan… were you crying because you thought I didn’t like you back?” He teased.
“Oh no, I’m actually allergic to flowers.”
“…”
“K- Kiryu-kun…” Suo watched in horror as Kiryu snatched the flowers from his hands and started munching on them.
He wrestled the bouquet out of Kiryu’s mouth like preventing a dog from eating questionable objects.
“Please stop trying to eat my flowers!”
Kiryu growled at him before finally letting go. A few petals scattered on the floor while Kiryu looked unsure about what to do with the flowers remaining in his mouth.
Suo stared at him utterly flabbergasted as Kiryu hung his head in embarrassment and spat out the petals. “I promise I’ll get you something nicer later,” he mumbled.
“But this is the first bouquet of flowers I’ve gotten from anyone!” Suo insisted, clutching the bouquet close to his heart while suppressing another wave of sneezes wracking his chest.
“Understandably so if you’re allergic! So just—ugh, give it back! Suo-chan, get back here!”
Suo took his chance to sprint down the street holding onto the bouquet like a life line with an exasperated Kiryu chasing after him.
What a
perfect
first date.
