Akaza’s arm was soaked with the red, with the boy’s red.
As his crows descended from the branches, already eagerly approaching the slowly cooling body, his slick fingers slid against one another, balling into a fist.
“Leave it.” He snapped.
A stygian bird hopped forward, pecking at a ruptured intestine.
“I said leave it.”
A sharp black beak picked at the boy’s still gaping mouth, puncturing his lips, the pathetically thin skin of his inner cheek.
Akaza reached back and wrenched a branch from the nearest tree, the limb breaking off with a loud crack, and hurled it at the birds.
“I said leave him!”
Screeching, the birds took to the air, narrowly dodging the projectile as Akaza panted, chest heaving, just staring at the slumped body as his arm tingled and prickled and burned.
