Chapter Text
(Martha's POV)
"And he was never seen again," my dad finished. The fire dwindled, as if the story had scared it.
"I'll get some more firewood." My older brother, Marcus, offered.
"No, it's past your guy's bedtimes." Mom said.
"One more story, pleeeeaaassseee?" I begged.
My mom sighed. "Fine, what story?"
"My birth story!" Everyone sighed at this. The story had been told so many times that we all could recite it word for word. But I kept wanting to hear it, to see if anything had happened, because I'm not normal.
The rest of my family has blonde hair, and even my parents have matching hair. But for some reason, I have flaming red hair. But that's not it. My dad's eyes are green, and my mom's eyes are blue. So, I should get blue or green eyes, right? I don't know much about eye color genes and stuff, but I do know that it's extremely rare to have pale red eyes. But it's obviously possible, because I have them. And after some research in the town library, not far from where we parked our trailer, I read that people get pale red or pinkish irises when there is no melanin in the irises, so the blood vessels are much more visible. But it's rare. But most of all, I can control fire.
Only one other person knows, and that's my little brother, Lucas. He's never told a single soul, and I trust he never will. And currently, he's setting up a bed in the field where we have our trailer, waiting for Mom to start the story so he can take a nap. The first sign of my powers was at my birth, which my mom is about to talk about.
"So you were born March 12, 2013, at 7:34 p.m. Eleven years ago. But the strange thing was, moments after you were born, you let out your first cry. And exactly when you let out that cry, the hospital set on fire." Mom shook her head. "It was the craziest coincidence. Thank goodness no one was hurt. Now, bedtime."
As we walked into the trailer and got ready for bed, I thought about the second time my powers had shown.
I was only four, and we were gathered around the fire. Everyone but me wanted to go to bed. The fire was dwindling, so Mom said that when the fire was out, we had to go to bed. But the fire didn't go out. In fact, it stayed for a full hour before Mom ate her own words and put it out. No one fed it, it just stayed alive. But it didn't stay dwindling, it grew. When Mom put it out, it was huge! And no one fed it.
Soon I discovered my powers, and now made a little clearing to practice them. I have them under control, except when I'm mad. When I'm mad, watch out.
