Jimmy sighed and grimaced, his shoulders slumping. “Fine…” He stepped forward and gave Jeff a quick, awkward hug, barely leaning in. Jeff didn’t feel like Dad ― his chest was broad, his arms solid, the smell of his cologne sharper, the bristle on his cheek rougher. Even the warmth of him seemed different, stranger. Still, Jimmy pressed a fast kiss against his face before pulling away.
Jimmy grabbed a small flashlight, and headed toward the tent outside. The cabin felt quiet after the patter of small feet left the room. Jeffrey took a sip from his empty can, watching Jimmy head out the door, sighing as he vanished out into the clearing. “Your boy's growing up fast,” Jeff said quietly.
