Work Text:
Morning sunshine was filtering through the bedroom window after a night of rain. Kate opened her eyes to find Sonny sleeping on his stomach beside her. The blanket had slipped, exposing the scar running down the length of his spine. Without thinking, Kate pressed her lips to the scar and kissed it. The first kiss was soft and careful. The second was a playful peck. On the third kiss, Kate pressed her lips to Sonny's skin and let them linger. Sonny mumbled in his sleep, and his eyelashes fluttered groggily.
"Kate?" he breathed.
She tickled his scar with the tip of her nose before moving higher to place a kiss on his shoulder. "Good morning." She ran a hand through his hair, attempting to smooth stray hairs into place.
"Good morning to you, too." Sonny smiled at her, and then his eyelashes kissed the top of his cheeks, and he appeared to drift again.
"How's your back?" asked Kate, giving him a light massage.
"It's fine now that you kissed it better." He opened his eyes fully and smiled at her brilliantly. The smile warmed Kate, although she only had Sonny's shirt on and the comforter was pulled down low.
"Has anyone ever done that?" she asked.
Sonny appeared to drift again for a second. "Done what?" he asked in his sexy, sleepy voice, which made Kate want to smooch him–and not just light kisses on his back.
"Kissed your scars better."
Sonny opened his eyes fully and turned on his back with a hum. "No," he said, looking at her with adoration, "you're the first."
Kate smiled, looking down and biting her lower lip in shyness. Sonny pulled her towards his bare chest. "Come here," he said, kissing the top of her head.
Later, they were in the kitchen making breakfast. Kate was sitting on the counter, the gift bear plushie Sonny had brought her when he arrived yesterday in her lap. Sonny was moving about her kitchen, making pancakes and cutting up fruit. He fed Kate a piece of fruit and then plopped another into his mouth. He wiped the stickiness off his hands on his apron.
"I didn't expect you to get attached to Mr Bear so quickly."
Kate's eyes lit up. "How do you know it's a boy?" she teased him.
Sonny shrugged.
"No, no," said Kate, touching the plushie's head to her cheek, "it's my gal, Miss Bear."
"Uh-huh," said Sonny, popping the first pancake on the platter.
"Miss Bear will hear a lot about how I wish you could be here for all the mundane and extraordinary moments I have to settle for telling you about on videocalls."
Sonny poured more pancake mixture into the pan. The sizzling noise filled the kitchen. Sonny let the pancake cook and closed the space between him and Kate. She softly bumped her knee into his body. Sonny moved in to kiss her lips, but he was met with some resistance.
"I don't like the feeling of missing you," Kate said, "and I don't like the feeling of time running out on us, either. Case in point, you're here for only two days."
Sonny brushed his nose against hers tenderly. "Then, let's make them count."
After breakfast, they took a walk outside. The air smelled of freshness and wet soil. Both had their cardigans on to ward off the chill of early autumn. They walked along the trail leading to Kate's house with their hands clasped. At some point, Kate slipped her hand free of Sonny's and started walking backwards playfully.
"Race you!" she said suddenly and ran ahead of him.
Sonny caught up and caught her in his arms. He kissed the side of her head. Both were laughing.
"I think I'm ready," said Sonny when their laughter died down.
"Ready for what?" asked Kate, brushing back a strand of hair the wind had whipped across her face.
"Ready to finally stay in one place," said Sonny seriously. "Ready to build something new. With you. In for the long haul and all that."
Kate was looking at him with tears in her eyes–and Sonny suspected it wasn't just because of the whipping wind. "Sonny, really?"
He nodded. Kate smiled, and so did he. They looked at each other for a long moment, Kate in Sonny's strong embrace. Then, they leaned in and kissed.
