Chapter 1: The student in the art room

Chapter Text

————

It’s October when Chuuya walks down the hallway in college, stealing a glance out of the window to her right. Dead leaves cover the ground in various brown tones on the empty campus. The sky is cloudy gray and it looks suspiciously like it’s going to rain soon.

Chuuya hurries up, her big steps echoing trough the empty hallway. Most of the students already left, the bell rang about half an hour ago. But here Chuuya is, making her way to the art wing of the college after school ended, with her backpack over one shoulder and a few books in hand.

The hallway comes to an end and Chuuya stops at a wooden door, straight up entering. She didn’t even think about knocking. The door slams open.

‘Osamu! Where the fuck are you?!’

She walks trough the art room, over the dirty floor that’s covered with smudges of paint, passing various unfinished canvas and drawings lying on the table or hanging on the walls. The room is huge, with lots of drawers and closets that are stuffed to no end with art supplies. In the middle of the room are two large tables, a seat for each art student where everyone has their fix places. The back wall mostly consists of large windows to view the park on the campus.

Chuuya marches through the back of the room and turns left to a corner that’s mostly used to stock big empty canvas or wooden and paper utensils.

Except that one art student sneaked their supplies in here, now peacefully drawing while sitting on the floor in a position that only can be extremely uncomfortable.

‘Oi, Osamu. Get the hell up, we gotta catch our last bus. Didn’t you hear the bell?!’

‘Huh?’

Dazai looks up from her position, taking one wire earphone out of their ear. She’s met with an angry Chuuya face she knows too well by now.

‘Sorry’, she says, sounding not at all sorry. They smirk. ‘Must’ve missed the bell. But look what I’ve been doing!’

They stand up a bit wobbly, her legs must’ve fell asleep during this long, uncomfortable position on the floor. She stands next to Chuuya, revealing the big paper that’s lying on the floor, covered with a pencil sketch of Chuuya and them, walking down a street, surrounded by small shops and trees.

Chuuyas eyes widen, and the corners of her mouth lift up a bit. She recognizes this street. Dazai and her always like to go there in their free time, visiting the old shops and the bookstore they love, or just going to their favorite Café.

She can’t find herself being too angry now, despite still being slightly pissed from having to search Dazai for so long after they didn’t show up when the bell rang.

‘Osamu… When did you-‘ she sighs, still looking at the sketch. Her heart warms up just the slightest bit.

Dazai looks at her expectingly, teasing. ‘What? Does the slug not like my masterwork?’

‘I do, you stupid mackerel. But you’ll have to finish it some other time.’

She takes out her phone and shoves it into Dazais face, showing the time on the lock screen.

‘It’s late. We need to leave.’

Chuuya raises one eyebrow as she sees Dazais reculant face.

‘But chibiiiiii-‘

Chuuya takes Dazais hand - dirty with paint - , and practically drags her away while balancing her own schoolbooks in the other hand.

‘C’mon, Osamu. Where is your backpack?’

Dazai pouts, letting themselves be dragged out of the art room, away from her beloved environment.

‘At home. I forgot to bring it…’

‘Great’, Chuuya commends but it’s hard to tell wether or not it’s meant sarcastically. ‘Let’s head straight to the bus station then. We gotta run if we wanna catch the last bus.’

And so they do. They run back in the empty hallway Chuuya had walked through a few moments ago, hand in hand which is probably stupid because it slowes their running efforts down, but neither of them let go. They run through the mostly empty building and exit through the main college entrance.

There’s a light rain coming from the dark sky as they run to the bus station near the building.

They both let go of the other’s hand now, breathing hard.

‘We’re perfectly on time,… slug. Told ya.’ They have approximately a minute until their bus arrives, being five minutes late to their Favour.

Dazai smirks and buries her hands in their dark brown coat. It was midly cold and there was no place to hide from the small raindrops that steadily fall on top of their head.

Chuuya only murmurs an ‘Asshole’ under her breath and leans next to the brunette, the hood from her hoodie up. She had her orange hair carefully hidden under it, preventing it from getting too wet, other than Dazai, whose coat didnt have a hood at all.

Chuuya could already picture the wet mess of long dark brown hair that she’d untangle later on in their dorm. She always pretended to hate having to take care of Dazais hair but actually, she really liked running her fingers through that straight, hip long hair of theirs.

She even began to wonder if Dazai was only being lazy and just didn’t care about their hair, of if she left them without doing anything on purpose so Chuuya eventually has to help her.

Chuuya can only guess so far.

On the hill, the front lights of their bus appear and come closer. Chuuya and Dazai both step in as the bus stops in front of them, settling in the very back of it.

Dazai sits down at the seat on the right next to the window to be able to watch the little raindrops falling down against it. She’s glad that the bus is fairly empty, only a bunch of other people sitting separated. They had always preferred less crowded places who also came with some sort of silence, despite being known for having a rather loud and silly personality.

Chuuya sits down on the seat next to Dazai, her backpack on the other side of her. She tries to stuff her two schoolbooks into her already full backpack so they won’t get wet.

After some swearing and a crumpled edge of at least one book, Chuuya has successfully stuffed them in, her backpack now reminding more of a ball than its initial form.

‘Need help, chibi?’ Dazai smirks, head turning to the redhead.

Their long hair fall into her face, damp from the rain, and the bandages at their neck peak through from the collar of her shirt. She has her coat wrapped tightly around them.

Chuuya huffs. ‘I’m perfectly fine, thanks.’

She sinks deeper into the seat, leaning her head on Dazais shoulder. Chuuya normally isn’t really a person of much physical touch, but she had this exception for the stupid brunette.

In fact, now that she thought about it, she had a lot of exceptions only for them.

‘Chibi won’t even accept my help. Tsk’ Dazai mutters dramatically, but she wraps their arm around Chuuya when she leans against them without comment.

She earns a bump with Chuuyas elbow against their ribs with that.

‘Shut up, mackerel.’
