Work Text:
It’s a cloudy September night in Smiling valley, and a certain Catdog pup was very excited.
Lunette was sitting on his bed, anticipating, while waiting for his parents to return.
A few days ago, his two dads had decided that they wanted to have another child, and tonight was the night they decided to go to the cliffside, so they could wish on the almighty star.
And now, they were finally bringing him or her home!
Lune was bouncing off the walls with excitement, waiting happily to meet his new baby brother or sister.
Then, he heard the front door opening.
Squealing with excitement, he hops up off the bed, running downstairs.
Catnap smiles as he sees him, walking through the door.
“Hey little moon!”
He says, leaning down for a hug. “Are you excited?”
Lunette smiles, hugging him happily.
“Yea!” He says. “Is the baby here yet?”
Catnap smiles and nods. “Yep.”
He gestures to the door, Lunette looking excitedly.
Then, Dogday walks in, carrying a little orange bundle in his arms.
Lune walks over, super excited as his dad kneels down to show him.
“Meet your new sister, Solena.”
Dogday says happily.
Lune was very excited as he looked upon the little baby.
She was a small, light orange colored kitten, with a dog tail.
Almost the exact opposite of her big brother.
Lune’s eyes sparkle.
“Aww, she’s so cute!”
He says, quietly.
He smiles as she opens her eyes, seeing him for the first time.
“Hi baby Sol!”
He says quietly, gently lifting up a hand, hoping she’d grab onto one of his fingers.
“I’m your big brother!”
Solena silently leans towards Lune’s hand… but then…
She BITES it.
Lune gasps in horror, pulling his hand back.
“She bit me!”
He says, tearing up.
“Oh, she’s probably just hungry.”
Dogday says as he stands up, then gently passes the baby to Catnap, who goes to the kitchen to feed her.
Lune cries.
“I-I thought she would be my friend…”
Dogday kneels down, gently picking him up.
“She will be, moonbeam.” he says. “Come on, let’s go help papa.”
Lune sniffles.
“O-okay…”
Dogday carries him to the kitchen, where Catnap was bottle-feeding Solena.
“Hey,”
Catnap whispers with a smile. “Is little moon okay?”
Dogday nods.
“Yeah, he was just a little startled after almost being a snack.”
He says with a quiet laugh.
He looks down to Lune.
“But you’re feeling okay now, right?”
Lune nods.
“Yeah…”
He whispers.
Catnap smiles. “Well good.”
He walks over so Lune can see Solena, him watching her curiously as she sucks on the bottle, enjoying her milk.
“Why doesn’t she eat normal food?”
He asks.
Catnap looks at him.
“Well, because she’s just a baby.”
He says quietly. “Her tiny stomach isn’t big enough to handle grown-up food yet.”
“Ohhh.”
After Solena was finished with her milk, Catnap walks upstairs and sets her in her cot, Dogday and Lune following, then goes back downstairs to wash the bottle.
Dogday lifts up Lune, so he can see Solena better.
Lune smiles.
“Hi little Sol!”
He says. “You’re so cute!”
He gently reaches a hand down, trying to gently pet her.
But then, Solena GROWLS at him, swatting it away.
Lune quickly retracts his hand, looking scared.
“Why doesn’t she like me?”
He says, whimpering.
Dogday gently hugs him.
“Well, she’s just a baby.” He says. “Everything is big and loud when you’re so small…”
Lune looks down. “But… I just want her to be my friend…”
He says.
Dogday gently strokes Lune’s head.
“Just give her some time.”
He says. “I’m sure she’ll warm up to you.
Lune mopes.
“I hope so…”

Over the next few days, Lune spent a long time with his baby sister, almost always watching her.
He patiently watched while she was being fed, while she was practicing sitting up with either of their parents, even during her naptime, he would watch the little kitten, hoping for her to smile at him, or even just look at him, but… it was like she was purposely ignoring him.
And even when he did try to gently touch her, she would always either bite his hand or slap it away.
But he didn’t give up.
One day, when she had just woken up from a nap, Dogday was gently holding him up, helping him to see her closer.
“Little Sol?”
Lune asks, sadly.
Surprisingly, the baby looks up at him, although she does look a bit angry…
Lune smiles softly.
“Uh… hi…”
He says, waving softly.
Solena sticks her tongue out, then rolls away, closing her eyes.
Lune sighs.
“I… I give up…”
He says, looking at his dad. “She just doesn’t like me…”
Dogday nuzzles him.
“Don’t give up…” He says. “Try one more time.”
Lune sighs, but nods, looking back down to the baby.
“Solena?”
He says, the baby opening one eye.
Lune gulps, leaning closer.
“I-I don’t know what I did for you to hate me… but…”
He starts to cry.
“I-i’m sorry…”
Solena opens her other eye to look at him, just staring.
Shaking a bit, Lune gently puts his hand down, expecting her to hurt him again.
But instead, Sol just starts sniffing it, curiously.
Lune was confused.
“W-what’s she doing…?”
Dogday smiles.
“Wait for it…”
Solena continues to sniff Lune’s hand for a minute or so...
And then… she starts gently licking it.
Lune’s eyes sparkle.
“She likes me!”
He whispers, a bright smile making its way across his face.
Dogday giggles. “I told you she would.”
He says, gently patting Lune’s head with his free hand.
Lune was just as happy as a young yup could be as his baby sister licked and gently nuzzled his hand, showing that she did like him, despite how annoying he was.
~The next day~
Catnap was in the kitchen, preparing some lunch, when Dogday got his attention.
“Hey Nappy!” He whispers, standing by the living room door. “Come look at this!”
Catnap nods, coming to look around the corner.
Lune was sitting on the living room floor, holding baby Solena on his lap, and telling her a story.
“So then, I flew up to the meteor, using my pendant to tilt the planet Saturn, to shoot lasers at it, and make it explode into smithereens!”
He says. “And then all my friends were so happy that I saved them, that they decided to make me eight whole salmon risottos!”
Solena meanwhile wasn’t listening, because she was asleep, but they could tell she was happy, from the sweet smile on her face, and her soft little purrs, and the way she was tightly holding Lune’s paw.
Catnap’s heart melts. “Aww, they’re so precious…”
He says.
Dogday nods. “I know, right?”
He says. “They are our little shining stars…”
A couple lessons were learned that day.
Lune learned about respecting his little sister’s personal space, and Solena learned that even though he was a little annoying, she did love her big brother, a whole lot.
She just didn’t like it when he tried to hug her, but hey, she could let it slide sometimes.
