Work Text:
They were woken to the familiar sounds of a car coming.
“Is that dad?”
Delta glanced towards the road.
“Where's mom? He usually gets here before Dad.”
Blue commented out loud, and Charlie gave her sister a worried look.
“I hope he’s not sick.”
All of them glanced at each other, hating it whenever their mom was sick. It always made them feel helpless because they couldn’t help him, and he wouldn’t be able to visit them until he was better. Whenever he was sick, they spent the entire time miserable and trying to find ways to escape so they could see him.
Standing up, they walked towards the gate and waited to see what would happen.
“The beast mom drives is still here. Maybe mom went home with dad?”
Echo offered, and Charlie looked at her sister, tail wagging in excitement.
“You’re right, maybe they went home together.”
Echo shook her head.
“Dad probably drove Mom home since he was so tired last night.”
“He needs to get more sleep.”
Charlie sighed, and Blue agreed, adding.
“He needs to take better care of himself.”
They watched as the car stopped, and both their parents walked out. Overwhelmed with surprise and excitement, they began barking and rushed towards the gate, eager to know what had happened last night.
“Did our plan work?”
Delta asked in surprise as they watched Mom approach.
“I think it did.”
Charlie smelled the air and noticed the smell of their dad on him.
“He’s wearing his clothes.”
Blue pointed out, and Echo nodded, trying not to get hit with Charlie's tail.
“They came here together.”
“They went back to Dad's nest together.”
Delta pointed out, and all of them chirped, proud of their dad for finally making mom his mate.
“Dad did it!”
They eagerly pressed their snouts against his hand, breathing in the mixed scent of both their parents.
Mom chuckled and pet each of them.
“You’re very enthusiastic this morning. I'm sure you’re eager for breakfast.”
Mom walked away to grab it, and they all turned to Dad, looking proud.
“You finally did it.”
Blue spoke until she noticed the look on his face.
“What’s wrong?”
She asked, and all her sisters glanced at her.
“What?”
“Something's wrong.”
“Did you girls happen to notice something off about Owen?”
Dad carefully spoke as though he wasn’t sure they would understand.
All of them tilted their head, having no idea what he was talking about. All they smelled was his scent all over their mom.
Dad sighed and looked at where their mom had gone in a mix of longing and worry.
“I’m sure it's fine. He just has a lot on his mind right now.”
Their dad sighed, and Blue nuzzled him.
“Thanks, blue.”
He pet her snout while waiting for their mom to come back. They all looked nervous waiting to see what would happen. Now that Dad had pointed out something was wrong, all four of them noticed, and their excitement died down a little. Their mom wouldn’t look at dad as he passed and was quick to put distance between the two of them.
They glanced at each other, wondering what happened and why their mom was acting weird. The tension put them all on edge, and they didn’t have much of an appetite anymore. They also didn’t want to worry their mom, so they quickly ate their food.
They watched as Dad tried to approach Mom, who quickly left for his office instead of hanging around like usual. Their dad seemed troubled by this and kept glancing at the door leading to their mom's office.
“What happened?”
Echo barked, the tension making her irritable.
“Why is Mom avoiding you? Did you do something to upset him?”
Blue glared, preparing herself to comfort their mom.
They kept trying to ask their dad what happened, who couldn’t understand them much, to their frustration. They needed to know what happened between the two of them. Hearing a familiar engine, their mood got worse, and they all turned to growl.
When the fat human stepped out, Delta charged at the padlock's wall, wanting to bite him.
“I bet he had something to do with this.”
All of them growled and threatened to bite his head off. Dad gave them a confused look until he was distracted by the fat man asking for their mom something none of them liked. They all snarled, and their mom came out of his office looking miserable, which only upset them more.
“Get him out of here!”
“I hate him! He’s the worst!”
Delta and Echo scratched at the cage, trying to climb up and pull the fat man down. Mom came over and told them to stop and asked Dad to keep them busy. He then turned back to the fat man, who began talking to their mom.
They barked and growled, not wanting him in their nest.
“Make him leave.”
“He’s stupid and ugly.”
“Let us eat him. Please, just let us get rid of him once and for all.”
Blue stayed behind while her sisters followed Dad, demanding to know what he did wrong. She narrowed her eyes at the fat man, snarling any time he got close to their mom.
The fat man ignored her and kept getting in their mom's space. When she smelled his arousal, her eyes narrowed in disgust and horror. Their dad had competition. This prey human, who reminded them of a pig, dared to like someone as amazing as their mom. She wasn’t going to allow that and began growling and barking. She climbed the wall, causing Hoskins to freak out when she almost managed to snag his pants. She growled, her eyes burning with hatred as she looked at the man. He was shouting and demanding that her mom kill her. She opened her mouth, showing off her fangs. The man ran out of the padlock, and she watched him go, happy to smell his arousal replaced with fear.
“Never come back or else you disgusting prey human.”
When she looked at her mom, he didn’t seem happy; instead, he gave her a stern look, telling her to get down. She did as he asked, even though she didn’t understand why her mom wasn’t happy that she defended their territory and protected him from that filthy human. Maybe she was upset that she didn’t kill the fat man and let him escape.
She went to her sisters, who reassured her that they’d get him next time. They were also just as furious as she was to learn the fat man thought he could get with their mom. They were never going to let that happen, but it also worried them. Dad needed to claim their mom quickly; otherwise, other people were going to swoop in and steal him away.
“What’s the plan, Blue? We need to come up with something fast if dad is going to woo mom before it's too late?”
“I don’t know. I need to talk with Mom and figure out what happened last night. Everything seemed fine when they left. We can’t make our next move until we know what’s going on?”
“Okay, just hurry.”
Her sisters left her alone to do their own thing, and she came over to mom, giving him a sad look. He looked stressed and exhausted. And she felt ashamed knowing she was partially the reason. Even though she hated the fat man, she knew she’d just made things harder for her mom and felt guilty.
She chirped, asking to be pet, and mom sighed. He got off the catwalk and walked over to the gate. She pressed her snout through the bars and nuzzled his hand in apology.
“I know, and I don’t blame you.”
Mom pet her head, and she purred silently, asking her mom to tell her what was wrong.
