Work Text:
why do I admire the sun?
it is as constant as change, but I am glad that
it does not have feelings, or whims, or deficiencies of will, or else
one day it might decide to quit its job, or simply cease to care, or be upset that Earth's 8 billion people and still counting do not worship it
and then maybe it would suddenly stop shining
and then we’d all be fucked, wouldn’t we?
but
it is so gracious and tireless that it keeps burning
radiating with an immense heat, yet it keeps just the right distance, and we are lucky
that it doesn’t venture any closer, or else we would boil inside our skin, as
a beautiful green and blue world eventually fades to a blackened, barren husk
and the sun would not even shed a single sizzling tear
unknowing yet undeniably innocent in its planetary massacre
but yet
it is a pacifist, choosing instead to sustain all life, and asking for not a thing in return
so selfless as it warms the womb of our Mother Earth,
touching all her children, just as it touched my face one day as I walked
for a moment, the warmth on my cheeks made me forget that
i am damaged, dysfunctional and far from good enough, and so
i found myself smiling
and that is why I admire the sun.
