The sun was just beginning to rise, casting a warm golden hue over the quiet streets of Los Angeles. Buck sat in the passenger seat of the SUV, his heart a mix of excitement and anxiety. Next to him, Athena adjusted the rearview mirror, her eyes flickering to the backseat where Buck’s little girl, Hannah, was nestled in her car seat, blissfully unaware of the emotional journey ahead. Today was not just any road trip, it was a journey that was going to be emotional, a chance for Buck to introduce his daughter to the man who had been a father figure to him, Bobby Nash.
“Are you ready for this?” Athena asked, her voice soft yet steady, as she reached over to squeeze Buck’s hand.
Buck nodded, swallowing hard. “Yeah, I think so. I just… I miss him, you know? I wish he was here meeting her, like it should have been.”
Athena’s expression softened. “I know. But this is a beautiful way to honor him. Hannah deserves to know her grandfather.”
With a deep breath, Buck nodded “She does, and she won’t ever not know him.”
Athena gave a sad smile and turned the key in the ignition, and the engine roared to life. As they pulled out of the driveway, Buck glanced back at Hannah, her tiny fingers clutching a soft blanket Eddie had picked out for her. It was a small comfort, but it reminded him of the love that surrounded them, even in Bobby’s absence.
The road stretched out before them, a ribbon of asphalt leading them away from the city and into the long road ahead. Buck had planned this trip in great detail, clipboard and all, mapping out stops along the way to make it a memorable experience for Hannah. Even though she wouldn’t remember it, Athena and he would. He still wanted her to feel the love that had been woven into their family, even if it was through stories and memories.
As they drove, Athena turned on the radio, and a soft melody filled the car. Buck couldn’t help but smile as he watched Hannah’s eyes widen at the sound. “Look at her! She loves it!” he exclaimed, his heart swelling with pride.
Athena chuckled, glancing back at his daughter. “Just like her dad’s. Always ready to dance.”
They made their first stop at a quaint diner, the kind that felt like a slice of Americana. Buck ordered pancakes, while Athena opted for a classic breakfast burrito. As they waited for their food, Buck couldn’t shake the feeling of Bobby’s presence. He imagined what Bobby would say if he were there, teasing him about his choice of syrup or offering advice on parenting.
“Do you think Bobby would have loved being a grandpa?” Buck asked, his voice barely above a whisper.
Athena nodded, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. “Absolutely. He would have spoiled her rotten.” She smiled “I’ll have to do it for both of us.”
After breakfast, they continued their journey, the landscape shifting from urban sprawl to rolling hills and open fields.
They drove down the road, laughter filling the car. Buck felt a sense of freedom, a brief escape from the weight of grief that had been pressing down on him since Bobby’s passing. It was a reminder that life continued, that joy could still be found amidst the sorrow.
As they approached the small town where Bobby was buried, Buck’s heart began to race. The reality of what they were about to do settled heavily on his chest. He had envisioned this moment countless times, but now that it was here, he felt a mix of anxiety and anticipation.
“Are you okay?” Athena asked, her voice gentle as she placed a reassuring hand on his knee.
Buck took a deep breath, nodding slowly. “Yeah, just… thinking about how to explain this to Hannah.”
Athena smiled softly. “You’ll find the words. Just speak from your heart.”
They arrived at the cemetery, the sun shining brightly overhead. Buck stepped out of the car, his legs feeling heavy as he walked toward Bobby’s grave. Athena followed closely behind, holding Hannah in her arms. The little girl cooed, her innocent laughter echoing in the stillness of the cemetery.
When they reached the grave, Buck knelt down, tracing the engraved letters of Bobby’s name with his fingers. “Hey, Bobby,” he whispered, his voice trembling. “I brought someone to meet you.”
Athena gently placed Hannah on the grass, allowing her to crawl toward the headstone. Buck watched, his heart swelling with emotion as Hannah reached out, her tiny fingers brushing against the cold stone. It was a moment that felt surreal, a connection that transcended the boundaries of life and death.
“Bobby, this is Hannah,” Buck said, his voice thick with emotion. “Your granddaughter. She’s beautiful, Eddie’s and my little one.”
Tears streamed down Buck’s face as he spoke, the weight of his grief pouring out in that moment. He felt Athena’s hand on his back, a steady presence grounding him as he allowed himself to feel all the emotions.
Hannah giggled, her laughter ringing out like a melody, and Buck couldn’t help but smile through his tears. “I wish you could see her, Bobby. I wish you could hold her.”
Athena knelt beside Buck, wrapping her arms around him and Hannah. “He’s here, Buck. In our hearts, in our memories. He’ll always be a part of our family.”
As they sat there, Buck felt a sense of peace wash over him. It was as if Bobby was there with them, watching over his family, guiding them through the journey of life. Buck knew that while Bobby was gone, his love would forever remain a part of their lives.
After a while, they stood up, brushing the grass off their clothes. Buck took a deep breath, feeling lighter somehow. “Thank you for coming with me, Athena. I couldn’t have done this without you.”
Athena smiled, her eyes filled with understanding. “We’re a family, Buck. We support each other, no matter what.”
As they walked back to the car, Buck glanced back at Bobby’s grave one last time, a sense of gratitude filling his heart. “I’ll make sure Hannah knows all about you, Bobby. You’ll never be forgotten.” He smiled “I love you, Bobby.”
With that promise lingering in the air, they drove away from the cemetery, the sun setting on the horizon, casting a warm glow over their journey. Buck felt a renewed sense of hope, knowing that while the road ahead might be filled with challenges, they would face it together, as a family. And in that moment, he knew that Bobby would always be with them, guiding them through the ups and downs of life, just as he always had.
As they continued their road trip, laughter and love filled the car, a testament to the bond they shared. Buck glanced at Hannah in the rearview mirror, her eyes sparkling with wonder, and he couldn’t help but smile. This was just the beginning of their journey together, and he was ready to embrace every moment, knowing that Bobby’s spirit would always be a part of their adventure.
