Work Text:
The first letter he wrote was to someone who became like a sister to him. Someone who knew and could tell he was broken and helped him back on his feet. The only other person that knew he is in love with Eddie. Someone he knew he could call when in this situation but couldn't. He won't be a burden to another person if he could help it.
“Dear Hen,
Hey Hen, I'm safe. I promise. Um I don't know how Eddie found out. I guess I was obvious with it. Eddie somehow found out I was in love with him. Or at least I think that's what happened. He asked me to leave, he said he can’t watch me be reckless anymore and add more pain to him and Chirs so im leaving. I thought I was doing better Hen. I tried so hard to be safer but still do my job, it wasn't enough, I'm not enough. I don’t know where I'm going but I will stay safe. Tell Karen that I'll miss her and let the kids know that if they ever need anything I still have their backs. I hope that life works out in your favor Hen. I’ll miss you so much. If you can please make sure everyone is okay. From Buck.”
When Buck dropped the letter off he never realized how much his family cared. The only thing he knew was the dark thoughts in his head. He was in Arizona by the time the first person saw their letter. When Hen got to work Karen called, “Hey Honey there was a letter for you in the mail box. It doesn’t say anything but your name, do you want me to bring it to you at work when I drop Denny off at school?” Confusion courses through Hen’s body, “Yeah that's fine, I’ll see you soon” Once the call hangs up she spots Chim and Bobby talking quietly but tense. Walking up she hears something about Buck and letters. It doesn’t take a fool to figure out that Buck has something to do with the letter Karen is bringing her.
“Hey Cap, Chim, is everything okay?” When Bobby turns she can see his eyes are red. He clears his voice, “We are unsure, I got a text last night from Buck saying he is sick and unable to come in today. When I got here I received a call, Buck had resigned from the LAFD immediately. He also left me and Chim a letter, we don’t know what's going on exactly but he isn’t answering his phone. We don’t know who else has gotten a letter. So far it’s been Chim, Maddie and me.”
Hen takes in a shaky breath at his words, “I think he left one for me as well. Karen said I had a letter and she's bringing it up here to me.” Bobby nods at her words. “I would read it in private. There was no telling what he said in yours.” The group disperses to get ready for their days, when Karen shows up and hands the letter off Hen walks away to the bunk room. Carefully opening and reading her letter she starts to tear up. Tears roll down her cheeks as she takes in every shaky word. Carefully closing the letter she leans back feeling sorrow and lets herself cry. She cries for the man who has become family, who's become like a brother. She sobs for her brother who felt like he had to leave, for being pushed away from Eddie of all people.
