Work Song

Summary:

The cold air ebbs the heat from his body as he walks. The night is dark, with a light mist that covers the land beneath him.

The mountains seem to cradle him above the earth. He looks down and has a sad smile as he sees couples at a drive-in theater together.

He looks up and sees his love.

He sits on the ground and feels the dew on the plants soak into his clothes, lying down and letting the cold seep into his bones.

Work Text:

The cold air ebbs the heat from his body as he walks. The night is dark, with a light mist that covers the land beneath him.

The mountains seem to cradle him above the earth. He looks down and has a sad smile as he sees couples at a drive-in theater together.

He looks up and sees his love.

He sits on the ground and feels the dew on the plants soak into his clothes, lying down and letting the cold seep into his bones.

Bright colors act as a beautiful contrast to the deep blackness of the sky, but he knows that no matter what form the Doctor was in, he would find him beautiful.

The metal of the gun helps the air to numb him.

He wonders what the people below will think when they hear the shot.

Will they just assume someone found a raccoon? Will they think that someone is just having target practice at an odd time?

Either way, they will just brush it off.

Which makes this so much better for him.

This section of the mountains is barren of people; no one ever comes here because it's hard to get there. When he comes up there, he always makes sure to bring supplies for the hike.

He only needed one thing for today, though.
The overgrown grass holds him, a cool embrace that nonetheless makes him feel safe.

One day, he will return to the Doctor.

The world is such a small chance. The odds that the world would start are infinitesimal.

The chances that a single type of flower would be created take millions of years, where every single small thing that happens will mark it forever.

The odds that he ended up working for the Doctor at all were so small, everything is so delicate that a single variable can impact the rest of- well, everything.

The lives of everything on this planet started by chance, and that's how it's going to end.

One day, millions of years in the future everything will be as it was before it began.

One day, there won't be anything left.

And when that happens, he and his Doctor will be reunited. They won't exist anymore, not in a way that matters to the world.

But they will exist that matters to him.

No matter how long he has to wait- the knowledge that one day, when everything is gone, he will be back with the Doctor soothes him.

His heart weighs heavily in his chest, and he smiles softly as he remembers that soon he will be free.

The metal of the gun in his hand warmed from his skin, and it acted as a comforting weight in his hand.

When this is done, he will be back with him.

He flicks the safety off and holds the barrel to his chest.

They will be together in the end.

A loud gunshot echoed through the mountains, and he was right.

The people of the town below didn't notice.

He will rot, with the promises of love attached to his very soul.
