Work Header

Call it what you want

Summary:

“Enid, you’re quiet this evening. Not that I don’t appreciate silent time to write, but it’s unusual of you. Is anything wrong?” Wednesday turned to speak to her, a neutral yet slightly concerned expression on her face, like only she can make.

The interruption pulled her out of her thoughts, and she looked at her girlfriend, who was now walking towards her.

“Oh, um—I’m sorry, I guess I’ve been distracted lately. Exams are… stressful?” She mumbled the last part, not sure if she even believed the excuse she was giving her other half.

“...exams?” Wednesday looked half confused and half annoyed as she asked. “Surely you didn’t expect me to believe that excuse, right?”

Maybe telling Wednesday that she can’t focus because she’s thinking of how her brother could potentially be in a relationship with his roommate isn’t the best idea. So instead, Enid settled for:

“No, I’m sorry. I just can’t focus for some reason. Not sure why, though.”

Or

Enid suspects that Pugsley and Eugene are dating, so she goes into a full investigation around school to confirm her suspicions.

Chapter Text

Enid is starting to think she’s going insane.

She’s currently sitting at her desk, pretending to do homework while her girlfriend sits in front of her typewriter—probably working on another project.

But her mind is somewhere else.

Just this morning, she was sitting in biology class, not really listening, when two hushed voices caught her attention.

Pugsley and Eugene were sitting just a row in front of her, and they were whispering to each other and giggling.

Now, usually this wouldn’t really interest her—because Eugene and Pugsley are friends, and it’s not strange to see friends telling jokes and laughing in class. What really caught her eye, though, was that Eugene was laying his head on Pugsley’s shoulder as he laughed, and the other boy’s hand was on his waist.

At first, she brushed it off as trying to muffle the laughs to not get scolded by the teacher and back support to not fall from the chair, since the lab chairs don’t have backs.

But then, when the class had already ended and she was picking up her things, she saw something from her periphery. Or she thinks she saw it, anyway.

It happened so fast that when she turned to them for a clearer view , they had already pulled away; but she insists she saw Eugene lean in to kiss Pugsley’s cheek and then continue to place notebooks into his bag.

She was left there to wonder what she had seen, while the rest of the class, including the two boys, left for their next class.

“Miss Sinclair, are you okay?” Professor Orloff approached her with slight concern visible on his face. Oh, right, she’s standing there looking like an idiot, and all her things are still on the table.

“Uh, yeah—sorry, I spaced out for a second there.” She chuckles nervously. How long has she been standing there, anyway?

“Well, I’m glad you’re okay, but you’re late to your next class. Unless you were planning to skip?” He said, humor audible in his voice, still looking at how she was making no effort to get out of his class.

“Oh my god, I’m late?! I’m so sorry, Professor. I wasn’t keeping track of time. I’ll be leaving now. Bye!!” Enid said in a hurry, quickly picking up her things from the table and speed-walking to the door.

“That's a shame. I could definitely use some company for the next free period.” He chuckled. “Goodbye, Miss Sinclair.” And with that, Enid bolted for the door and ran to her next class.

So, now, Enid’s head is filled with thoughts about this morning. One part of her brain told her that they’re probably not dating, and even if they were, that it really was none of her business.

The other part of her brain, though…

“Surely you don’t expect me to believe that excuse, right?”

Maybe telling Wednesday that she can’t focus because she’s thinking of how her brother could potentially be in a relationship with his roommate isn’t the best idea. So instead, Enid settled for:

“No, I’m sorry. I just can’t focus for some reason. Not sure why, though.”
At her words, Wednesday looked out the window and let out a sigh, internally debating if the next words to come from her mouth were worth it.
“There’s a chance I’ll regret asking, but do you think… cuddling might make you feel better?” She said reluctantly, looking at Enid, then back at her bed.

Enid excitedly said yes and jumped out of the chair, leaving her undone homework forgotten on her desk.

They both lay on Wednesday’s bed, with the raven girl’s head on the pillow and Enid’s buried into the crook of her neck.

As they were both relishing in the warmth of the monochrome duvet, Wednesday interrupted the silence.

“You do know, if you decide not to tell me what’s bothering you, I’ll have to find out for myself, right?”

“I know. I’ll tell you tomorrow.” With that, Enid buried her head deeper into her girlfriend’s neck and passed out.

The day after, Enid was seated at a lunch table with Yoko and Divina.

On the other side of the patio, she spotted Pugsley and Eugene sitting on the grass floor, eating food that they definitely don’t serve in the cafeteria, and more importantly, cuddling together as they watched a video on Eugene’s phone.

“Okay, please tell me I’m not crazy, but do you guys think Pugsley and Eugene are dating?” She said in the general direction of the couple, not really sparing them a glance.

Divina, who had her head on Yoko’s shoulder, looked up from her phone to watch Enid, who wasn’t looking at them at all. “Pugsley? Isn’t that Wednesday’s brother?”

Enid finally tore her gaze away from the boys, looking at Divina. “Yeah, that’s him. What do you think about what I said?”

“Well, I don’t know who Eugene is, so I couldn’t really tell you, girl.” Yoko spoke up after a couple seconds of silence.

“What? Yes, you do; you sit behind him and Pugsley in history class.” Enid mumbled, her full attention elsewhere.

But when she looked back to where Pugsley and Eugene were, they had disappeared, the only evidence of their existence being the trays they left behind.

Yoko and Divina looked at each other with slightly furrowed brows, like they were trying to portray concern but not knowing how to.

“Whatever, I’ll ask Wednesday later; I had to tell her about it anyway.” Enid was about to get up from the table, with the objective of going to look for them, when Divina spoke up.

“Where is Wednesday anyway? I don’t think I’ve seen her at lunch since you guys started dating.”

Enid answered without giving much thought, while taking out a few papers and pens to write something down. “Wednesday’s out doing some creepy stuff in the forest with Agnes, I think? I didn’t ask questions.”

She tuned out the rest of the conversation, all while planning how to find more evidence to support her claim that she wasn’t crazy.

A few minutes later, she picked up her stuff and got up to leave. Yoko and Divina watched as she ran into a pole and kept walking in the direction of the dorms.

“Wait, isn’t that the direction of Caliban Hall? Her room is in Ophelia Hall.”

When the day finally came to an end, Pugsley and Eugene walked through the doorway of their dorm room, exhausted.

As soon as the doors closed, they both started listing their complaints of the day, such as homework, exams, and difficult teachers.

“I hate school. I’m going to bed.”

“...It’s only 5pm though?” Pugsley countered, while taking out the stuff from his bag and placing it on his desk. “And we have a lot of homework.”

Eugene let out an exasperated sigh and sat down on his bed. “I’ll do it tomorrow during the first free period. I’m exhausted.” He got up from the bed and walked to the bathroom door. “I’m gonna take a shower and then, like, watch TV or something. I don’t want to see anything school-related until tomorrow.”

Pugsley turned around to face him with an innocent smile as soon as he finished organizing his books on the table. “...Can I join?”

“No. Make your bed and do your homework if you love it so much.”

With that, Eugene entered the bathroom and locked the door.

2 hours later, when they had both showered and put on their pajamas, they were sitting in bed watching a movie.

“Hey, did you notice anything weird with Enid today?” Eugene suggested during an ads break in the movie.

“I’ve been seeing her more than usual these last 2 days, but other than that, everything is as weird as she normally is.” Pugsley said without taking his eyes off the screen.

“I just got the impression that she was looking at us more often lately; I don’t know why. But every time I look in her general direction, it’s like she’s trying to see into my soul with her eyes, with how intensely she’s looking at me.”

The movie ended about an hour later, and they both went out to get dinner at the cafeteria.

Eugene and Pugsley were walking down the hall, holding hands, when they spotted Enid sitting at a table with Wednesday.

“See, this is what I’m talking about; as soon as she saw us, she stopped talking and looked straight into our souls. It’s kinda creepy.” Eugene turned to whisper into Pugsley’s ear, dropping his hand.

Pugsley looked briefly at Enid and then at Eugene. “It is a little weird, but maybe she’s just trying to analyze me, since she started dating my sister not too long ago.”

Eugene turned to look at his boyfriend with an indistinguishable emotion on his face, then said nothing and guided them to a table for dinner.

After dinner, Enid left for her room, and Wednesday approached the table where the both of them sat.

“I assume you’ve noticed Enid’s strange behavior lately.” Wednesday sat down next to Pugsley, with one of her neutral expressions that still somehow reflected so much emotion.

Eugene spoke first. “Well, yes, I thought it was kind of weird? how she keeps staring at us for some reason. It might be nothing, though.”

“If it was nothing, Wednesday wouldn’t be here in the first place. What’s up with Enid?” Pugsley said, gathering his plates to wash later.

“Apparently, she saw you guys being… affectionate. So now she thinks you’re dating and is obsessed with confirming her theories. It’s eating at her head; she can’t even focus on her favorite things.”

Both of them looked confused at each other before turning their heads to speak to her. “How’s that a problem? Last time I checked, we are dating.”

Wednesday looked slightly surprised for a second before going back to her usual neutral expression. “I wasn’t aware of that. Congratulations, I suppose, but we still need to deal with Enid.”

Eugene spoke up first. “How are we supposed to do anything? It’s your girlfriend. If she wants to assume we’re dating, let her.”

Wednesday left the table without another word, leaving the two boys to wonder what was happening with Enid.

“Should we just go back to our room?” Pugsley suggested, and Eugene just nodded and followed him back to the dorms.

Later that night, Eugene and Pugsley were lying in bed, watching videos before going to sleep, when Pugsley spoke up. “You know what would be so funny?”

“What?” Eugene looked up at his boyfriend, seeing a half-smile on his face.

“My sister said Enid has been staying up late, making theories about us dating. I think it would be hilarious if we, like, fucked with her head.”

“I’m scared to ask how you plan to do that.”

Pugsley lifted his head from the pillow to get a better look at him. “I mean, if she’s constantly watching us to see if we hold hands or kiss or whatever, let’s give her little clues but then act like the most oblivious people on the planet. We could even get people into this; text it to the Caliban Hall group chat and stuff.”

“I doubt that would work. It’s not like we’re the most popular guys here; people wouldn’t listen to us. If anything, all you’re doing is announcing our relationship on the dorm group chat.”

“It’s not like it’s a secret or anything; people just don’t notice us. Also it would be really fucking funny to hear about her running around asking people who have no clue about anything and then see us holding hands or something.”

Eugene let out a tired sigh and adjusted himself on the pillow. “Fine, if it makes you happy. Let’s go to sleep; I’m tired.”

Pugsley wrapped his arms around his lover’s waist. “Do I at least get a good night’s kiss?”

“Are you only this annoying when I’m trying to sleep?” Eugene said playfully, leaning in to place a short kiss on Pugsley’s lips.

“Goodnight, Pugs.”

“Goodnight, Caro mio.”

Summary:

“Huh, there’s no one here.” She whispered this time, a volume vastly different from what she had been doing for the past 30 minutes.

Enid was about to return to the dorm when she heard a sound behind the shed.

Like the very smart teenager that she is, she immediately went around the wall of the shed to check out the sound.

“Oh my god.”

Her suspicions have been confirmed.

Chapter Text

Wednesday woke up that day to the sound of the rustling of papers and footsteps pacing around the room.

She opened her eyes slowly to find that where her girlfriend used to lie beside her, there was a suspiciously Enid-shaped empty space.

“Oh, Wednesday, you’re awake!” Enid stopped her pacing to look at Wednesday. She looked like she was 5 seconds from collapsing, and she had bags under her eyes.

“...Why are you awake?” Wednesday paused to look at the alarm clock. “It’s 4 am. Classes don’t start until 9.”

Enid had a look on her face that said that whatever Wednesday had said prompted a rant about one of her current obsessions. Wednesday could probably guess what it was this time.

“Okay, so you remember how I told you yesterday that I suspected that your brother might be in a relationship with Eugene, right? So I did some digging, online and whatnot, and I made up a plan to find out for real if they are dating or not. The plan does include talking to a lot of people, so I’m not sure if we’ll be able to eat lunch together today. I was thinking—”

Wednesday stopped listening at some point, more concerned about her girlfriend’s health than her brother’s relationship.

Enid kept on talking and talking, though her ramblings fell on deaf ears.

“Enid. How many hours did you sleep?”

“What? Uh, probably not that many? I was making this, on paper and with glitter. Now, as I was saying, do you think Ajax could tell me anything about them? I mean, their rooms are next to each other; if anyone would know anything, it’s him.” Enid kept on rambling until she was interrupted by Wednesday again.

“Enid. Go back to sleep. We can talk about this in the morning.”

“But—”

“No. Come over here, or go to your bed; I don’t care. But you are going to sleep until 7 am like a normal person. Come on.”

Enid looked at her and let out a defeated sigh. She then went over to Wednesday’s bed and flopped down next to her. “Fine, I’ll go to sleep. But you have to let me tell you the whole plan in the morning.”

“No, I don’t. Now sleep.” Wednesday wrapped her arms around Enid, ensuring that she wouldn’t escape again—and perhaps her own comfort for the night, but we don’t have to tell anyone that.

The morning after, In Pugsley and Eugene’s bedroom.

“Come on, Pugs, It’s 7:30 am; we’re going to be late if we don’t get up now.” Eugene said, struggling to get out of his boyfriend’s grip around him.

That only made Pugsley hug Eugene stronger, refusing to let go. “But it’s so nice here. I don’t want to go to class. Can’t we skip today? Please?”

“Pugs, I love you, but you do this every day, and we were already late to class yesterday because of you. Get your ass up.”

Pugsley smiled, remembering the morning of yesterday, when Ajax had to come knocking at their door because they missed half of the first period thanks to Pugsley.

He reluctantly let go of Eugene so they could get up and get dressed for class.

An hour later, they were both ready for class, just waiting in their bedrooms for the bell to ring, when Pugsley remembered the conversation they’d had the prior night.

“Hey, do you want to text the group chat about the Enid thing?”

Eugene looked up at his boyfriend with a confused and bewildered look on his face. “You were serious about that?”

Now Pugsley’s confused. “Well, yeah? Unless you don’t want to, then that’s totally fine. I just thought we agreed it would be funny to mess with her a little before the grand reveal.”

“I don’t want to know what you have planned for the grand reveal. I guess I don’t care if you text the group chat about it, but don’t go into a rant about how much you love me or whatever; just tell them to mess with Enid a little bit.”

Pugsley had a mischievous yet sweet smile on his face as he said, “How did you know I would do that?” Eugene rolled his eyes fondly at that. “What? I just want everyone to see how much I love you.”

Pugsley wrapped his arms around Eugene’s waist and started peppering kisses all over his neck.

Eugene chuckled. “Okay, come on, the bell’s about to ring, and you’re doing the same thing as yesterday. I’m starting to think you do it on purpose so we stay in here making out instead of going to class.”

“Damn, I almost got away with it.” Pugsley left one last long-lasting kiss on Eugene’s lips before taking his hand and guiding him to class, just as the bell rang.

Wednesday is filled with conflicting emotions.

For one, she’s concerned for her girlfriend’s health, both physical and mental. They all know that when Enid gets a new obsession, she won’t let it go until she knows the full story.

On the other hand, she’s extremely annoyed right now. As of the current time, they are sitting in one of the only classes they share, and Enid is not paying attention.

Instead, she’s trying to distract Wednesday by showing her the full PowerPoint presentation on how to find out if the two boys were actually dating.

She’ll give it to her; this takes dedication. Enid is explaining to her how she would get to different parts of the information she needs by talking to different people, who could lead her to discover different sides of their relationship.

Oh, right, she hasn’t explained yet.

Enid wants to know if they are dating, when they started dating, and how the confession went, among other very sappy things that she really has no business knowing.

“Enid. Stop meddling in my brother’s affairs and pay attention to class. I happen to know this isn’t exactly a class that you can pass without taking notes.”

That silenced Enid for a moment, and she closed her laptop with what appeared to be a disappointed look on her face. “Fine, I’ll stop interfering… for now.” She whispered the last part, in hopes that Wednesday wouldn’t hear her.

Even though she did hear her, Wednesday said nothing; as long as she starts paying attention for now, she supposes.

At lunch, Enid was missing.

Wednesday has to admit, she hasn’t really looked everywhere for her, but she isn’t in any of her usual lunch spots.

She’s not sitting at a lunch table with her pack or with Yoko and Divina. She also isn’t at the coffee shop ordering her disgusting rainbow drink, and more importantly, she isn’t standing by Wednesday’s side.

Agnes is, though, so that’s who’s helping her search the school for Enid’s whereabouts.

Okay, fine, so she was lying about not having looked everywhere for her, so what?

She sent Agnes to go look for her, while she stayed in their room, looking at all her glitter-covered plans to see who she might be talking to now.

After a few minutes of investigation, she concluded that Enid should be talking to Ajax right about now.

As Wednesday opened the door to go look for Enid and Ajax, Agnes materialized out of thin air right in front of her.

“Enid is speaking to Ajax in the common room of Caliban Hall.”

“I’m aware. I also came to that conclusion after looking at her step-by-step PowerPoint presentation.” As she was about to leave Agnes behind to keep walking, she paused. “Do you know what she’s asking him?”

“I’m afraid not. I just saw them from a distance to confirm her whereabouts, like you instructed me.” And with that, Agnes disappeared again, leaving Wednesday alone. Sort of.

Enid is getting tired of running around, and she still has no real proof of anything.

Seriously, it’s like everyone agreed to give vague and unhelpful answers on purpose. No one has given her even the slightest thread of hope to cling to.

The next person on her list of people to talk to is Ajax. No one has given her anything to work with so far, but surely Ajax is the one to give her something, right? His room is right next to Pugsley’s.

“Ajax! Can I talk to you for a second?” Enid waved at Ajax to signal him over as soon as she saw him.

Ajax looked at her with a weird expression, like she was the last person he wanted to talk to, but also like he expected to have this conversation.

“Hey Enid, what’s up?”

For the sake of not overthinking anything else, she ignored his expression and asked the question she was asking everyone else. “Well, I know you’re kind of close with Eugene and Pugsley. I noticed a few things, and I have a theory. Do you think you could be of any help?”

Ajax sighed, leaning on the pillar next to them. This was going to be a long, slightly uncomfortable conversation. “What’s your theory?”

“Well, I don’t mean to start any rumors, though I’ve talked to so many people I might’ve accidentally started one. Anyway, I’ve noticed that Pugsley and Eugene are, like, weirdly affectionate lately, and I think they might be together. Do you have anything helpful to give me? Please? I’ve talked to way too many people and have nothing to go off of.”

Even though he was warned a few hours ago, her bluntness still took Ajax by surprise. “Well, have you tried talking to them? If they’re being affectionate in public, they might not be keeping it a secret, so maybe they would tell you if you asked?”

Enid looked surprised at that suggestion but still insisted, “Right, thanks for the suggestion. On the chance that they don’t tell me anything, though, do you really have no information to give me? Your room is right next to theirs; if they’re really dating, surely you’ve… heard things.”

For some reason, that specific wording made Ajax remember an incident from a few weeks ago.

Ajax really needed to get that project done. One would think that being assigned to do a project with Eugene and Pugsley meant an easy A, but it’s nearly midnight, and he still hasn’t had an answer from either of them about what he sent to the group chat.

So, now, he’s outside the door of their room and has been knocking for at least 2 minutes.

To be fair, there’s some really loud music playing in there, so it’s possible they haven’t heard him.

He really needs to get that project done, though, so he slowly opened the door to their room.

The sight he found when he came in was one he definitely didn’t expect, but also one that explains a lot.

It was slightly dark, but you could still very much see inside. Sitting on Eugene’s bed was Pugsley. The thing is, Eugene was also sitting there. On top of Pugsley, he means.

They separated when they heard the door open, but it was very obvious what had just been happening, if the sight before him was of any help.

Eugene had been straddling Pugsley’s hips, half of his shirt unbuttoned, and both of their hairs were a mess. Their lips were connected by a string of saliva.

“Shit, I’m sorry. You guys weren’t answering the door, so I just came in? I’m so sorry.” With that, Ajax turned around and closed the door.

“—jax. Ajax? Are you okay? Why aren’t you saying anything?”

He was pulled out of his thoughts by Enid waving her hand in front of his face.

“Uh, yeah, sorry, what was the question?”

Enid looked a little annoyed, yet unsurprised. “Do you have anything helpful to say about them or not?”

Right. That’s what they were talking about. “I have nothing. You could ask Bianca, though. I think Eugene’s been going to the fencing club regularly, so maybe she’s seen something. Sorry I can’t be of any more help.”

With that, Ajax turned around and left before he could get into anything else.

“...Huh.”

Enid half-smiled, having her first helpful hint since she started this whole thing.

After a full day of boring classes, Pugsley and Eugene found themselves collapsing on the bed once again, exhausted.

Of course, nothing can ever let them have a few minutes of peaceful silence, so right in that moment, Eugene’s phone chimed with a notification from his messages app.

“Ajax texted me.” Eugene said, checking his phone.

“Yeah? What’d he say?”

He was silent for a moment, rereading the message a few times before speaking up again. “Enid already got to him. Apparently, no one’s given her anything useful yet.”

Pugsley laughed not-so-softly, burying his head on Eugene’s shoulder. “Okay, come on, you can’t tell me that’s not hilarious.”

Eugene smiled too, hugging Pugsley tighter to him. “It is kind of funny. It’s so weird that she’s asked so many people but still hasn’t gotten around to asking us. Surely she’s thought of that as, like, a last resort, right?”

“I wouldn’t put it past her to be so excited that she forgot she could ask the most important people in this whole discourse, and we’d probably tell her the truth.”

After that, they fell into a comfortable silence, just enjoying the other’s presence, until Eugene remembered something.

“Hey, get up. I have to go take care of the bees.” Eugene said, softly tapping Pugsley on the shoulder.

Pugsley stirred lightly, not quite asleep but not really awake either. “I thought you already took care of that. Or was that yesterday? Whatever. Can I come with?”

“Obviously, come on.” Eugene pulled them both out of bed, gathered their things, and led them out the door to the shed.

“Enid, I’m busy. I can’t spend my time giving you information about some random people’s lives.” Bianca was speaking and walking at the same time, barely sparing a glance at Enid, who was following her around the club like a lost puppy.

“Please? You just have to tell me one thing, and I’ll leave you alone, I promise!”

Okay, to be fair, Enid is running out of people to ask, and her last resort would be to send Thing to spy on them, but that doesn’t seem very fair. She’s getting desperate, and no one has given her any clear answer or hint.

Bianca stopped in her tracks, took a deep breath, and turned around to face Enid. “Fine. What do you need?”

“I need to know about Eugene and Pugsley. Someone told me that Eugene has been coming to the fencing club more often, and I want to know if you’ve seen Pugsley with him and if you’ve seen any, like, flirty behavior? I think they’re dating.”

Bianca looked at her like she was holding back from telling her to fuck right off and instead said, “Are you seriously that desperate in knowing that you’re asking me? Of all people?” Bianca waited for a few seconds before continuing to talk. “If you really want to know that bad, why don’t you just ask them? They would probably tell you.”

“You’re the second person to tell me that today. Do you really think they would tell me if they were dating?”

Bianca wonders how Enid is still alive if this is her thought process. Wednesday is probably the answer. “Yes, I think they would probably tell you the truth. Now, go look for them and leave me alone, please.”

“Alright, fine, but where would I even find them? I think they’ve been avoiding me, because I used to see them all the time, and now I haven’t seen them in almost two days.”

“I don’t know. Try the shed where they keep their bees, or maybe their room? Just go.”

Enid’s face lit up like she just had the most genius idea to ever exist. “Oh.my.god. The shed! How did I not think of that before? Thanks, Bianca!”

With that, Enid sprinted to the entrance of the school, finally leaving Bianca to her own devices.

The forest was usually a quiet place. A place to relax. Listening to the sounds of birds, bugs, and the occasional rain could calm down even the most anxious of people.

Today, that wasn’t the case.

Enid is currently running through the forest, trying to find the shed that she swears used to be here. Or so she thought. The last 5 times.

She’s being very loud.

At some point, after running in circles around the unfamiliar forest, she found the shed where Eugene kept his bugs.

The place was suspiciously quiet, so Enid thought it would be empty. Just in case, though, she opened the door to the shed.

Chapter 3: Starry eyes sparking up my darkest night

Summary:

“Why did you invite me over anyway? Your parents don’t know about us, and I know you like my house better than yours.”

He saw Pugsley’s eyes light up with excitement as he recalled what he wanted to do in the first place.

“I wanted to introduce you to my family properly. As my boyfriend. Not if you don’t want to, of course, but you’ve never been to my house, and I thought I could spend time with you here and also introduce you to my parents?”

Eugene’s nervous expression softened at that, and he approached Pugsley. “Of course I want to. I’m just… I don’t know, but I have a feeling that Wednesday invited Enid over for the same reason. I wouldn’t want to overshadow them.”

Pugsley laughed. “Don’t worry. We could never overshadow my sister, as sad as that is. I just hope she gets the hint and introduces Enid another day. We have plenty of time.”

Notes:

This is the last chapter finally!

This took me so long to write because my teachers hate me and also Alice In Borderland season 3 came out a few days ago so I HAD to watch it.

Also I hit a massive writers block at the start because I didn't know how I wanted the chapter to go.

I hope you enjoyed the story, and thank you to all the comments and support, they helped motivate me.

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

Eugene is sure this is the grand reveal Pugsley had planned.

It makes all the sense in the world, really. Why else would he insist that they stop what they’re doing and instead go make out behind the shed, in plain sight, where anyone passing by can see them?

It’s not like that took a lot of convincing on his part, but that’s not important.

Maybe he knew that Enid would go to the shed at that exact moment and see them. Or maybe it was just a coincidence.

Whatever. That doesn’t matter anymore, does it?

“Oh my god.”

The moment they both heard that voice, Eugene immediately pushed his boyfriend away, just to open his eyes and find Enid standing there, staring.

“Uhm. Sorry. I just wanted to ask you guys a question? But I guess I don’t have to anymore. I mean… I have my answer.” Enid said awkwardly, not being able to maintain eye contact.

Eugene shifted awkwardly on his feet while thinking of what to say to her when he caught something on his periphery.

Pugsley was smiling.

“Uh— Enid. What are you doing here?” He swears he’s never been more embarrassed in his life than he is at this moment.

Enid’s face turned an impossible shade of red. “Well, uh, I wanted to ask you if you were, like, dating? Because a few days ago I started thinking a little bit, and—you know what? It’s a long story. It doesn’t matter.”

He looked at Pugsley for help, only to find him still smiling, something almost akin to a smirk. Then he decided to speak. “We are dating, yes.”

“Well, I gathered that from the whole… display.” Enid pointed at the both of them. “I guess I’ve been at this for so long I forgot that I could just… ask.”

At that moment, Enid’s phone chimed.

Thank God.

“...Right. I’m going to leave now. Thanks for… answering the question, I guess. Bye!” Enid said quickly, then left running right back to where she came from.

Eugene and Pugsley were left alone again. It’s really irritating him that Pugsley is still fucking smiling.

“Why are you still smiling? Did you know this was going to happen?” Pugsley’s smirk only grew wider at his words.

“Maybe. I may or may not have been notified beforehand that she was heading over here. And that might be why I made you stop caring for the bees. Everything hypothetically, though.”

The worst part is, even though it’s irritating, it definitely sounds like something he would do.

“Oh my god. You definitely knew. Now you gotta tell me how you did that.” Eugene took his hand and guided him inside the shed again so they could continue with what they came here for in the first place.

“You know, Agnes is really useful sometimes. I had her text me when she saw the gears turning inside Enid’s head, and I received a text that she was coming over to the shed just coincidentally when we were here. So, I convinced you to stop what you were doing. Not like you were really hard to persuade, anyway.

Eugene’s face reddened, and he turned away, ignoring the laughs from his very amused boyfriend. “Shut up and get to work. This is all your fault.”

Literally 15 minutes later, they were done with everything that had to be done before the weekend and were packing up their things.

“That didn’t take very long. And we still have about two hours before we need to leave the school. What do you want to do?”

Pugsley glanced at him with a look that he knew all too well. And God, those eyes. “Do you want to continue what we were doing before we were rudely interrupted by Enid?”

Eugene is a weak, weak man.

Wednesday got back to the room about half an hour before they had to be picked up to go home for the long weekend.

As she got in, she found Enid lying on her bed, looking a mix of sad, embarrassed, and also joyful at the same time? How her girlfriend's emotions work, she’ll never understand.

“Enid, is something wrong?” Wednesday approached her bed cautiously.

Enid looked up at her, the same pitiful mix of emotions on her face, though lessened, as if she made an attempt to hide it. “No. How long until Lurch picks us up? I want to get out of here and never see anyone in here ever again.”

Wednesday watched as she let out a whine and put her hands over her eyes, still not saying anything about her problems. Maybe it would be best to discuss it later.

“In about half an hour, I trust you got everything you may need for a 4-day stay at my home?”

“Yeah! I’m actually so excited about properly meeting your parents as your girlfriend for the first time. I made sure to get everything we need for the sleepover, too.” For the first time since she first entered the room, Enid looked actually excited about something. She’ll take it as a sign that whatever she had was not that serious.

“Alright. I’ll go warn Pugsley and Eugene that Lurch is coming to pick us up soon. I’ll see you by then.” Wednesday was about to leave a quick kiss on her forehead when Enid suddenly stopped her, confused.

“Wait, what do you mean, Eugene? Is he coming with us too?”

Wednesday looked puzzled for a split second before going back to her neutral expression and replying, “Well, yes? For some reason, Pugsley invited him over to our home for the long weekend as well.” With that, she got up and left the dorm.

Fuck. This is going to be an awkward weekend.

When Wednesday got to Caliban Hall to look for her brother, she found Ajax in the entrance, with a clipboard, for some reason.

“Hey, Wednesday. Are you going in to get Pugsley?” Ajax said, ready to write something down on the paper.

“Yes. Why are you writing that down on a clipboard?”

Ajax put down the paper after writing something short and said, “I have to register everyone that’s coming in and out of Caliban Hall to make sure everyone is out by 5.” Ajax looked weirdly at her before continuing, “I also have to accompany you to the door to see where you go.”

Wednesday looked past him at the door where her brother and his boyfriend stayed and walked right past Ajax. “That won’t be necessary. This will only take a minute.”

Ajax followed closely behind her. “I know, but it’s the rules. Sorry.”

He knocked on the door for her. Once, twice, three times. No answer.

After a minute, they heard hurried footsteps approaching the door, and the door swung open to reveal Pugsley.

Pugsley, whose hair was ruffled, clothes were out of place, and lips were slightly swollen. It really doesn’t take a genius to figure out what was happening before they knocked on the door.

Ajax took one look at him and decided he’d had enough of that in the past few weeks. He turned around and got back to guarding the entrance.

“Wednesday, hey! Uh—what are you doing here?” He looked nervous and kept glancing back into the room. If you really paid attention, you could barely hear the sound of clothes rustling.

Wednesday ignored it and instead decided to deliver the news. “Lurch is coming to pick us all up in twenty-five minutes. Finish your romantic endeavors, get dressed properly, and be at the door within that time. We’ll leave without you both if you’re not there.”

With that, she turned around, leaving behind a baffled Pugsley and an even more surprised, more wrecked Eugene, who had appeared right behind him.

“I guess we have to get dressed.” He took Eugene's hand and guided him back into the room, locking the door behind them.

The car ride to their house was uncomfortable.

Eugene and Pugsley were seated together in front of Wednesday and Enid in the car, the four of them looking uncomfortable for different reasons.

When they all arrived at the mansion, Pugsley pulled Eugene straight to his room, while Wednesday and Enid stayed behind to talk with her parents.

“I didn’t know Enid would be here too, I swear.” Pugsley said as the door to his room closed behind them.

“It's fine, Pugs. It’s just going to be a little uncomfortable for a few days. We’ll be fine.” Eugene paused.

They both smiled dumbly. Pugsley took Eugene’s hand and guided him to his private bathroom. “Let’s shower before dinner starts. I’m so tired of running around today; I really need to sleep.”

About an hour later, Wednesday came knocking at their door, ready to tell them that dinner was almost ready.

But before she could knock, she heard a noise.

Maybe it was evil of her, but she decided to let Enid go get them.

When Enid got there, she knocked twice, then came in without waiting for an answer.

No one knows who taught her survival instincts, because she’s the only one in the whole entire planet who would barge into a teenage boy’s room unannounced with the knowledge that that teenage boy was in there with his boyfriend.

Anyway, we all know what she saw when she got there. Enid quickly eyed the scene, then got out of the room, choosing to yell from the hallway instead. “Guys, dinner is ready! Please get dressed and come down to the kitchen.”

She left quickly the same way she came, leaving them alone—plus Wednesday, who was watching from a corner how the whole scene unfolded.

In the room, Eugene and Pugsley were left frozen for a second, then quickly untangled from each other to get dressed.

“Seriously, why is it that we always get interrupted? It’s not fair.” Eugene huffed, annoyed, while waiting for Pugsley to get dressed.

“Maybe it’s because we’re always making out. And also Enid has no sense of boundaries. Who the fuck enters a room without knocking, anyway?” Pugsley had a smug half-grin on his face, but Eugene could tell he was also upset about the interruption.

“Let’s just go.” Pugsley nodded, then took Eugene’s hand in his and guided them to the door. Before he could open it, he paused and turned to look at his boyfriend, unsure.

“Are you sure you’re okay with telling my parents? We don’t have to if you don’t want to.”

Eugene looked up softly at him, then opened the door. “I’m more than okay with it. Let’s go tell them; come on.”

Dinner was surprisingly nice. While the Addamses got their own weird food, they actually made an effort to cook something edible for Eugene and Enid.

So maybe mac n’ cheese wasn’t the best food in the world, but it was definitely better than whatever dead animal was in Pugsley’s food this time.

In a short break from the storytelling their parents tormented them with at every dinner, they asked something that gave Pugsley the perfect chance to introduce Eugene as his lover.

“So, do you kids have anything to tell us? We’d love to hear what you guys get up to at school.” Morticia asked.

Wednesday looked at the both of them with a questioning eyebrow raise, as if wondering who was going to get the spotlight tonight.

They came to a silent agreement, and Pugsley spoke first. “Actually, I have something to announce.”

Morticia eyed the two boys suspiciously, like she had a feeling what they were about to announce.

“I’m dating Eugene. We’ve been together for 2 months.”

“Two months? Boys, that’s wonderful! How come we never knew of this before?” Morticia said excitedly, while her husband smiled almost as happily as her.

That sent a proud smile to Pugsley’s face, and he looked at Enid, who was apparently trying to melt into her chair from embarrassment.

“I guess we were just that good at hiding it. Not even Wednesday knew.”

Despite all the mockery that they all suffered throughout the rest of the dinner, Wednesday stayed silent the whole time, then took Enid’s hand and guided her upstairs without a word.

Enid was secretly grateful about getting out of there, so she followed closely behind until the Addamses were out of sight.

“Hey, I thought you were going to introduce me officially to your parents as your girlfriend tonight? I mean, I know Pugsley also introduced Eugene, but I’m confused as to why you didn’t do it too.” Enid said once they walked into the room for the night, locking the door behind them.

“Pugsley and I came to an agreement that I wouldn’t steal the spotlight from him and his boyfriend for tonight. We can make the announcement tomorrow at dinner.” Wednesday started her nightly routine while talking, not giving it much importance.

Enid looks confused now. “Why would we be stealing the spotlight from them? If anything, our announcement would just be confirmation of something they already suspected; theirs is a completely new thing that no one knew.”

This time, Wednesday turned to her. “Enid. By now you should already know that, though unwanted and rejected, I have my parents’ favoritism for essentially everything. If we were to announce our relationship right after my brother, all the attention would turn to me, and my parents would forget about them.”

Wednesday then turned away and continued what she was doing. “I wanted to give them one night with the full attention on themselves, before my parents inevitably forget about him again. It’s sad, really, how hard he tries.”

Enid stayed silent through their whole night routine, thinking about everything that had happened today. It was certainly an eventful one.

Later that night, when they were both lying in bed, the questions started to bother her. Naturally, she bothered Wednesday with them too.

“How did we not know about this? I mean, my investigation lasted days, and I was only able to confirm it because I… Well, I’ve told you how it happened. But otherwise, I probably would’ve never known!”

She nuzzled deeper into her girlfriend’s neck, trying to keep the memories from earlier in the day from resurfacing because, ew.

At Wednesday’s silence, she started thinking again. “...How did you take the news? I know you’re not homophobic because of the obvious, but you were silent the whole time. Are you okay?”

“The announcement was not news to me. I had already internalized it a few days ago. I’m okay. Let’s go to sleep now, love.”

Enid was happy to obey, as she was also very tired from the long day, until she realized.

“Wait, you knew the whole time?”

When Eugene and Pugsley finally finished washing dishes and were pretty sure that his parents weren’t going to ask any more questions, they tried to walk away subtly, only to be interrupted by Morticia.

“Where do you think you’re going? We still have to establish rules, now that we know about you two.”

Fuck. This was the one thing he was worried about when telling his parents.

At the disappointed and tired expressions on their faces, Morticia cracked a smile and Gomez laughed. “Relax, we’re kidding. You two can do whatever you want under our roof. Just do so as quietly as you can. You’ve never heard your father and I doing anything, have you?”

They looked at each other with surprised yet embarrassed looks, and were about to leave for their room, when Gomez spoke, “Now come sit on the couch, we want to hear everything about this… peculiar relationship”

Almost escaped. Fuck.

They both had to sit down again. This was going to be a long interrogation.

Eugene and Pugsley had finally managed to escape Morticia and Gomez’s attention, and their never ending questions. As soon as they stopped talking, they both bolted upstairs without so much as a goodnight.

“I understand why Wednesday doesn’t like their attention now.” Pugsley said, closing the door behind them. “What do you want to do now?” When he turned around though, Eugene closed the distance between them.

The kiss was electric. Literally. One of Eugene’s favorite facts about Pugsley to this day is how little sparks fly out of his hands when he’s excited or taken by surprise.

When they separated, Pugsley was wide-eyed and had a small smile on his face. “Why this all of a sudden?” Not like he was complaining though.

“We’ve been interrupted three times today. I deserve this. Lock the door.”

“Okay” Pugsley said, breathless. He locked the door and got them both to the bed.

llllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll

After a while, they collapsed on the bed, exhausted.

“We might need to shower again.” Pugsley said, chuckling, looking at the mess they made.

Eugene mumbled something along the lines of “Shut up” and nuzzled into his boyfriend’s neck. He was so tired.

“I think the Enid investigation didn’t turn out to be so bad, right?” Pugsley said, admiring the way Eugene sank into his arms, looking like he wanted to disappear into the bed.

Eugene let a smile spread across his face. “I’m pretty content right now, yeah. Let’s go to sleep now, I’m exhausted.”

Pugsley full-on laughed this time. “I think I could guess why that is.”

“Shut up. Let’s go to sleep.” Eugene lightly hit him in the arm, playing.

“Okay, okay. Goodnight, Mi amor.”

“Goodnight, Pugs.”

Notes:

Y'all I cannot write smut for the life of me I swear. I'll be able to one day but that day is not today. Also reminder that they're seventeen and that teenagers kiss and have sex and that's fine.

I got a little too serious with the favoritism of Gomez and Morticia towards Wednesday at the end. Oops.

I was thinking of writing a sequel for this where I recount everything that happened in the four days they were in the mansion. Don't take my word for it though because I might not write it at all.

Anyway I hope you liked this ily bye
