Piggyback

Summary:

Asriel and Kris’ morning routine.

Work Text:

The alarm rang for just under 10 seconds before Asriel shut it off. He sat up, yawned, stretched, and got out of bed.

Asriel crossed the room to the other bed. The lump that was his younger sibling remained motionless.

He poked them. “Kris. C’mon, time to get up for school.” They only curled up tighter.

Asriel sighed and ripped away the blankets. Kris hissed at him as he lifted them from the bed. Asriel righted Kris’ horn headband after it came loose. Ever since they’d gotten it, Asriel could count the times he’d seen them without it on one hand. He was sure it must be uncomfortable for Kris to wear in bed, but they were resolute.

Speaking of wearing unusual things in bed, Kris was already dressed for the day. Or rather, they hadn’t changed last night. Evidently, they’d gotten used to this little routine.

Knowing Kris wouldn’t go on their own, Asriel dragged them by the hand downstairs. Luckily, Kris came alive at the sight of their favourite cereal. They poured themselves a huge bowl, which probably wasn’t healthy for them. Especially given all the sugar and chocolate flavouring. Well, Asriel wasn’t going to scold them. That was Mom’s job. Of course, she wasn’t there that morning, already at the school preparing for the day.

As Kris dived into their breakfast, Asriel had a more modest bowl of a healthier alternative. One that Kris often called old people food. It was their loss, as far as Asriel was concerned.

Asriel had enough time to finish his oats, rinse his bowl, go upstairs to get dressed for the day, and come back down before Kris finished eating. Once they had, Asriel pulled them into the bathroom.

Kris made a show of squeezing out a tiny bit of toothpaste, slowly raising the brush to their mouth, and brushing at a snail’s pace. Asriel was certain they did it just to annoy him, but getting Kris to take oral hygiene seriously was an uphill battle. As soon as Asriel finished, Kris gave up their show.

The siblings left the house. Asriel locked up, then turned to Kris. “I don’t suppose you feel like walking today?”

Kris shook their head.

Asriel sighed fondly, and crouched down. Instantly, Kris clambered onto his back and looped their arms around his neck. Asriel stood up, grunting as he accommodated the extra weight.

The two set off for school. Kris smiled as they heard Asriel chatting with the people they passed in town, especially those that commented on their strange position.

Kris knew full well that soon enough they’d reach the school, and they’d have to wake up for the day ahead. However, as they felt the rocking motions of Asriel’s steps, they couldn’t help but fall back asleep.
