Chapter Text

WARNING! INTRUDERS SPOTTED IN THE PREMISES!

Alarms blared as waves of Badniks mobilized towards the front of the base.

Eggman was on his Egg Mobile, with Orbot, Cubot, and Metal Sonic trailing behind. The blast doors opened to his carrier, revealing the Egg Dragoon looking over them. Heading towards the console, Eggman quickly jumped off the Egg Mobile and frantically started typing away.

"What is going on out there?!" He shouted as explosions roared in the background, "Who dares to break in here?!"

Accessing the cameras, Eggman saw a group of jackals fighting through his forces. But they weren't just destroying his machines. They were also collecting parts. When they ran into a computer, they connected flash drives into them, downloading any information on them.

"Why those little-! They think they can just walk in here and steal my technology?! I'll show them!"

Eggman furiously began to type on the console, different tabs opening and closing.

"Uh boss," Orbot says, "Shouldn't we be getting out of here? Those jackals will be here any minute!"

"Don't worry, we're leaving. I just want to leave them with a parting gift." Eggman replies as he finds what he was looking for.

The screen flashes red as the console asks for a final confirmation to begin the self-destruct sequence.

"B-boss, isn't that a bit much?!" Cubot asks in a panic.

"Oh calm down. I can always make another base. Besides, it'll make sure those jackals won't get anything useful after this."

With a push of a button, a new alarm sounded, with a red siren illuminating the hangar.

SELF-DESTRUCT SEQUENCE INITIALIZED. THIS FACILITY WILL SELF-DESTRUCT IN FIVE MINUTES.

"Orbot, Cubot, open the door and then get on the Dragoon," Eggman commanded as he got back on the Egg Mobile, "Metal..."

Eggman pulled out the red Chaos Emerald from his back pocket and tossed it to Metal Sonic.

"Don't let those jackals take the emerald. I'll contact you once we're out of here."

Metal Sonic nodded as the large overhead doors on the began to open.

THIS FACILITY WILL SELF-DESTRUCT IN FOUR MINUTES.

Metal Sonic was about to blast off when suddenly, a red sword impaled him behind.

"What?!" Eggman shouted, panic rising in his voice.

He managed to stay on one knee, still holding the Chaos Emerald.

"Going somewhere, doctor?" A voice said.

Standing at the entrance of the hangar was Jackal Squad. One of them started to walk towards Metal Sonic, who had managed to get back on his feet.

"Grr, you damn jackals!!" Eggman snapped as he began to fire rockets at the squad. They all scattered as they dodged the rockets.

"Metal, are you okay? Can you still fly?" Eggman asks.

Metal Sonic gives a thumbs up as he grabs the sword and shatters it, before pulling the sword from his back, sparks flying out the impact zone.

"Good, now get out of here! I'll hold these jackals off!"

Metal nodded as he prepared to take off, his thrusters stuttering for bit before fully powering up.

"Oh no you don't!" Quatre shouted as he lunged at Metal, but Metal manages to catch him by the neck and toss him aside. Metal finally takes off before another jackal could get to him, flying out the base and out of view.

THIS FACILITY WILL SELF-DESTRUCT IN THREE MINUTES.

"Well there goes the Chaos Emerald...and my sword..." The first jackal says, picking up what was left of his sword.

"So what now, Captain?" Trois asks.

"Now you disappear," Eggman called out as the Egg Dragoon started coming to life, "I will commend you all for coming this far, though, but this ends here."

Jackal Squad quickly dispersed again as Eggman started firing at them. His drill becomes electrified as he aileron rolls towards the jackals. They narrowly dodge him as the Dragoon violently slams into the hangar wall.

"Ow...I think I'm gonna be sick..." Cubot groans.

"You know we can't get sick, right?" Orbot points out.

"Well if the boss keeps driving like this-"

"Will you two be quiet!?" Eggman shouts, visibly frustrated.

THIS FACILITY WILL SELF-DESTRUCT IN TWO MINUTES.

"Captain Zero, we got to get out of here before the place blows!" Une says, looking panicked.

"No! We can't let the doctor survive!" Zero snapped back, "Trois, you and Une get everything we've collected out of here! Quatre & Deux, you're with me, now break!"

Jackal Squad split off as Une and Trois headed to the hangar door, where they had left backpacks full of parts. Zero, Deux, and Quatre meanwhile made a dash towards Eggman.

"These pesky jackals..! Orbot, Cubot, man the bottom cockpit! I want them blasted into smithereens!"

The two boys gave a salute as they descended into the cockpit at the feet of the Dragoon. Once there, they started firing at the jackals as Eggman swung the drill. After a bit, he thrusted the drill to the ground, narrowly missing them as they used it to climb on to the Dragoon.

"What?! Get off!!!" Eggman screamed as he violently shook the Dragoon around. Deux and Quatre jumped to the torso of the mech as Zero climbed the arm towards the main cockpit.

"I said GET OFF!!!" Eggman shouted again, charging the Dragoon into the wall in an attempt to crush Zero. He manages to dodge by jumping closer to the cockpit as the Dragoon slams into the wall, severely damaging its arm and disorienting Eggman.

Once Eggman gets his bearings, he sees Zero right in front of him with an evil grin on his face.

"Hello doctor."

"You annoying rodent! GET OFF MY MECH!!!" Eggman commanded as he thrusted the Dragoon headfirst into the wall again. Zero and the other jackals jumped off the Dragoon as it crashed into the wall, and then tumbling down to the ground as smoke began to come out the mech.

THIS FACILITY WILL SELF-DESTRUCT IN ONE MINUTE.

"Did you get them?" Zero asks Deux and Quatre. They both lift up the heads of Orbot and Cubot, with sparks flying out of them.

"Good. Now let's get out of here."

As Eggman gets his bearings, he spots the jackals teleporting away with Orbot and Cubot's heads.

"Why those little-"

THIS FACILITY WILL SELF-DESTRUCT IN THIRTY SECONDS.

"D-damn it!"

Eggman frantically pressed the controls of the Dragoon as he tried to leave the base. With the damage it sustained, he was having a hard time trying to get through the hangar door overhead.

"Come on! Work you damn machine!"

SELF-DESTRUCTION IMMINENT. THIS FACILITY WILL SELF-DESTRUCT IN FIVE...

Eggman managed to keep the Dragoon steady enough.

FOUR...

Eggman started to fly towards the hangar door.

THREE...

"Come on, come on!"

TWO...

The Dragoon was starting to go through the door.

ONE...

"...okay, just need to calibrate this and... Done!" Tails announces to himself, stepping back to gaze at his accomplishment.

Emerl stood at a pedestal that Tails made just for him. He stared blankly at Tails as its eyes were darkened and dead.

"Almost there, buddy. You'll be back in no time." Tails say to Emerl, a somber smile in his face as he reminisces when Emerl was alive and well.

The ancient weapon Gizoid, who Sonic had dubbed 'Emerl', had been friends with everyone, even calling Amy his mom. The memory of Emerl self-destructing kept playing on Tails' head as he admired Emerl's rebuilt body.

"Looks like you did it again, huh?" A familiar voice says as Tails turns around to see his spiked friend.

"Sonic!" Tails says in joy. "He's ready to go! Did you get it?"

"As if I'd forget it." Sonic scoffs, taking out a Chaos Shard, what remained of the original Emerl before.

"Alright! This might actually work!" Tails says, jumping in joy. Sonic laughs at his excitement.

"Geez, I get it..." Sonic chuckles as hands the shard to Tails.

Tails approaches Emerl and moves the Chaos Shard towards the robot. In an instant, the shard disappeared as it was absorbed by Emerl's body.

There was silence for a moment.

"You sure he will remember us?" Sonic asks.

"Um, I hope so... That emerald shard was the only thing left of him, so I don't really know if it'll work." Tails replies.

"Let's hope it works."

Suddenly, mechanical whirling his heard as Emerl's eyes started to light up.

The Gizoid was waking up.

"Come on...come on..." Tails pleased as Emerl's eyes fully lit up.

Sonic and Tails stayed silent for a moment.

"Is something supposed to happen?" Sonic asks.

"That should've done it..." Tails says, moving towards Emerl and beginning to inspect him.

"Maybe I gotta reinstate the Link with him?"

"No that isn't it, Emerl would've announced it. I'm going to run some diagnostics on him."

Tails grabbed his tablet and connected it to Emerl.

"Hm...there doesn't seem to be anything wrong. So why isn't he responsive?" Tails says.

"If the shard was a full emerald, it probably wake him up." Sonic replies.

"Wait...didn't Emerl already have a Chaos Emerald when you found him before?"

"Come to think of it, I think he did. Do you think he needs a Chaos Emerald?"

"It's worth a try. Now the question is where do we get one of the emeralds..."

"I think I remember Sally having one."

"At least it's not far..."

Just as Tails was disconnecting his tablet from Emerl, an alarm started to ring.

"Huh? A breaking news story? That's weird, I don't get those unless it's..."

Tails trailed off as his eyes widened in horror. Sonic quickly noticed his expression.

"What's wrong, Tails?" He asked, turning to look at his tablet.

Explosion in Mystic Jungle. Rumored to be one of Dr. Eggman's bases.

"Something tells me..." Sonic began, "That we need to hurry..."

Knuckles was in Angel Island, guarding the Master Emerald as usual.

"...ckles! Knuckles!" A voice called out behind him as Knuckles stood up and began to look around.

"Wha-? Silver?!" Knuckles asks as Silver descended from the and onto the ground, "What are you doing here? Aren't you supposed to be protecting your future or something?"

"I mean, we're starting to rebuild, but that's not what I'm here for!" Silver replies, with a panicked expression.

"Well I got nothing better to do. So what's up?"

"I had a weird vision... I think the world is going to be destroyed!"

"No offense, but isn't that how it is for you already?"

"This is serious, Knuckles! The entire planet gets obliterated, nothing survives!"

Knuckles expression darkens, "That does sound bad..."

"Not only that, but I kept seeing some sort of symbol. A logo of some kind, it had a 'G' on it..."

Knuckles' eyes widen.

"A 'G' on it, you say?"

"Wait, do you know it?!"

"The only symbol with a 'G' is the government group Rouge and Shadow work for, G.U.N."

"G.U.N...I think I remember hearing about it in the future..."

"Maybe they're still around in your time?"

"No, that can't be. I would've- LOOK OUT!!!"

Silver quickly got in front of Knuckles as he diverted something using his telekinesis. An explosion boomed beside the altar as a group of helicopters approached them and began to hover above them. Ropes flew down from the helicopters as humans and Mobians came down in black military gear. Each one has the G.U.N. insignia on their uniforms.

"Both of you, hands up!" The G.U.N. agents called out as they surrounded Silver and Knuckles, guns raised towards them 

"I guess your vision was right." Knuckles said as he raised his fists defensively.

"I guess so..." Silver replied, his hands gaining a cyan aura.

"Step away from the Master Emerald with your hands up!" One of the G.U.N. agents shouted, their fingers on the trigger.

"The new G.U.N. is already making a bad impression, and it hasn't even been a month yet." Knuckles said, chuckling.

"Wait, they have a new commander? I'm so confused!" Silver groaned.

"Enough! Hand over the Emerald or we'll fire!" Another agent screamed.

Silver and Knuckles shared a glance, with Knuckles giving Silver a reassuring nod. Silver nodded in return as he quickly created a forcefield around them and the Master Emerald. The G.U.N. agents began to shoot at them, as the helicopters began to fire rockets.

"I won't be able to hold this for long, so if you have a plan, now's the time!" Silver called out to Knuckles, who had begun to approach the Master Emerald.

"Don't worry, I have the perfect plan." Knuckles said, smirking. Silver turned his head to towards Knuckles as he climbed on top of the Master Emerald, and began to stretch his arm.

"Wait... don't tell me you're-"

"Brace yourself!"

Without hesitation, Knuckles punches the Master Emerald as a burst of energy came out of it. It shattered into pieces as Silver and the G.U.N. agents were knocked back. Some of the helicopters began to lose control as Silver manages to compose himself and look at Knuckles, who was gathering up the shards of the Master Emerald.

"What did you do, Knuckles?!" Silver shouted in a panic.

"I'll fix it later, now come on, the Island is gonna begin to fall!"

Knuckles grabbed all the pieces of the Master Emerald and began to run away from the altar, just as the ground began to shake, as if the island was beginning to lose its balance. Silver begins to follow Knuckles as the G.U.N soldiers finally recover from the initial shock and give chase.

"What's the plan now?" Silvers asks Knuckles as they traverse the island's forest.

"That depends, can you cover me?" Knuckles replies.

Silver looks around them. The sounds of the G.U.N agents were few and far between, and the helicopters were nowhere in sight. Eventually, they stop as Silver creates a force field around them again.

"Please hurry." Silver says, nervously looking around.

"On it." Knuckles replies, placing the Emerald shards on the ground.

Knuckles moved his hands over the Emerald, closing his eyes and beginning to concentrate. The shards began to glow as bolts of energy appear around Knuckles' hands. The shards get engulfed in the bolts of energy, starting to float in place. And in a flash of light, the Master Emerald was whole again.

"Okay, it's done. Give me your hand."

Silver dropped the forcefield, and just as he was about to grab Knuckles' hand, an explosion boomed beside them, knocking them away. G.U.N agents swarmed around them as helicopters roared overhead. Silver and Knuckles got back on their feet, with the Emerald being undamaged and by their side.

"Last warning! Hand over the Emerald now!" The G.U.N agents screamed.

Knuckles quickly grabs Silver's hand.

"Not a chance," He says, turning to the Emerald, "Master Emerald, teleport us to Tails' lab!"

As they were being engulfed in light, they managed to hear the agents shout "OPEN FIRE!"

Silver and Knuckles appeared in from of Tails' lab, still shocked at what had just happened.

"That was too close..." Silver says, panting.

"At least we got the Master Emerald out of there." Knuckles says, inspecting the Emerald for any damage.

"I didn't know you could put it back together if it broke."

"Honestly, I almost forgot I could. I only remember doing it a handful of times before now."

Knuckles grabs the Emerald and hoists it onto his shoulder.

"Let's hope Tails is here..." He says as he starts walking towards the entrance to Tails' lab.

The lad was eerily quiet, with only the hums of machinery and the glow of Tails' devices.

"Tails! Tails, are you here?" Knuckles called out, but nobody responded.

"Guess he's not here..." Silver says, looking around the room.

Knuckles gently places the Emerald on the ground.

"Great, now what?" He says, crossing his arms in frustration.

"Hey, look at this." Silver calls out. He was over at a workbench, which was filled with what seemed like blueprints and Tails' tablet in the middle.

"He must've been working on something. Looks like a robot." Silver says, grabbing one of the blueprints.

"I know we shouldn't be snooping, but..." Knuckles says, walking up to Silver as he motions the blueprints towards him. Suddenly, Knuckles' eyes widen in shock.

"That can't be..." Knuckles mumbles, swiping the blueprints from Silver, "This is...this looks like blueprints to Emerl..."

"Who's Emerl?" Silver asks, but Knuckles says silent. He places the page back on the workbench, and grabs another one, a somber expression on his face.

Suddenly, Tails' tablet began to ring. Knuckles walks towards it and grabs it, answering the call.

"Tails, Angel Isla... Knuckles?! And...Silver? What are you two doing there!?" Amy's frantic voice rang out.

"We came here looking for Tails, but he didn't here." Knuckles replied, "I'm assuming you were going to tell him that the Island fell?"

"Yeah, I just got word about it. But why is Silver with you?"

"I had a vision that something was going to happen, so I went to Angel Island to warn him, but then we got attacked by G.U.N soldiers." Silver responded.

"What?! G.U.N was there too?! But why were they..? Ugh, it doesn't matter, do you know where Sonic and Tails can be?"

"No clue. The lab was empty when we got here." Knuckles says.

"Great, leave it to Sonic not being around when things start going wrong..." Amy groans, "Okay, I'm heading over there now, then we can check if any of our friends know where those two have went. Just stay alert, I have a bad feeling about all this."

"You be careful too, Amy. We'll see ya here." Knuckles says, hanging up the call.
