Work Text:
Family. A word with such an obvious yet abstract meaning. Family consisted of parents and their children. Then grandparents, aunts and uncles. Cousins. Family was connected by blood and marriage. Ahkmenrah’s family consisted of his mother and father, the many pharaohs of Egypt before him, and whether he liked it or not, Kahmunrah.
But was that his only family? Family was more than the blood coursing through his veins—family was someone to rely on. Family was someone who he could share his secrets with. Family was someone to dance with. Family was someone who would play Mario Kart with him for six hours straight in the depth of night despite the next day being a school day and there being pages of unfinished English homework lying around.
Ahkmenrah loved his parents. They’d been a little(scratch that, very) protective but they did love them. He was sure they’d treat him well if he were to stay in the British museum. He could have a chance to live the normal life he’d missed out.
But the more he thought about it… Larry, Nick, and the exhibits from the Museum of Natural History had been his family more than anyone in his bloodline these past years. The grand chase for the Tablet on Larry’s first day, when Ahkmenrah had finally been released. Their first movie night, which had actually been a failure due to the mass hysteria over popcorn and seats. The time where they had played charades together and nobody had been able to guess Attila’s lamb jerky. And of course, their adventure today. Ahkmenrah’s family had become not his biological family, but instead a middle-aged night guard, the night guard’s son, and an assortment of wax figures from the American Museum of Natural History. So… shouldn’t he stay with his family?
…Also Larry would die trying to convince the board that the Tablet should be moved to the British museum.
He knew what he had to do.
Ahkmenrah bowed to his parents. They nodded. They knew what was coming. Ahk rushed out the building, his cape flying behind him as he ran down the stairs to his family, which was walking to the van.
“Larry!” he called out.
Larry turned around, smiling, and Ahkmenrah was once again with his true family.
