Summary
In a war torn and pestilence ravaged kingdom, the royal family marries off their last remaining daughter to the opposing empire in a last ditch effort for peace.
"This is Ser Sebastian," her mother says. The knight looks at Evangeline—she can feel his gaze crawling over her exposed skin like insects marching across her chest. Somehow, Evangeline manages to look upon his gaunt face and she finds no compassion in his dark eyes. "He will be escorting you."
As Evangeline stares openly at Sebastian, she realizes he sports the same oddly light complexion as the citizens of the Besal Empire. The similarities do not end there; his high cheekbones and thin lips are features she has learned to distrust. Growing up in a war torn kingdom, Evangeline knew one thing from a young age: never trust a soul from the Empire. The Empire is responsible for the atrocious famine and every citizen must be handled with the same hesitance.
Before she can question why her parents would choose to send her with a Besal knight when they raised her to hold them in contempt, the knight speaks more softly than she could have predicted and says, "It's a pleasure to meet you, Princess."
