Lake hammered the nails into the sign, her opposite hand holding it steady. She swung the hammer but her fingers slipped and the hammer came down on them. She heard the clang before the pain registered. She cried out. Physical pain wasn’t something she was accustomed to. The fingers of her left hand ached and felt all wrong. Holding the hand up, she got a good look at her crushed pointer and middle finger. Well, that shouldn’t have happened. This isn’t good. She wasn’t going to heal. She couldn’t heal. Being made of metal was an advantage until it wasn’t.
