Danny, and Vlad, were both necromancers specialized in Ghost Magic. You see, rather than a portal the Fenton's invention was a way to turn magic into a power source. During college they could only get a small prototype to work via an infusion of ectoplasm. When it exploded in Vlad's face it fused his body with his own ghost making him a Halfa.
By the time Danny was born and grew up into a young teenager, they found that the ambient ecto of Amity Park would support a full size prototype. It reacted poorly when they first turned it on, the magic not blending with the ghostly substance properly. Until Danny brought his friends to check it out, and Sam jokingly pulled out a grimoire she had acquired from being into occult stuff.
She suspected it was fake, and they read out some of the spells while standing inside of the power generator. Laughing, Sam and Tucker moved out of it, but when Danny went to follow, he tripped and hit something that activated the device.
The magic and ectoplasm flooded through his body, and in some instinctual need to survive he managed to channel both to create his Phantom form. Ghosts were able to use the vortex of power in the generator to travel between the Mortal Realm and the Ghost Zone of the Infinite Realms. Using his new form, and the Ghost Magic, Danny fought off any who were drawn to the well of power.
Even Vlad felt the pull and moved to Amity where his obsession with Maddie strengthened. Once he realized that Danny was also a warlock, he began to try to make the teen his son to train him.
Over the next couple of years Danny made friends with most of his frequent rogues, and defeated Vlad often enough that the older man moved away. Though that didn't mean he stopped trying to kill Jack so Maddie and Danny would be his.
The Fentons have always been known as skilled Monster Hunters, able to take down practically any foe. Very few ever escaped them, and a few months after Vlad moved they get a message saying a very powerful Vampire was in Gotham.
Lady Shiva was high on Jack and Maddie's target list as they previously battled back when she was pregnant with Jazz. The vampire attempted to turn her, but they got to a witch doctor in time for the cure to be administered. Very worried there would be effects, they waiting until the baby was born, and when Jazz did not show any vampiric traits other than fairly prominent canines.
Her heightened physical skills are more often attributed to the distant Amazonian DNA in Maddie's bloodline.
With the information on where this formidable foe was, the Drs. Fentons figure that it would be a great family bonding exercise. Especially with Danny now plenty old enough to handle himself in a fight. Dragging both teens into the GAV, they head off to Gotham.
When they get to the dark and gloomy city, several of the resident blob ghosts slip into the home built tank.
"It's a Trap." They chirp to him.
A couple are trilling to Jazz as well, and she is careful to pet them while their parents can't notice her doing so. She hasn't quite gotten the hang of being able to understand the little guys just yet.
It was already late when they got there so they hunkered down for the night. The events that follow after confirm Danny's worry that the message informing them of Lady Shiva's location was from Vlad.
The first of which is the door getting ripped off while they were all asleep, despite all the anti-vampire defenses of the vehicle. Proof of the older Fenton's skills, and the training they gave their kids, all four had plenty of time to get armed and armoured.
Jack and Maddie charge out into the night and begin fighting the ninja-vampires that Lady Shiva had set upon them. Jazz posts up at the door and with a blaster taking potshots. Danny sighs and was about to swap out with her as she gets her aim from their father and is better suited to fighting with a melee weapon, when Lady Shiva joins the fray.
He watches as the vampire chooses her strikes carefully and with great precision, quickly taking down Jack and Maddie. Jazz was overwhelmed and Danny gets jumped and bound. Trying to shift into his Phantom form, he finds that his magic is being blocked.
Noting that his sister and parents were knocked out, Danny is dropped on the ground at Lady Shiva's feet. The woman leans down, lifts up his chin so he is looking into her eyes.
"Yes. You'll make a great gift for my daughter."
