Work Text:
By the time Mikey finally arrives Pete has been waiting for what feels like hours. The sun has almost risen above the horizon, the early morning light painting the parking lot in splashes of red and orange. A rare moment of peace, when everyone is either still sleeping after the night of partying or just waking up and getting ready to meet the new day on Warped Tour. The very reason why Pete wanted to meet at this hour: nobody is around to ruin their rare moment of shared privacy.
Pete smiles. Mikey smiles back and takes his hand. He looks like he had two hours of sleep at most, and his hair is all messy and disheveled, the sun having bleached it almost blond, and this is the most beautiful Pete has ever seen him.
Neither of them says a word as they cross the street, leaving behind the parking lot. Mikey’s palm is hot and clammy to the touch, and Pete instinctively tightens his grip, as if letting go would mean losing Mikey forever. It's strange how his brain works sometimes, trying to conjure the worst possible scenario when there is no apparent reason for it. Mikey isn't going anywhere, not until the end of summer, and Pete has had an entire lifetime to learn how not to make long-lasting plans. No matter how hard he tries the universe will always get in the way. But right now, with Mikey’s hand in his, it doesn’t seem important. As long as Mikey is by his side.
If he tries hard enough, he might even pretend their future lies past this crazy summer of not-so-secret late night and early morning meetings, stolen glances, and some new, special kind of love Pete isn’t sure he is ever going to experience again.
