Ogami Banri — Hiring Transcript
INTERVIEWER: Um… are you okay?
BANRI: … Yes.
INTERVIEWER: A-are you sure? It’s no big deal, really, why don’t we get out of the cold?
BANRI: …
INTERVIEWER: Don’t be scared, I’m not going to hurt you.
BANRI: Mnh… [He sounds doubtful.]
INTERVIEWER: I mean, I’d like to be strong, but I’m definitely not yet. So it’s not like I can, really. I promise?
BANRI: Tired. Go away.
INTERVIEWER: Look, I’m worried—you look like you might die or something, out here…! And your arm and leg too! I’m going to call an ambulance for you, okay?
BANRI: NO! Don’t call…no hospitals! Nothing that!
INTERVIEWER: Come with me so I can try to help you, then, or—I really will. See? I have the number ready to call.
BANRI: ….I don’t want to.
INTERVIEWER: Whoa—careful! Here, lean on me.
BANRI: No.
INTERVIEWER: Careful crossing the street too.
BANRI: The cars aren’t close.
INTERVIEWER: But you’re gonna walk slow, though—! Wait a second.
Okay. Let’s go.
[Restaurant bells jingle.]
INTERVIEWER: Table for two, please.
WAITER: Is he okay?
BANRI: Yes.
INTERVIEWER: I don’t know, I found him on the street, I think we’d better sit down.
WAITER: On the street? Well, call me over if he’s some kind of weirdo or dangerous. …Well, he looks kinda pathetic for that.
INTERVIEWER: Pathetic? That’s, ah…
WAITER: What I’m saying is if he needs more help you can’t get him or something, you can call me over too then. Follow me.
Does this table work?
INTERVIEWER: Yes, thank you very much.
BANRI: Thank you.
INTERVIEWER: Here, take my raincoat, and my school uniform’s in my bag, maybe you can use it to dry off. Sorry I don’t have anything better.
BANRI: No. You’re good. Thank you.
INTERVIEWER: What do you want to eat?
[Banri points]
INTERVIEWER: Um, just rice…?
BANRI: Mhn.
INTERVIEWER: Can I get you rice, and then something else, if you decide to have that?
BANRI: ‘S a waste…
INTERVIEWER: You can take it for later.
BANRI: It’s a waste…
WAITER: Can I take your order?
INTERVIEWER: Um, one rice, two tempura soba. Do you think he’s okay? He keeps trailing off, and almost falling asleep. Look, he’s falling asleep now.
WAITER: Maybe because he’s hungry.
INTERVIEWER: Well…We’ll find out…! Um, but.
WAITER: Why don’t you call a hospital?
INTERVIEWER: He said no.
WAITER: Well I’ll go get you your food. And if he passes out—
INTERVIEWER: Yeah, I will. But I don’t know his circumstances of why he can’t go, either.
Are you a yakuza?
BANRI: What? What’s that?
INTERVIEWER: What’s your name?
BANRI: I, I can’t say. They’ll, can find me.
INTERVIEWER: Please, is—you seem really unwell, is it the cold? Are you sick?
BANRI: Um. Wait, please.
INTERVIEWER: Okay.
…
WAITER: Here’s your rice.
BANRI: I have a brain injury, so it’s hard to talk and to live. I’m sorry for making a bad impression.
INTERVIEWER: Ohh. Good, I was—is it recent?
BANRI: No.
WAITER: Here’s your soba.
BANRI: I’m sorry, my head hurts.
INTERVIEWER: I have some Tylenol, will that help?
BANRI: I… what does it say?
WAITER: I mean, it says “tylenol”. Want me to read off the back too?
BANRI: No, it’s fine, I just…
INTERVIEWER: You don’t have to have any.
BANRI: Okay…I mean, is it…please don’t lie.
INTERVIEWER: I’m not.
[He nervously takes three Tylenol.]
INTERVIEWER: Um, why do you think people are looking for you?
BANRI: …I ran away.
…
Maybe they’re not. But, he would be.
INTERVIEWER: Who?
BANRI: Sorry. I need a moment.
INTERVIEWER: Have some rice.
BANRI: I miss him. I’m sorry. My thoughts are hard to organize. I don’t know what to tell you. Who are you?
INTERVIEWER: My name’s Takanashi Tsumugi. I go to school nearby.
BANRI: I mean, why?
INTERVIEWER: I wasn’t going to leave you out in the rain, I thought you were going to die! I thought I said that!
BANRI: So?
INTERVIEWER: So…I didn’t want that to happen.
BANRI: I did. But I realized I then then I realized I could run away.
INTERVIEWER: I really think you should go to a hospital.
BANRI: With my name, they’ll find me.
INTERVIEWER: There’s patient confidentiality, okay? We can even put you in as No-Name. I think.
BANRI: …Thank you.
INTERVIEWER: Of course…! Also, I’m going to call my dad about this, is that okay…
…Ah, I guess you’re kinda done with conversation…
That’s fine. A-as long as you eat, and get warmer, and rest and stuff, don’t worry about my questions.
