Chapter Text
Jack walked into his night shift energized and ready to go, which was rare, but he would take what he could get. He walked into the Pitt and headed to the central hub where Dana and Robby were talking.
“Hey, you two” Jack said sliding up next to Robby so their hips were touching
“You’re in a good mood Abbot. Is this not going to be a rooftop kinda shift? Usually I would contribute it to time spent with Robby, but he’s been here all day and so slammed with patients that I know for sure he didn’t get the chance to call you”
“No Dana, it’s not Robby. Can’t a guy just be in a good mood.”
“Yeah, normal people, not you”
“Rude”
“She’s not wrong Jack. Let’s do sign-out so I can get home and rot in bed before being back tomorrow”
“Hey, quick question before we start talking shop, did you take the bus this morning?”
Robby just gave him a confused look. “I ask because your car was still in the garage, but it was freezing this morning so I didn’t think you would want to walk here” Dana gave Robby a wide-eyed look from over Jack’s shoulder, her mouth hanging open
“Yeah, took the bus” Robby said too quickly, but Jack didn’t seem to notice
“Alright, now that the mystery is solved, walk me through your patients. Well, we have 5 boarders waiting for rooms upstairs, the patient in south 12 is getting transferred to the ICU with double pneumonia, discharge is processing for the kid in north 8. The chairs are packed with minor issues, McKay and Javadi just did a walkthrough to make sure no one is dying.”
“Seems simple enough. Update on the house, laundry is done, dinner was spaghetti, I left you a plate in the microwave, there’s more in the fridge. Kids were doing homework when I left and lunches are packed”
“Robby, Jack, who’s on? STEMI rolling in”
“Thanks Shen, it’s me. On my way” Jack yelled across the room throwing his bag behind the counter. “Bye, have a good night! Love you” Jack said to Robby, turning to press a quick kiss to his lips before running off to join Shen.
“Don’t start” Robby said placing his arms on the counter of the hub where Dana was sitting finishing her notes up
“Michael Robinavitch, he doesn’t know, does he?”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about”
“Your husband doesn’t know that you bought a motorcycle”
Robby didn’t answer, which told Dana everything
“I thought it was weird that he was fine with it. We all know how Dr. Jack Abbot feels about motorcycles, oh wait I mean ‘fucking donorcyles that only idiots rid when they want to tempt death’”
“It was an impulse purchase, I was handing over the money before I could even think”
“He’s going to kill you, if that motorcycle doesn’t do it first, when he finds out”
“That’s why he never will”
“Captain, you know that’s not true. Half the hospital saw you ride in this morning, I would bet that he knows within the first hour of his shift. The people here talk”
“Ugh…..I know” Robby said dragging his hands down his face “I’m an adult, I can make my own decisions and if I want a motorcycle, I’m going to get a motorcycle”
“Ooooooohhhhhh. You’re screwed” Dana said laughing walking away
————————————————————————————
Robby rode his motorcycle home, parked it next to his car in the garage, before entering the house. He was greeted by all the kids asking hundreds of questions about his day, they also did not know about the motorcycle, or they would for sure have questions about that too. He ate dinner as fast as humanly possible before taking a 5 minute shower, tucking the twins in for the night, and flopping into his bed within an hour of being home. Jack might feel well rested, but Robby did not. He was going to need as much sleep as he could get to make it through the next shift and the fallout that was sure to come once Jack found out about his recent purchase.
————————————————————————————
Jack is sitting at the hub, charting before the victims of the MVC that was just called in arrive.
“Antoine, did you see Dr. Robby’s new ride?”
“Yeah, it’s sick. He’s putting that attending money to good use”
“Larry, Antoine. Come here real fast” Jack yells to the two medical assistants as they walk past him talking
“Yeah Dr. Abbot”
“What can we do for you?”
“What were you two talking about just now”
“mmmmmm. Dr. Robby’s new ride” Antonine says looking confused
“What new ride?”
“His new Harley. We saw it this morning when he came in for shift”
“Uhm, Robby doesn’t have a Harley. I think I would know”
“He for sure does, he just bought it over the weekend. It definitely cost a pretty penny, it’s high end. We’re jealous”
“Oh yeah, his new bike. Can you two draw labs on my patient in South 4”
“For sure doc” The two medical assistants walked away extremely confused
Jack was equally confused, Robby doesn’t have a motorcycle. He wouldn’t buy one knowing how Jack feels about them, would he? Jack went on with his shift not having time to think about the fact that his husband might be lying about his mode of transportation this morning. When he finally got a break, he decided to send Robby a quick text, he knew that Robby was asleep, it’s 2am, so no response would be given until Robby woke up in a few hours, but he needed to get the question out in the open
Jack 🐝: Hey! Hope you slept well, there’s a weird rumor on the street. The word is that you bought a motorcycle. 🤔
Once the message was sent he put his phone back in his pocket and went back to treating the endless stream of patients. Around 5am, his phone dinged
Robby: Huh. Interesting
Jack 🐝: That’s your response 🤨
Robby: What did you want me to say? If the people want to talk, let them talk
Jack 🐝: I want you to answer the question
Robby: I’m not saying if I did or didn’t but if I did, I’m an adult, so no big deal
Jack 🐝: 🖕
Robby: Sorry, a little busy right now. I have to get the kids to school. See you at sign-off
Jack 🐝: Count your days, I’m going kill you if you bought one!
*5 minutes later*
Jack 🐝: Answer the damn question
*1 minute later*
Jack 🐝: Michael answer the fucking question. Did you buy a fucking MOTORCYCLE?
Jack 🐝: Did you buy a FUCKING MOTORCYCLE WITHOUT TALKING TO ME?????
*INCOMING CALL FROM JACK 🐝*
*INCOMING CALL FROM JACK 🐝*
Jack 🐝: Answer your phone! I know you’re awake! 😡
Jack is fuming waiting at the central hub staring at the staff entrance, watching for Robby to walk in so he can kill him. He doesn’t need Robby to answer the question, the radio silence and the fact that all of night shift was talking about Robby’s bike was enough for him to know the answer.
“Hey, Dr. Abbot! I heard Dr. Robby got a new ride. That’s so fucking cool, never had him pegged for a biker. I was hoping to catch him coming in, but he wasn’t here yet. Can you ask him if I can take it for a spin sometime?” Santos said as she walked in for her shift
“Santos, you can have the damn thing, he won’t be needing it anymore because as soon as I see him, he’s dead”
“What, not a fan of motorcycles?” Santos said with a teasing tone
“No, the fuck I am not”
While Jack is talking to Santos, with his back turned away from the entrance, Robby tries to sneak in. Myrna of course acknowledges his presence which alerts Jack to that the fact that his husband has arrived for his shift. A shift he might not be working, once Jack gets a hold of him
“Hey fruitcake. Where you rushing off to?”
“Hi Myrna”
“ROBBY GET OVER HERE RIGHT NOW” Jack screams as he flies around to look at the man trying to sneak in
“Good morning Dr. Abbot, I will be there in 5 for sign-off. Just need to put my bag away”
“Don’t Dr. Abbot me” Jack says storming towards Robby
“Can we not do this here in front of everyone please? Meet me on the roof?”
“I don’t think you want to take this to the roof. There’s witnesses here, maybe they will save you from death. We go up there, and I might push you off the building”
“OMG, did Dr. Abbot just threaten to kill Dr. Robby” Mel whispers to Trinity after walking in to hear the fight between her two attendings
“Damn right he did. It would be hot to see the dads fight”
“Trinity, no it wouldn’t” Whitaker says with a little disdain
“Ahh Huckleberry, Abbot would get a few good punches in and then stop to fix Robby, allowing us to help. I’m itching to do some sutures”
“It’s empty threats. They opt for the silent treatment, backhanded comments, and glares, not physical methods.” Samira says to the group of youngsters. She’s been around for numerous Rabbot fights
“Get to work kids” Dana says scaring the group into breaking up. “Go figure your shit out somewhere that isn’t the middle of my department” Dana says getting into the faces of the two attendings
“Fine, the roof it is”
“Abbot you better not push him off. I’m not in the mood to provide both medical treatment to Captain and emotionally support to you after you commit attempted murder of your husband”
“No promises Dana” Jack says as he and Robby get on the elevator
————————————————————————————
“Jack, let me…….” Robby says practically running after Jack, who plowed through the 21st floor doors and out onto the roof
“NO. Answer my question” Jack says spinning around, abruptly stopping, causing Robby to run into him
“Which question?” Robby said trying to lighten the mood, but failing
“MICHAEL YOU DAMN WELL KNOW WHICH QUESTION I’M TALKING ABOUT? DID YOU BUY A MOTORCYCLE?”
“yes” Robby says barely audible
“WHAT THE FUCK?”
“Let me explain”
“I don’t want to hear whatever stupid reasoning you have for why you bought a damn motorcycle. This was suppose to be a good shift and within an hour of being here I find out that my idiot husband bought a motorcycle, which is defintely a cry for help”
“What about me getting a motorcycle is making you mad?”
“OHH I don’t know maybe the fact that you didn’t talk to me first, or the fact that I thought we were getting past these suicidal tendencies of yours. I know that you know I hate them because I make it very apparent every chance I get. I tell our kids, I tell the residents, I tell the nurses, I tell you, and I even fucking tell patients. Did you not talk to me first because you knew it would be a no?”
“First, off I’m an adult and can make decisions for myself. Your no wouldn’t stop me from getting one. Second….”
“WE ARE MARRIED, WE TALK ABOUT STUFF LIKE THIS”
“Jack, let me finish”
“Fine, but talk fast”
“It happened super fast, I have always wanted a bike, and then it was right there at the right price and I just pulled the trigger and bought it, I didn’t even think about it”
“That’s problem number 1 we will be discussing”
“JACK, I’m not done. Don’t throw my emotional instability back in my face. I know you hate motorcycles, but I don’t. I’m sorry for not telling you about this decision. Now you can talk, don’t yell, just talk”
“Fine, but if I want to yell, I’m going to yell. *SIGH* We both know what can happen when someone crashes on one of those death traps. I know you have seen the trauma that can be inflicted on a body when they are thrown from a damn motorcycle. They aren’t called donorcycles for no reason. I don’t want to see you laying on a gurney, brain-dead, with me being forced to make decisions about your organs because you wanted to go for a joyride. Also, how are we going to face the kids? I talk about not having one, not buying one, not riding one, not even fucking looking at one and then you go and get your own. That’s hypocritical of us. So, the decision is made, we get rid of it. Santos wants it. I’m sorry for saying this is a suicide attempt, but the chances of you dying while riding on that unstable death trap are far higher than if you were in a car accident while safely driving the truck or SUV”
“We are not getting rid of it, Jack. We tell the kids, I’m an adult who made an adult decision to own a motorcycle. I can promise to wear a helmet if that will make you feel better?”
“No, it doesn’t. You are wearing full body pads and only riding it when the weather is perfect”
“That’s never possible in Pittsburgh”
“Exactly”
“JACK. You can’t tell me when and when not to ride it”
“Take the win, you get to keep it”
“I’ll ride whenever I want to”
“Fine, but if you break your femur riding on that damn thing, I will be constantly telling you I told you so”
“I bet and I wouldn’t have it any other way. We better get back down there, I have a shift to get to. Can I get a hug first?”
“No,I am pissed at you. You really need to make it up to me”
“I promise that I will”
————————————————————————————
Both day and night shift are waiting on pins and needles for the two to return from the roof
“Ahh you are both alive. Glad to see you didn’t push Robby off the roof Abbot.” Dana says as soon as the elevators doors open
“It was close. My non-rooftop shift became one and the only person to blame is Dr. Robinavitch” Jack says “What are you all looking at, don’t you people have lives to save” Jack yells at the staff, causing them all to scurry away”
“Please don’t yell at the staff. It’s me you’re mad at, so yell at me”
“Do. Not. Even. Start. With. Me. Right. Now.”
“Sorry, it must be too soon. Go home and sleep. I’ll see you at 7 tonight”
“Did you ride it to work today?”
“Yes”
“Do you have a helmet?”
“I’m a doctor too you know. I don’t want a brain injury. My helmet is under the counter right there”
“THIS ISN’T A MOTORCYCLE HELMET MICHAEL. THIS IS A BIKE OR MOPED HELMET”
“Same thing”
“NO. It’s flimsy and has no visor or face protection. I’m taking the bike home and you can drive my truck home tonight. You are not riding your mid-life crisis until you have proper safety equipment”
“Whatever. Go home Jack”
————————————————————————————
Half-way through Robby’s shift his phone starts blowing up
ABBOTS + ABBA 🐰
Ellie 🎃: ABBA, you bought a motorcycle
Beau 🏒: Holy shit, I have never seen dad this mad, not even that time that the twins stole his leg and broke it
Ellie 🎃: Someone hasn’t been listening to life lessons with Dr. Jack Abbot lately
Beau 🏒: Yeah, I’m pretty sure the number one rule is NO DONORCYCLES
Robby ⚓️: don’t you two have homework or something
Ellie 🎃: No. Dad is like pacing, what are the signs of a heart attack again?
Beau 🏒: You are not going to be able to ride that bike, because you’ll be too heavy wearing all the safety equipment dad is buying. He keeps mumbling about “He’s having a mid-life crisis that is going to kill him and take me down too.”
Ellie 🎃: You better text him, before he has a heart attack
Beau 🏒: You’re mid-life crisis couldn’t have been like a dog or another tattoo or a questionable piercing
Robby ⚓️ : You two need to stop being so dramatic and feeding into your dad’s delusion. I’m an adult who can make my own decisions
Jack 🐝: Don’t tell them how to feel. If they want to be upset about, let them be upset about it. Apparently we have no communication in this house or at least you seem to not feel the need to discuss things with your family.
Robby ⚓️: 🙄
Ellie 🎃: if we get a second helmet, can I ride with you abba
Jack 🐝 : HELL NO. As long as you are living under my roof, there will be no motorcycle riding. You’re abba might make questionable decisions, but you kids should know better
Robby ⚓️: you’re being insane. Ellie you can ride with me
Jack 🐝: FUCK NO. You aren’t going to kill my daughter
Robby: OUR daughter
Jack 🐝: you are in no place to claim to be a parent right now. You are making the same choices that teenage boys make. You are a man in your 50’s who just bought the same things that 20 year olds buy to impress girls
Robby ⚓️: JONATHAN ABBOT STOP RIGHT NOW
Jack 🐝: I will not stop. if you want to die, so be it, but your mid-life crisis is not also going to take my children down too. I’ll be the responsible one, since you’ve decided you want to be a friend and not a parent
Robby ⚓️: Holy shit, take a breath brother. I thought we talked this through and we’re fine now
Jack 🐝: Yeah, well we’re not. I lost a leg and now you are doing things that could result in you getting hurt. I will do everything in my power to make sure you give up these childish ways and grow the fuck up
Robby ⚓️: you did not just pull the amputee card on me. IT’S A MOTORCYCLE, it’s not like I decided to start doing drugs or something. Let me live my life a little
Jack 🐝: OLD MEN DON’T BUY THINGS THAT WILL CAUSE A PREMATURE DEATH
Robby ⚓️: I have to go back to work, you’re being ridiculous
Ellie 🎃: can you take your fight out of the group chat
Beau 🏒: I’m with Ellie
Robby ⚓️: see you guys later tonight! Love you El and Beau
————————————————————————————
“Still mad about the bike?” Dana said smirking as Robbie looked up from his phone
“Yep”
“Well, I think it’s badass captain”
“Thanks Dana”
