Chapter Text
Jay has a secret he has been keeping from the rest of the team. He is obsessed with reading fanfictions between himself and a certain fire elemental. He has had a crush on Kai for a while now, and this is the only way he can get his feelings out without losing his mind.
At first, it was just a one time thing. He was simply doomscrolling when he came across a fanart of him and Kai kissing. This is not the first time a fan shipped them together; won’t be the last either but seeing it always made his heart skip a beat. He quickly glanced around to make sure the coast was clear before switching to his throwaway account to like the post. He had to show his appreciation for his fans after all, even if they didn’t know it was him.
After that he opened up the comment section. Apparently, the fanart was based on a fanfiction off a website called "Archive of Our Own.” Curious, he clicked the attached link and had been hooked ever since.
Now he even writes his own fanfictions, x readers to be more specific. He usually tends to stick with one shots with how busy he is but, recently he tried his hand at writing a multi-chapter fic. Right now, he is writing a Kai x Reader spy AU. It’s an enemies to lovers slow burn, and he is already 8 chapters in. Unfortunately, the world was in peril once again, so it's been left unfinished and un-updated for some time now. He is going to go back to it, he just has so many other things to complete.
Jay was hunched over his newest project. It was just a mess of junk and bolts right now, but he’d make it into something useful.
Suddenly, the man of all his thoughts, Kai, busts through the door.
“What the hell is this Jay?!” Kai screams, shoving his phone into Jay’s face.
Jay jumped up, his tools slipping out of his hands onto the table, “What is what?” Jay shouted, trying his best to match Kai’s tone. Kai didn’t respond and just pointed at his phone. Jay squinted to get a better look at the screen. In bold lettering were the familiar words A Kai x Reader Spy AU by thelightningninja351. In other words, it was his fanfic.
“I don’t know what that is?” Jay tried, but by the fuming look on the other ninja's face, he was not buying it.
“Is this some sort of sick joke?”
So much ran through Jay’s mind at once, yet no words could come out. Like a printer, jammed because too much paper has been shoved in it. Now, Kai knew that he was some creep who liked to write about his teammates. He’ll probably go and tell Sensei Wu and Jay’s life as a ninja would be ruined. He'd better start mentally preparing to move back in with his parents.
“Where’s the next update?” Kai demanded, “I’ve been waiting for 5 whole months, I need to know if I managed to save Y/N from prison!”
Jay blinked, too shocked for words. He took a deep breath in a feeble attempt to reboot his brain, “Wait, so you aren’t mad?”
“Mad?” Kai shook his head, “No way man, how could I be mad when you managed to capture how badass I am?” Kai laughed, his already massive ego getting bigger, “Is this how you think about me on missions?” Kai questioned, pointing to a line in his fic, he watched as Jay's face warmed up as he reread what he wrote,
“The masked man took out the enemy with one swift, swing of his dagger. A blip of smooth tanned skin peeking through a slight graze on his shoulder. His toned, bulging muscles flexed as he reached his hand towards you, ‘Are you alright Y/N?’ the man whispered seductively, petals fell from the trees as you-”
“No- no of course not.” Jay stuttered, he couldn't bear to read any more. He can’t believe how down bad he sounded. Just writing Kai a good ol’ fashion love letter would’ve been less embarrassing.
“How do you even know it was me who wrote this?” Jay tried to deflect, fiddling with his screwdriver.
“Your username is thelightningninja351.” Kai deadpanned.
“Well…” Jay started, cursing his past self’s lack of creativity, “How did you find the fic anyway? Is your ego so high that you just read x reader fics of yourself?” Jay teased, watching as this time Kai blushed.
“What, of course not,” Kai yelled. “You left your browser open and I just happened to see your account!”
Oh, Jay thought, now that makes perfect sense. Of course Kai wouldn’t be spending his free time reading fanfics. He is surprised that Kai even knows how to use the internet half the time. Let’s just hope that Kai didn’t look too close at his account to see the more questionable Jay x Kai fics he has bookmarked.
“After I finished the fic I even went to your computer to see if you had continued writing anything.” Kai continued, not caring that he had just admitted to looking through Jay’s stuff. Kai stepped closer,
“Where’s the next chapter Jay?” Kai demanded, sounding a bit desperate.
“I’m going to write it!” Jay squeaked, eyes darting at the closing space between them. Jay turned his head away to the safety of the table, willing his heart to stop pounding. “Just give me a moment.”
“No!” Kai yelled, snatching the screwdriver from Jay’s hand. “It’s been long enough! Just one more chapter.” Kai begged, “One more chapter will satisfy me for the next 5 months you don’t update for. I can help!” Kai begged. At that, Jay burst out laughing.
“You? Help? What do you know about writing fanfics?”
“Not much.” Kai shrugged, “But I do know a thing or two about myself.”
“You’ll probably just make yourself sound more cocky and insufferable than you already are.” Jay teased knowing damn well that he was fully on board with this idea. He will do pretty much anything to spend more time alone with Kai, even if it is just writing x reader fics.
Jay got up. “But I guess maybe you might have a few good ideas, let’s go before I change my mind.”
Kai laughed warmly as he followed Jay out of the room, eager to get to the computer. Jay's heart tightened at the sound of it. He can listen to Kai laugh all day if he could. Man, what exactly did I just get myself into?
