Trickcal: Roots of Yggdrasil

Summary:

"All things shall return once more; embraced by the roots and branches of Yggdrasil Eldr"

The once harmonious realm of Elias, where all the races lived in coexistence and harmony, was plunged into an age of war. A massive insurgency within the sprite kingdom of Erpeid, the technological colonialization from the other-worldly elves, and the emergence of an extremist movement of questionable sanity; it seems everyone wants to tear Elias apart. However, in this age of turmoil, a prophecy speaks of a promised "Enlightened One" that shall deliver the citizens of Elias into a new era... for the better or worse.

Notes:

"What the hell is a Trickcal???" is a question that I've asked myself when the global server announcement PV was released.

The series itself has already existed for 2 years now in the Korean server, and it is quite popular among Asian players. Only recently that the global server is launched, and as first impression goes, Trickcal is certainly a gacha game of all time (in a good way). Hence this is where the fic comes in. Since Trickcal has not yet have any form of traction for the global audience, I decided to challenge myself and establish an environment here in Ao3. I did it for Reverse: 1999 and Chrono Ark, might as well go at it again.

Before continuing, there are a few points I want to get across:
1. This fanfiction is both an Alternate Universe (Canon Divergence) and Canon Complaint. Most of this fic would comply with the main story as I progress through the actual game, but there will also be improvisation due to limited information, thus leading to some parts not 100% canon.
2. The Enlightened One (a.k.a the MC) for this fic will not be a self-insert and instead will be a fixed character of her own by the name of "Mimir". I won't really go into details on her backstory yet, but her character arc will come in due time.
3. This fic would take a different writing approach compared to my other works. I really don't want this to be a dead end, so I will try to employ a more effective method by keeping everything simple and making sure the fic reflects my actual gameplay experience. Once I'm more settled and confident, I will try and take on more ambitious approach.

Okay, now you can pass through~

Chapter Text

Elias is at war.

For centuries, the denizens of this mythical world lived in harmony; embraced by the roots and branches of Yggdrasil Eldr. Amongst the races that dwelled, the highborn sprites had been the ones who took the mantle of leadership ever since the Creator first planted the seed of Yggdrasil into the soils; creating the first kingdom of “Elfeinland”. Empowered by the blessings given by the Creator, the sprites—governing under the name of “The Yggdrasil Order”—brought civilization into this otherwise lawless land that was once infested with monsters, demons, and other evil that bumped in the night. Major roads were paved and settlements were established. Order was placed in the people’s best interests, and with it, an era of peace that lasted for generations.

But this peace was tenuous.

As the passage of time carried on, the cracks of instability became visible each and every day. Discontent grew, and the apparent classism between the people and the Yggdrasil Order could no longer be hidden. Queen Erpin, the one who should’ve been governing her subjects, became callous with her seat of power. Unwise decisions, hubris, and indulgence; the rule of Queen Erpin took a steep decline as many factions began to question her legitimacy and ignited sparks that would lead into numerous civil wars.

With the tension rising between the factions, a new threat emerged. The elves, a race rooted in technology and scientific advancements, arrived from a faraway realm. The moment they established their capital of Monatium, the elves began their rapid expansion within Elias, indiscriminately clearing lands and forcefully taking over settlements once held by the other factions. The reason that the elves got away with their expansions was due to Queen Erpin’s negligence, which didn’t help with the Order’s already-fractured image.

The public’s unrest could no longer be quelled and the once insignificant spark had finally caught fire. A revolution—one that Elias had never seen before—struck the sprite capital city of Yydaclir when it was at its weakest. The Yggdrasil Order was dismantled and Queen Erpin was finally dethroned by the insurgents. Anarchy had placed its reign and now they waged war with the foreign elf invaders. As the two factions tore Elias apart, there were those who held contempt against both the elves and the separatists, thus they banded together as a rebellion party who called themselves “Justice Revolution” and were vowed to cast out their lives for the people’s betterment, even if it meant that they must commit fell deeds under the name of “righteousness”.

Turmoil seemed certain for the people of Elias… but it doesn’t have to be that way.

In the time of chaos and uncertainties, a prophecy was born; one that spoke of hopes and dreams. By the will of Yggdrasil Eldr alone shall a “prophet” of the Creator’s image descend into Elias. They would be heralded as “The Enlightened One” who shall restore the Yggdrasil Order and return Elias to a much kinder, harmonious era.

Fret not. Though you must travail this road of thorns, you will not be forgotten nor abandoned. Your efforts will bear fruit in due time, as the blessings of yore shall remain as a promise in your heart. So, follow the direction to where the roots of Yggdrasil go, and it shall guide you to the right place and time. And eventually… the same roots shall bring you home; back to the ever-flowing “Well” that has been promised to you.

Until then, I look forward to seeing what miracles you can achieve, my dearest Mimir.

Notes:

Fun fact: I had this idea for the prologue days before the official release based on the limited context and also the introduction PV. I guess I wanted to go for a more "grounded" route if that makes sense.

Also, This chapter itself is inspired by Mikey's narration in the first episode of Legends of Avantris' "Uprooted" campaign. There's something about Uprooted's cracked and unhinged nature that left a certain impression for me.
