He did not hate Jobst- couldn't let himself hate Jobst. To hate him would put his world into a worse shape than it already existed in. The misshapen bonds that kept his feet on the ground and his hand from a knife or a rope in the dark existed only because he told himself what lay between them was built on a foundation of fondness and care.
