Fraternizing with My Enemy?

Summary:

‘B, are you really cheating on me with my villain?’ He makes sure to add a bunch of pleading emojis after it and the link to the article before sending it.

He places his phone down, a soft smirk on his face as he does. He’s about to pick up the sandwich he packed himself for lunch when his phone starts ringing and excitement courses through him as he answers the phone. “You can’t possibly think that’s true,” Bruce growls.

Or, Jimmy writes an article about how Bruce Wayne and Lex Luthor are obviously together but Clark, who is dating Bruce, takes the chance to mess with Bruce and it backfires a bit.

Work Text:

Clark is typing at his desk when it happens. Jimmy comes practically running onto the floor from the elevator, excitement coming off him in waves. Clark and Lois glance at each other before both turning their chairs to watch as Jimmy starts typing at his computer, not even bothering to sit down in his seat. “What’s got you so excited?” Lois asks.

Jimmy doesn’t even turn to look at them as he talks, his words coming out quickly. “I got a great scoop at that Metropolis gala last night!”

This makes Clark perk up, Bruce was there last night and he didn’t say anything exciting had happened aside from him getting information from Luthor but Bruce also had a different definition of exciting. Clark had wanted to go instead of Jimmy but Perry didn’t want to send him since Lex Luthor was supposed to be there and Clark has written one too many articles about the bad things Luthor is doing for their city. “What is it?” He asks.

“Last night I saw Bruce Wayne and Lex Luthor talking!”

Clark raises an eyebrow and looks at Lois to see she looks just as confused. “And?” She presses.

“Well at first it didn’t look like anything but throughout the night they kept talking and then I got this great picture and I think they might be dating!”

Clark has to quickly stop himself from laughing at Jimmy, knowing that it won’t do any good, but when he’s schooled his reaction he finally opens his mouth to talk. “Jimmy, you can’t be serious.”

This finally makes Jimmy turn from his computer, finally looking at the two of them. “Why wouldn’t I be? You should have seen them! Bruce was rubbing on his arm and leaning in all close to whisper to him!”

If Clark was dating anyone else he would probably feel jealous but he knows Bruce. Bruce would never cheat on him and he had been talking to Luthor last night to get information about some new technology he’s working on. “Like Bruce does with everyone?” Lois asks. “I mean, I know you don’t go to the Gotham galas but haven’t you heard from Clark just how much Bruce Wayne flirts with people?” Lois snorts.

“This is different! They’re both billionaires and there isn’t that power imbalance, they’re perfect for each other and if they get together their companies can join into one! It makes perfect sense!”

Jimmy turns back to his computer, typing away again. “Seems we can’t change his mind,” Clark hums as he looks at Lois.

“Yes… I wonder how this story will go over.”

Clark wonders the same thing. He doubts Bruce will care about it, there have been plenty of articles that speculate he’s dating someone when he’s not and there’s even been a few asking who a mystery man is when they’ve gotten caught on dates, but he has no idea how Luthor will react to the news at all. He doubts Luthor will go after Jimmy but he does hope Luthor doesn’t try anything with Bruce.

However, the thought also makes an idea spark in his mind. It’s not often that he really gets to be dramatic, especially not with Bruce, so the idea of getting to be dramatic and messing with Bruce does amuse him. It doesn’t take long for the plan to form in his mind but he knows he’ll have to wait for Jimmy to actually post the article or it won’t make any sense to Bruce.

It’s around lunch time that Jimmy finally finishes the article and gets the okay to post it, though even Perry looked at Jimmy a little skeptically when the article was presented to him. When Clark sees it go online he grabs his phone, opening his chat with Bruce.

“I don’t know…” He says, purposely making sure Bruce can hear the pout on his face. “The article looks pretty legit… I just can’t believe you would do this to me, I mean you know how I feel about him.”

“Clark, you know damn well that I’m not dating him,” Bruce tsks. “I don’t like him anymore than you.”

“The picture looked very convincing, you don’t touch my arm like that…” He doesn’t have to see Bruce to know that the man is scowling and he’s probably holding his phone in a death grip.

“Oh… You want convincing? I’ll show you convincing, Baby,” Bruce replies, voice dark but playful.

Bruce suddenly hangs up the phone and Clark blinks, looking at his phone confused. What does that mean? He tries to call Bruce but his call goes right to voicemail which makes him frown. He doubts he seriously upset Bruce, he would have been able to tell if he had, so what could Bruce be up to? Suddenly he finds himself a bit nervous, wondering if he’s set himself up for Bruce to mess with him in return. He’s about to try and call again when Lois’s voice pulls him away. “Clark! I need you to come with me to check out this speech the mayor is giving!” She calls, already packing her bag.

Clark looks between her and his phone before sighing, standing up and grabbing his sandwich. He'll just have to deal with the consequences later on. “Coming!” He calls back as he takes a bite out of his sandwich.

After following Lois around for hours taking notes as she asked questions he’s eager to finally sit at his desk, and maybe to try and call Bruce again, and as they go up in the elevator he checks his phone to see if Bruce has texted. He frowns at the lack of notifications, stepping out of the elevator without looking up when it stops. “Oh my god.”

Clark looks at Lois when he hears her, scowling in confusion when he sees her shell shocked face. He turns to look at what she’s looking out and he lets out a choked sound at the sight. His desk, and the floor surrounding it really, is covered in vases of roses. There must be at least twenty bouquets around and on his desk and between them is Bruce Wayne. Bruce is sitting on his chair with his feet up on the desk and a pout on his face.

“Why is Bruce Wayne at your desk?” Lois asks.

Bruce must hear the question because he looks up, a big smile spreading across his face. “Clark!” He doesn’t get the chance to reply to either of them as Bruce rushes over, suddenly jumping into his arms. “I saw that news article that was posted and I just had to rush over to make sure you didn’t believe it,” Bruce says, his voice pouty and with a slight whine. Clark instantly recognizes it as his ‘Brucie’ voice, a voice Clark has heard plenty of times when he’s at galas interviewing Bruce. “You know I would never cheat on you, right Baby?”

Clark isn’t sure what to say, his mouth agape as he looks at Bruce. Everyone around the office seems to be just as shocked as him and he has to quickly shake his head to clear his mind. The only reason they haven’t come out about their relationship is because Bruce was worried but if Bruce is going to do this then he might as well go along with it. “Of course not Bruce,” He quickly answers.

“So you forgive me for the picture you saw? I was just talking to him, you know that, right? I mean we used to go to school together. I can’t believe you guys post things like that, I thought you were much more reputable,” Bruce pouts, pulling away. “Maybe I should buy this place and make sure I'm not accused of cheating on you again. Where’s Perry White’s office?”

Clark doesn’t even get to answer because Bruce is already walking off in the direction of Perry’s office. It takes no time for Jimmy to rush over, grabbing his arm. “You’re dating Bruce Wayne? Why did you not tell me that before I posted that article?” He hisses.

“How could you keep this from us?” Lois adds on.

“Oh my god what if he sues me for defamation,” Jimmy gasps, pulling away to run his hands through his hair.

Clark chuckles nervously, unsure how to answer all of these questions. Luckily he’s saved by the elevator behind him opening and Lex Luthor’s voice ringing out through the floor. “Who wrote this article about me?”
