It had been almost a year since the war with the demons had been won, almost a year since Sanemi had put down his sword. It was peaceful, sure, but it was an adjustment. Still, after he came to terms with his brother's death, he found it easier to be in a pleasant mood. Now, he sat side by side with Tomioka, their shoulders brushing lightly as they spoke. They'd gotten considerably closer, but Tomioka still brought up random questions.
“What's your favorite color?” The ravenette had asked, staring up at the sky with a soft smile on his lips. Of course, Sanemi had yet to tell him about his complete color blindness. How could he answer if he didn't remember what colors looked like? Everything was so dull to him, bleeding together in shades of grey.
“Guess.” He said instead, violet eyes focused on Tomioka's features, on his soft eyes that had gotten their shine back, on his now short hair that perfectly framed his face, on his gentle smile that always made the albino's heart beat faster. He couldn't help but think how pretty he was.
“Yellow.” It was an immediate answer, like Tomioka had thought long and hard about it already. It was as though the mere mention of the color brought back yellow memories. The yellow sun shining on his siblings as they played in the dirt streets, dancing around the yellow flowers and tugging at their mother's yellow yukata to urge her to join them.
“Yeah.” He said, turning his attention to the colorless sky, wondering if he was remembering the color right. Did the sky look like how it used to? Had it changed, like everything else? “You got it.”
“Really?” The excitement in Tomioka's tone brought a smile to Sanemi's lips. “You're not messing with me, are you? It's actually yellow?”
The albino nodded, looking at the man beside him once again. “Yeah. It's yellow.” Even as everything changed around him, even as the birds took different routes, even as the clouds came and went, yellow would still be yellow. “Always has been.”
