'Smosis 'sMike

Summary:

Day 17: Lightner

Three monsters have a meal in QC's Diner.

Work Text:

"Dis town don't seem too bad so far," the kangaroo monster started, paws resting casually on the table.

The short, diamond-headed monster took a sip of his drink before responding. "... Yeah. Seems like a nice place. Very quaint. This diner's real cute, too."

The fire elemental nodded ecstatically, seemingly enjoying the ambience. His black flame paradoxically glowed brighter.

"... Hopefully, it won't take too long for us to acclimate. We'll be fine! We're gonna be fine!"

"I believe in ya, Boss."

"Okay. That just makes me sound sad."

"Well, you's were cryin's a bit when we—"

"OKAY, okay, that's enough. We're in public."

They gave him a reassuring pat on the shoulder, before turning to look at the waitress making her way to the table. She was seemingly engrossed in her phone, perfectly balancing a tray of food with one paw while typing with the other. When she looked at them, she merely glanced up like it was an inconvenience to do much more, before setting the plates down at the table.

"Thanks!" The diamond-head chirped. The others expressed similar sentiments. The waitress simply nodded, not even looking up, before walking away.

The three began digging into their meals.

"Uh, question, Boss."

"Yea?" he said, through half a mouthful of food.

"How do you's... eat? You don't gots a mouth."

"Whuh? Huh? Well, OBVIOUSLY I—" He paused. "... That's none of your business, guy."

"Okay. Just askin's."

The elemental perked up, earning the attention of the other two.

"Whatcha got, bud? A theory?"

He stabbed a chunk of potato with his fork, showing it off, before setting it back down and pouring a small amount of water onto it from his glass. He then gestured with his hands, mimicking a wave passing through a wall of some sort.

The others looked confused, before the diamond-head burst out laughing. "PFFT! NO! I absolutely do NOT! Even if I did, that wouldn't work for anything solid."

They laughed together. The tallest looked slightly confused, before a look of revelation crossed their face.

"Oh! Is he saying you 'smose it?"

"SMOSE?!" The shortest all but slapped the table, laughing loudly. The other two joined him.

The diner didn't feel so foreign with their comfortable noise.
