    “What did you do?” Evan asks. His voice carries more alarm than anger, but Barty flinches anyway.

    “I found him,” Barty says, but even he doesn’t sound convinced.

    Evan arches a brow. “Found him?”

    Barty sighs, bouncing the baby clumsily as it starts to fuss. “Okay, fine. I didn’t find him. I was on a job, and—” he swallows—“the baby was theirs. The Longbottoms. And I… I couldn’t leave him there.”
