“Why would anyone agree to have an “open relationship”? asked Reid with a frown on his face.
The team was tracking down a couple of unsubs. The profile had suggested they were most likely married but the way their MO was done, it suggested there were marital problems.
They had been at the police precinct all day, trying to find a new lead, but so far they were stumped. Hotch was standing a couple of steps behind him; Morgan was sitting to his right and Rossi was on the other side of the room, looking at some of the pictures from the crime scenes.
“Some people mistakenly believe it will help them to unwind unresolved tension or strengthen their bond as a couple. Others just use it to justify their need to cheat and not be held accountable.” Answered Morgan, playing with a pen in his hand.
“If you don’t love your partner anymore, you should communicate.” Reid was clearly upset about that line of thought.
“Easier said than done.” Said Hotch from his place. He walked and stood behind Reid’s chair. “We know humans have trouble communicating their needs sometimes, and a romantic relationship is one of the biggest challenges to navigate. If everyone thought the same way you do, Reid, we would be out of a job.” He said in a teasing voice.
Reid looked up at him and squinted. He understood Hotch was just trying to give him time to distract himself from all the information and maybe get a new idea, which he greatly appreciated. He felt hungry too, so he’d become a grouch in a few more minutes unless someone fed him.
“What about you guys?” said Rossi walking closer to the table, “would you ever consider having an open relationship?”
Everyone in the team knew Hotch and Reid had been dating for months, and having their support as their friends and team had been greatly appreciated. So the question had taken both by surprise, with the amused tone from the older agent.
“The only open thing will be his head when I kill him with the gun he gifted me.” Answered Reid without missing a beat, not even looking up from his phone where he was dialing Prentiss to ask her to bring lunch for everyone.
The pen in Morgan’s hand fell to the floor, while the man stared at his friend, speechless. Rossi was staring at Hotch, and Hotch was smiling at Reid’s head.
“Monogamy or Death.” Hotch’s voice was soft when he said it with a playful tone.
“God, Homeland, Family.” Replied Reid, looking up at his boyfriend.
Rossi exchanged looks with Morgan. They understood. They better mind their own business.
