Chapter Text
He liked being cold rather than hot. And he liked the rain better than the burning sun.
You’d think he’d tire of the rain, it being never ending. But it became like white noise to him. It went to the point where if it stopped, he’d probably go insane. He just got used to it after a while. Same thing with the cold. You may not like it at first, but you’d get used to it after a while or go numb. With heat, you were just hot and sweaty. He’d rather be cold and numb.
But one time while venturing, they decided to rest under a box. It wasn’t the best obviously, but it stopped the rain from falling on them. And it was best to let her take a break from the rain. She was coughing and had a runny nose. Surprisingly, he hadn’t gotten those symptoms. Maybe he just got used to the rain. But even with the raincoat she was still getting sick. He wanted to help her survive, not get her sick!
It was silent while they sat. Much like on their way to Pale City, but he wanted to talk. He wanted to become her best friend.
“What’s your name?”
“Hm?”
“Your name, mine’s Mono.”
“…Six.”
“We both have number names!”
“…” She gave a light smile, but it was enough to make him smile. Even if she couldn’t see it, she could probably tell.
It was awkward, but he didn’t mind. He got her to talk. And her voice didn’t sound sick. Even though she was still shivering.
He scooted closer to her and wrapped his trench coat around her. It wasn’t much help, especially from the swamp they swam in, but it was something. It was a nice gesture at the very least. And it seemed like she appreciated it too, as she wrapped herself up as well. They were still silent, but Mono still felt like they knew what each other was thinking about. Even if there wasn’t much besides survival, they still kept each other company.
He actually felt warmer with her. He held her hand and noticed that her hand was warm. Maybe it was from the doctor. He should’ve joined her. Then he wouldn’t be so cold. He was so cold that he hadn’t even realized that he was cold!
But how was Six warmer than him? She was getting sick, and was still warmer than him. Maybe he should try taking better care of himself.
And he was doing it now. With Six. She was calm and still, almost like the rain, if it were brighter. She was the only warm thing here. Probably in all of this Nowhere place as well.
He rested his head on hers. She didn’t seem to mind. She then turned her head closer to him and rested her head on his shoulder. He let out a sigh, which made Six sigh as well. The tension they had built was all let go, and they actually got their mind off of survival. Just in the moment. In a small box in the rain, close for warmth, sharing this nightmare together with other monsters not knowing of their existence as they sat and rested. This was one of the only times they actually got to rest and not think about monsters. Actually, this was probably the only time.
This was the only type of warmth he liked and would want to seek out. He liked this type of peaceful warmth.
But now it is gone. He was hugging himself with eyes burning into him, his head resting on the chair, and tears streaming down his face. The only warmth and peace was gone. It was turned into a fire that stung. He would forever be cold now. He would forever be numb.
