Gone, but not Forgotten and, always Returned

Summary:

A tale of love, loss and reconnection.
Iruka and Kakashi had lost their son but were told that he would one day return.
With this information they would search the globe for him and one day he would be back where he belonged.

Notes:

This is my gift for the wonderful Paxton1976
KKIR Server Spooktacular Exchange 2025
Spooky Treat-"Gone Missing" (At least that was the intent)

So, I will apologize this definitely turned out to be more of an in-depth Outline than an actual story. I had so much detail and intention planned out in my head for this one and for whatever reason I could not get it to translate from brain to fingers.
I then also ran out of time to get it all out. Lol.
So I hope you get some enjoyment out of this even though it turned into a "See Spot Run" story more than an actual story.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Kakashi sighed as he unlocked the door to his apartment. He didn't hear any noise as he let himself inside and toed off his boots.

"Honey I'm home!" he called out. He was met with quiet.

"Are you still hiding underneath the bed?" he questioned as he made his way further inside. There was a slight noise that most would have dismissed, but it let him know that he was correct. He made his way into his bedroom and as he did a splash of brown disappeared underneath the bed.

He sighed quietly to himself, and got down on his knees to peek under the bed. Golden brown eyes met his.

"You really need to come out from under here love," when he received no answer he laid himself down and crawled under the bed as well. They had gotten a raised bed for this exact reason, so the fit wasn't too terrible, but it still wasn't the most comfortable.

He reached out and ran his fingers through the dark brown fur of the wolf in front of him.

"How about we go for a walk? It's been a while since you've hunted and you need to eat." The wolf leaned into his touch and let out a low whine, but didn't otherwise move. Kakashi moved closer petting the brown wolf as they both laid under the bed. Kakashi knew the routine well, it had been happening almost every time they needed to move for the last fifty years or so. He really hated to see his mate like this.

"We'll find him, we can't give up hope. There are a couple other cities that we need to check out, did you decide where you wanted to go next?" He wasn't expecting an answer so when he didn't get one it was hardly surprising.

"Alright I need a shower and you need to hunt so you better be ready to go by the time I'm done or I am going to drag you out and I know how much you hate that." There was another low whine and a soft growl in response. Kakashi patted the wolf's head and made his way out from under the bed.

"You know you could always join me?" he threw over his shoulder as he gathered what he needed. He could hear movement now as the wolf also removed himself from under the bed. Kakashi looked back and saw his mate peeking out at him.

He let out a small chuckle, "You will have to change back though I'm not showering with you like that. I don't want to smell like wet dog." He heard the heavy huff as he entered the bathroom and turned on the shower for them. He could feel the shift in the air that told him that the wolf had shifted back into his human form.

"You are such an ass" tan arms snaked around his waste.

"True, but you still love me anyway" Kakashi turned around in the mans arms looking into those same golden brown eyes. He watched the small flush that took over the scar on the bridge of his lovers nose.

"Be that as it may," Iruka sighed heavily and laid his head on Kakashi's shoulder. Kakashi wrapped his arms around the shorter mans shoulders and pulled him tightly against himself.

"I know, I know. We won't give up I promise you that. I won't let you give up so come on let's get cleaned up and go out." Iruka rubbed his face at the juncture of his neck and shoulder and Kakashi rubbed his back until the brunette finally pulled away.

"Alright then"

Kakashi knew that these past decades had been difficult on his husband. They had been looking for their lost child for a couple of centuries now and they seemed to be no closer now than they had been in the beginning. It seemed as though it was finally starting to take it's toll on Iruka.

They had actually felt some hope when they'd made the decision to come to Konoha, they had done their research and all the signs had been.

The natural disasters and the mysterious happening that foretold the rebirth of a demon.

That had been almost twenty years ago though and so far that had had no luck in finding their little boy.

Kakashi could remember the exact day, the exact time that he had been brought into their lives. It had been one of the happiest. The absolute love and devotion that covered Iruka's face the first time he'd held the little bundle in his arms would forever be imprinted in Kakashi's mind.

They had been together for a while at that point and Iruka had kept alluding to wanting more. Kakashi had of course been fine with it being just the two of them. He had a hard enough time being around others. He was an energy vampire after all and it didn't take much for him to drain others if he wasn't careful.

He had gotten lucky when he had met Iruka, the very rare werewolf vampire hybrid. The man himself had been ostracized by the supernatural world and had been wandering alone. Call it Fate call it Destiny. He didn't care, they were meant to be together. So when Iruka had started hinting at wanting to grow their tiny family Kakashi could only tell him yes.

Of course there was the issue of them not being able to produce on their own. So they had gone to a shrine and made offerings and prayed. For nearly a whole year they would go and ask and pester and offer. They were beginning to lose hope and Kakashi had even joked a couple of times that they could steal a child, the looks that Iruka had given him stopped those quickly.

It wasn't that Iruka hadn't thought of a human child, it was just that he knew that as Immortals he wouldn't be able to handle the fact that the child would grow up and die in what would feel like no time at all to them.

One day, as they were making their offerings at a little tucked away shrine a bright light appeared and a tall slender figure walked out of it. The both of them were too stunned to do much but stare as the shadowed figure came into focus before them. The being had long red hair and golden eyes. He was holding a bundle of blankets in his arms. Kakashi and Iruka continued to stare as what could only be a god came to a stop in front of them.

"Do you two know how annoying you are? Here. If I give him to you will you stop? I have more important things to be doing than to be listening to your pathetic whining day in and day out." his voiced was deep, yet soft.

Iruka was the first to come back to his senses and looked up that the man with wide eyes.

"Do you mean what I think you mean is that ? Is that actually a baby?" his voice barely above a whisper. The god just laughed at him. "Of course it is, isn't that what you've been whining about for the past year?" He held the bundle in his arms out for Iruka to take.

Iruka did, very hesitantly almost as if he was afraid that this was all some cruel joke.

Kakashi watched as his mate, moved aside the blankets to peer down at the smallest creature Kakashi was sure he had ever seen. Fluffy yellow hair stood up in all directions from the babes head, and it had black marks upon it's cheeks like they were meant to be whiskers.

Kakashi watched as tears formed in Iruka's eyes and the biggest smile spread across his face.

"Look at him Kakashi" he whispered as he touched his fingers gently to the child's cheek tracing those black lines "He's perfect" his mate was in awe of the child and Kakashi honestly couldn't say that he wasn't as well.

Iruka looked back up to the god like figure, "So he is ours?" the red haired man nodded looking somewhat bored now.

"Yes, he is yours now and forever " Iruka just nodded and looked back down at the sleeping child.

"Can I ask what you are called my lord?" Kakashi spoke for the first time, he was grateful that their prayers had been answered especially for how happy that it made Iruka and he wanted to thank the god.

"You may call me Kurama. Or actually don't, I would rather no longer hear from you two at all. If there is nothing else I am going to take my leave now." The new parents thanked the god as he vanished into the same bright light that he had appeared from.

Iruka looked up at Kakashi smiling. Kakashi couldn't help but smile back at him they had a son now.

"Kurama. I like that. Should we call him that in honor of him? To the being that finally gave us what we've been asking for?" the brunette asked. Kakashi didn't really have an opinion on the matter. He was just happy that Iruka was happy.

"It sounds good to me"

That was the beginning, how their little family had started. There was of course many ups and downs and a lot of learning curves that came with being new parents, but for the most part there were way more good days than bad. Kurama had grown and flourished into a wonderful young man. He tended to take after Iruka more so than he did Kakashi. He was always standing up for what he believed in. Helping those that didn't seem to be able to help themselves. It actually got him into trouble more than once and had them fleeing villages. They never tried to stop him though, not that Kakashi was sure they would have been able too if they tried.

Looking back now though maybe they should have. Maybe they should have stopped him or at least tried to get him to choose his battles a little more wisely. Maybe if they had they wouldn't be where they were now. Maybe they would still be their little happy family of three or possibly even more.

Unlike the memory of the day that they had been blessed with Kurama which Kakashi happily reveled in, the day of his death was one that he would rather forget, but knew he never would.

The two finished up their shower, Kakashi getting dressed in casual clothes so that he could go out with Iruka while the wolf hunted. They had chosen an area near the edge of town for this exact reason. Their apartment backed up to the edge of a small wooded area that seemed to be abundant with small woodland creatures. Kakashi walked slowly as Iruka took off to hunt for himself.

Kakashi listened to the wolf as he quietly made his way through the underbrush searching for the bedded down creatures. He walked in the direction of the small playground that was also out here for any children that happened to live in the apartments. It was late enough however that there should be none out.

As he made his way over he suddenly realized that he could no longer hear his mate. He stopped amongst a small copse of trees to listen more carefully. He heard a yelp followed by a loud growl and took off in that direction. Not too far away from where he had stopped was a pale man holding Iruka by his throat. Kakashi froze, taking in the situation. Iruka didn't seem to be panicked at all. Kakashi wasn't sure how to take that, though he was also confused by the fact that Iruaka hadn't gotten himself free, he was more than capable of defending himself. Kakashi could smell salt from where he was and saw the shine in Iruka's eyes, he was crying…but he was smiling?

Kakashi could tell that the man had not noticed him yet, so taking the advantage that he had, he snick up behind him pulling out the dagger that he usually kept on himself and held it up to the mans throat.

"I would put him down if I were you" he kept his voice low and calm not taking his eyes off of his mate.

Iruka looked at him and smiled even wider.

"Kakashi! He's here! I-I found him!" Kakashi tensed up at those words. There was only one person that Iruka could be talking about. He tightened his hand around the dagger not letting his control slip.

"Put him down" Kakashi pushed the dagger against the mans throat lightly, to the point that it should have drawn blood.

He noticed that it did not on this man. Kakashi narrowed his eyes and took a deep breath. A blood vampire. Well this was just getting better. Why was he here and what did he want with Iruka? They usually kept to themselves, they'd hunt and then go back to their dens. Wait was he hunting?

Knowing now that he wouldn't kill the man in front of him Kakashi pushed the dagger in further. It wouldn't kill the vampire, but it would burn and cause discomfort.

The vampire hissed and dropped Iruka bringing his hands up to try and dislodge the dagger from his neck. Kakashi was faster and dropped the vampire to the ground pinning him.

"What are you doing here? Were you hunting?" The man under him turned his head and Kakashi could see that the vampire was young. He sighed to himself and got up off the blood vampire, hauling him up by the back of his shirt.

The vampire stayed silent only eyeing the two of them. Kakashi just knew that he wasn't going to get anywhere with him. He looked over to Iruka, who was staring off to his right, the smile still on his face.

Right, Iruka had said that he was here. That he'd found him.

Kakashi let the vampire go and walked over to his mate.

"Iruka? Are you sure?" He asked a little skeptical , they'd been searching for so long it was hard to believe.

Iruka turned his head towards him, his smile turning into a slight frown.

"Of course I'm sure! I would be able to recognize him anywhere Kakashi!" Kakashi threw up his hands in surrender, and was about to assure Iruka that he did in fact believe him when he heard it-

"Whose out there?" the voice was as loud as the fumbling steps that were marching through the trees.

"I've got a weapon! Don't mess with me!" Kakashi's eyes went wide. That voice could it truly be? He looked to Iruka again, that smile back on his face wider than ever. Kakashi noticed that Iruka was trembling. When he looked over too where all the noise was coming from, his breathing stopped. There he was.
