Whatcha Listening To?

Summary:

Upon finding Senku in class with a pair of earphones in, Kohaku can't help but be curious what he's listening to...

Flufftober 2025: Sharing Earphones

Work Text:

"Hey Senku! Good morning!" Kohaku cheerfully greeted her friend as she plopped in a seat next to her friend in class that morning.

She frowned when Senku didn't return the greeting and simply just sat there with his eyes closed and head resting in his hand.

She was about to scold him for his rudeness when she noticed a thin white cable from his phone on the desk going up both sides of his head realising he wasn't being rude, but probably hadn't even heard her thanks to the earphones he had in.

It got her curious what he might be listening to however as he never talked about or even showed any interest in music.

"Hey, Senku!" she greeted again as she pulled on one ear out to get his attention properly this time.

"Hey there, Lioness. You need anything? Don't tell me you forgot to do homework again and need my help speed-running it again before class starts." Senku cracked an eye open at her.

"Ugh! How come you right away assume I need help with homework?! Also, I'm not a lioness!" she yelled, annoyed at both the assumption as well as the stupid nickname he had given her after she beat up several of his bullies years ago.

"I also just told you good morning." she gave him a pointed look and he snorted.

"Good morning, Kohaku." he drawled like with a smirk, making her roll her eyes.

"Say, mind giving me that back? I was kinda wanted to listen to that before class starts." he then told her, reminding her that she was still holding one of his earphones.

"Oh, I was actually curious about that. Whatcha listening to?" she asked, scooting closer and putting the single earphone in her own ear.

"Natural tungsten is not found in its pure metallic form but as a component of minerals like scheelite and wolframite. Major deposits are concentrated in China, which accounts for the majority of world production, followed by other significant producers such as-"

"Ugh!" Kohaku threw her head back in exaspiration because of course he was listening to some sort of science pod-cast or something.

"Really, Senku. Don't you ever think about anything other than science? And here I thought you might be listening to music like a normal teenage boy." she said.

"Okay, two things," Senku held up two fingers, "One, you know science is pretty damn usefull in literally everything-" "Knowing where to find some random rock is gonna be useful? You're worse than Chrome with your joint obsession over rocks having never gone away." she interrupted skeptically.

"Hey, tungsten could be used to for lots of things. Did you know that light bulb filaments are made from tungsten? Ah, never mind that." she was glad Senku seemed willing enough to go back to their original topic and she wasn't subjected to one of his ongoing lectures that could take hours on end because as endearing as he was with how excited he could get during those, there were so boring. How Yuzuriha once managed to sit through a five-hour talk about rockets and pay attention the whole time was beyond her.

"Anyway, I listen to music sometimes. You know I do." he gave her a pointed look.

"Yes, to Lillian Weinberg and yes, me, you and everyone who's ever heard her voice agrees she's amazing, but I also know that if your dad hadn't met her personally and insisted on it, you'd never have given her music a chance, even if you like it now." she gave her own pointed look back.

"Alright, fair enough." he gave in and started fiddling with his phone, "Here, I've got a special song here that never fails to make me think of you."

Kohaku was glad he was too busy searching for whatever song he was talking about to notice her face getting hot and probably red at the idea that he'd think about her at any time when just hearing a song.

"Found it!" Senku grinned triumphantly, snapping her back to attention.

"O-Oh right! Well, let's hear it!" she grinned back, doing her best to look playful as she forced herself to calm down.

She frowned when her sharp eye noticed the light, almost unnoticable shake of his shoulders and was about to ask if he was alright when he pressed 'play'.

"Wee-hee-hee-hee, dee hee-hee-hee-hee~ Wee-oh aweem away~" her eyes went wide as she recognised a familiar tune starting and being repeated a few times.

"You didn't!" she hissed at the boy next to her who was struggling more to hide his supressed laughter.

"In the jungle, the mighty jungle~ The lion sleeps tonight~ In the jungle, the quiet jungle~ The lion sleeps tonight (ho, ho)~"

"Ugh! You are such an asshole sometimes!" Kohaku cried out as Senku now openly laughed, apparently finding himself hilarious.

"Hey come on, it's practically your theme-song! I've been contemplating making it my ringtone for you, but then Ryusei would be hounding me for his own and then Taiju would want me to give everyone one." Senku told her, wiping away a tear.

"Oh yeah, well here's your theme-song!" she snapped, snatching his phone and quickly searching up what she wanted.

"Okay, let's hear it." Senku smirkes, not worried at all.

Shotting back her own smirk she pressed 'play'.

"We're going on a trip, in our favorite rocket ship~ Zooming trough the skies, Little Einsteins~!"

Kohaku was now the one laughing as Senku's formerly smug face morphed into one of horror.

"I- You- Kohaku!" she watched him struggle to say something before finally just flopping forward and face-planting into the desk.

This of course only made her laugh harder.

"Yeah, yeah, I deserved that one." Senku sighed, digging in his ear with his pinky.

They then both looked at each other and promptly burst into another fit of giggles together.

"But I gotta admit, this would have been a good theme-song for me back when I was six myself." he admitted.

"Yeah, and I guess what you just did earlier was kinda funny. But only kinda!" she flicked him on the nose, making him snort.

"Hey, I'll take whatever I can." he shrugged, making her snort again.

"So now what? You gonna go back to your boring science talking again before class starts in... fifteen minutes?" she asked, sparing a quick glance at the clock on the wall and handing the single earphone she'd taken for herself.

"Actually..." Senku drawled as he handed it back to her, surprising her.

"I was thinking I might as well listen to one or two of Lillian Weinberg's songs. Care to join me, Lioness? You did say we and everyone who's ever heard her agree she's amaznig after all." he offered with a smirk.

"Yeah, sure. Why not?" Kohaku agreed, smiling back and accepting and putting in the earphone.

She watched Senku fiddle with his phone again for a moment before music started playing again and Lillian's beautiful voice sounded.

"Nowhere to turn~ Nowhere to hide~"

As she listened Kohaku stole a glance at Senku again, finding him with his eyes closed and head resting in his hand just like she found him earlier, but now with a more content smile on his lips.

Without a real reason she found herself scooting even closer till she was able to lean her head against his shoulder.

Just as she was sure he'd shrug her off, she was surprised again when she felt him lean his own head on top of hers.

She blinked for a couple times before settling down and relaxing against him, closing her own eyes as well.

For now she'd just spend this moment enjoying it with him.
