Chapter 1: First encounter

Chapter Text

It had been another boring, lonely night in your new apartment. As a brand new adult, living on your own wasn’t exactly the adventure you thought it would be. It was filled mostly with quiet, restless evenings scrolling aimlessly online. That’s how you ended up on Tumblr, where between memes and rambling posts you stumbled on something ridiculous: a ritual to summon a fictional character into your world.

You rolled your eyes, of course. Stupid. Fake. The kind of thing you’d normally keep scrolling past. But boredom was a powerful motivator, and, conveniently, you already had everything the post listed. Candles, chalk, a lighter. So why not? With nothing else to do, you went through the steps, whispering the name of the one character you secretly wished could cross over: Kurt Wagner.

Nothing happened, just as you’d expected. With a frustrated sigh, you blew out the candles, irritated with yourself for even bothering to try, and headed off to bed. Hours later, a loud crash jolted you awake.

Groggy but alert, you pushed out of bed, padding carefully towards the sound. You make sure to arm yourself with a fake sword to hopefully scare whatever threat was waiting for you.

The living room was dark, the only thing lightning being the streetlamps outside of your windows. Shadows stretched across the floor as you turn the corner. “Who’s there?” You call out in fear, plastic weapon raised and pointed. It’s not until you reach into your pocket, pulling out your phone and turning on its flashlight, that you see him. Kurt Wagner. Kurt fucking Wagner.

He was real, and standing in your apartment. His blue skin catches the harsh phone light, tail whipping nervously behind him as he crouches beside the remains of your shattered lamp. His eyes. Those glowing, unmistakable golden eyes. flicked up to yours, wide with shock and confusion. His chest rose and fell too quickly, as if he’d been dropped here without warning. He muttered something hurried in German under his breath, ears twitching before he managed in accented English, voice unsteady: “Mein Gott… where am I? Who are you?” He questioned. He looked torn between fight and flight, his gaze locking on you as if he could decide which to choose just by looking at you.

You, however, choose both and chuck the prop at him as you run back to your bedroom screaming.

Kurt dodges the flying projectile before turning his gaze back on you as you bolt, confusion and panic still evident in the upturn of his eyebrows. “Wait-!” He calls out, voice filled with urgency. “Come back, Bitte!’ He goes to follow you but is met with a door to the face as you slam it shut.

On the other side of the locked entrance, you slump down to the floor, bringing your knees up to your chest and covering your ears with your hands. “This isn’t real, this isn’t real…” You repeatedly mumble to yourself, rocking back and forth on the floor. “I’m- hallucinating! I’m hallucinating, the self isolation has gotten to me.” You continue, shoulders lifted into a helpless shrug.

Kurt furrowed his brows in confusion at the muffled words coming from inside the room, not quite understanding what exactly you were rambling and ranting about. Sure, having a random person appear in your home has to be alarming. But hallucinations? That seemed to be an absurd conclusion to come to, at least he thought so. Personally, his mind would have went to burglary as his first guess. "What are you going on about? You’re acting as if you’ve never seen a mutant before.” Kurt forced a humorous tone into his voice, trying to defuse the situation.

“That’s because I haven’t!’ You hiss at him through gritted teeth, still panicking. “Those don’t fucking exist here!”

Kurt’s eyes widen at your words, utter disbelief on his face. Maybe you were crazy. "You…how haven’t-? He shook his head, trying to make sense of what you just said. “How have you not seen a mutant? There are- at least 8 billion people in the world, and you haven’t met one mutant? He took a step back from the door, staring at it with a frown. "Where exactly am I?” He asks.

With a shaky sigh, your brain gives up on trying to rationalize what’s happening. You slowly rise to your feet, opening the door just enough to stick your head out.

“The real world, Kurt, The real world.”
