In the dim lighting, Bradley could just barely make out this…this almost apologetic, fearful expression etched into the fibers of Jake's face.
Bradley wasn’t quite sure what that had to do with him, though he wasn’t left in the dark for long as Jake continued.
“Would you mind if I wrote about the ugliness of deployment and sent the letters to you? Give me someone I can be honest with while out there?”
Bradley Bradshaw sat frozen on the top of that picnic table, eyes wide and lips pressed together as he took his sweet time processing what’d just been asked of him.
For just a moment, the ocean seemed to speak strictly for them, the waves crashing repeatedly against the shore, rhythmic and holding the space for the two of them.
His chest felt heavy; he couldn’t put a pin in why, but it was. Shock? Fear maybe…But then, was it confusion, maybe? Why him? They’d just met, not even an hour ago, so why would he rather write about the horrors of being shipped out to a stranger? Wouldn’t he rather find a trusted friend or–
