“What the hell did you do, Michael?”
Michael blinked at him, startled.
“Cuz I was dead.” David’s voice sharpened. “We were dead. Burned, staked, drowned. And now…” He gestured around them — the neon, the crowd, the same night replaying itself. “We’re standing here like none of it ever happened. So, tell me, what the hell did you do?”
Michael’s mouth opened, but no sound came out. His heartbeat thundered in his ears.
“I—I don’t…” he stammered, backing up a half-step. “I don’t know, David, I just.......I rode out to the hotel....I screamed until my throat bled. I told you I was sorry. I begged you to forgive me.” His fingers shook as he spoke, his eyes glassy. “And then…Everything went dark, and when I woke up.....I was in the car again. Back at the start. Like none of it happened.”
The silence that followed was heavy, drawn tight.
Paul exhaled slowly. “So… you wished us back?”
“I didn’t mean to!” Michael said quickly. “I didn’t even know I could!"
