Summary:

Sam doesn’t sleep. He can’t sleep. How is he meant to sleep when Dean didn’t pick up the phone when he always picks up the phone for Sam? He can’t sleep so he doesn’t try. He stands by the counter and waits.

What if Dean’s dead?

He waits.

What if Dean’s dead?

He waits.

What if Dean’s dead?

He waits.

What if Dean’s dead?

Work Text:

What if Dean’s dead?

Sam’s doing his schoolwork. He’s reading an old case. He’s studying.

What if Dean’s dead?

He’s fine. Dean is fine. Dean is not dead.

What if Dean’s dead?

Sam knows Dean isn’t dead because Dean won’t die. He’s too strong to die. Too voracious. Too much of a thirst for demon blood to die young.

What if Dean’s dead?

Sam’s talking to Jess. Asking her out. She’s really pretty, nice to him even though he’s a bit odd. He knows Dean isn’t dead because Dean won’t die and if Dean were dead John would find him.

What if Dean’s dead? (What if John finds him?)

Sam and Jess eat lasagna on their first date at a kistchy diner. Sam says it reminds him of being a kid. Jess says they have the best lasagna on the outskirts of the city

What if Dean’s dead? (What if John finds him?)

They move in together after the third month of dating. It’s nice not being alone again.

What if Dean’s dead?

Sam wakes up in a cold sweat. Dean’s dead in his dream. Soul sold and torn to shreds by the fabled hellhounds. Corpse eviscerated. Sam watched it happen.

What if Dean’s dead?

It’s not real. Jess is beside him. Sleeping softly.

What if Dean’s dead?

It’s not real. The phones aren’t ringing to tell him the bad news. The kitchen light is on.

What if Dean’s dead?

It’s not real. He’s still shakily typing in the number of Dean’s phone even though it’s late and he knows Dean is out cold at this hour. Unless Dean’s dead. Which he isn’t. Dean’s not dead.

What if Dean’s dead?

The phone rings.

And rings.

And rings.

And rings.

And rings.

Answering machine.

That doesn’t mean Dean’s dead.

What if Dean’s dead?

Sam doesn’t sleep. He can’t sleep. How is he meant to sleep when Dean didn’t pick up the phone when he always picks up the phone for Sam? He can’t sleep so he doesn’t try. He stands by the counter and waits.

What if Dean’s dead?

He waits.

What if Dean’s dead?

He waits.

What if Dean’s dead?

He waits.

What if Dean’s dead?

The sun is starting to rise. He’s had three mugs of chai. He’s already gotten dressed. Jess is still asleep.

What if Dean’s dead?

The phone rings. Sam answers too quick. Sounds too relieved. Tension visibly drops from his shoulders as he blathers, trying to keep quiet.

It’s John.

What if Dean’s dead and you never find out?
