Work Text:
From way up high, Ketterdam really could be beautiful.
Inej sat and admired the nighttime view. It tended to be hard to see the stars at night, something she often missed from back home. But Ketterdam had its own way of calling to her, despite it all.
One of those things appeared behind her, as Kaz slipped through a hidden door on the top of the Church spire.
“Saints, I always forget how high up this is.” He declared, eyebrow ever so slightly quirked in concern as he took in the view of Inej sitting with her legs dangling off the edge.
“I see you got my note.” Inej patted the spot next to her.
He sat close, but Inej scooted even closer, resting a head on his shoulder and forcing him to put an arm around her.
“Can I help you with anything this fine evening, dear?” Kaz laughed a little as Inej snuggled closer.
“I just thought it might be nice to get away,” she said innocently.
“Surely our rooms would’ve been less of a hassle.”
“Mm, but here no one will disturb us.” Inej felt herself starting to blush, but pressed on, “No distractions.”
“No one except the birds, maybe,” Kaz’s fingers fiddled with her hair as he pondered “what did you have in mind?”
His gaze slid to her face, surely taking note of the warmth in her cheeks and lingering on the way she was ever so slightly biting her bottom lip.
“I think I’d rather just show you.”
He laughed as she pulled his face greedily to her own.
Yes. Inej did sneak a note into Kaz’s pocket just to steal him away and kiss him senseless at the highest spot in Ketterdam. She had done worse things in her life than distract Kaz from whatever scheme he was cooking up next. Ghenzen forgive she wanted romance every once in a while.
Inej liked kissing Kaz, especially like this. On her own terms, in a place she was comfortable, it thrilled her. Their lips moved together, exploring and opening ever so gently. Kaz always followed her lead, never pushing past the precedents she set.
Often, Inej found herself moving Kaz’s hands for him, encouraging him to touch her even more. It emboldened her, she wanted him and loved the effect she had on him.
Tonight, Kaz’s lips were even more inviting than usual, with the crisp air biting at her. Her body tingled, leaving her wanting to melt into him. Inej ran her hands along his back, pulled at Kaz’s hair, savoring every gasp that she could elicit from his lips. She felt powerful, to bring the collected and calculated man down from his high horse and mold him like putty in her hands.
Inej’s fingers had just started to fiddle with the pesky buttons around his neck when Kaz made a sound.
Abruptly, Kaz pulled back from her. Immediately she missed the warmth of his lips. Inej blinked in confusion, looking up at him expecting to see him fighting away his demons. Worried she had gone too far too quickly, Inej searched his face, beginning to pull away when he pulled her back in reassuringly.
Instead, she saw the smile on his kiss bruised lips and his eyebrows scrunched together. Kaz’s eyes were screwed shut and he pressed his forehead down against Inej’s as she waited for her brain to catch up to what was happening.
He swayed lightly against her and Inej clutched at his shirt tightly.
“My love?” She whispered, “Are you okay?”
“Yes,” He said shakily, “just need to catch my breath is all.”
“Kaz Brekker,” Inej laughed, throwing her head back, “if you fall off this building because you faint from kissing me, it is not my fault!”
“You’re a stone cold killer, Inej Ghafa.” Kaz said with eyes looking at her so softly she could almost forget how hard they had worked to get to this moment.
“Well, let me get back to work then,” Inej pulled him in, voice dancing on his lips, so close that she could almost feel him smile.
“Gladly.”
