Hand in hand

Summary:

Marinette's life was anything but perfect. She was a part-time superhero, a vessel for a god, she was best friends with her crush, she finally got all of her friends back, and now she was receiving love letters in her locker.

Now, her life was ruined.

Marinette really wished she hadn't received those love letters.

Notes:

Hi guys. This story is probably about halfway done at the point I am posting this first chapter? It is sitting at 26.5k words in my doc. This also means I am finally to the original plot of the story.

I don't plan on uploading everything at once so I don't burn out and then go at my own pace. So if I don't update for a while, I'm probably procrastinating.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Chapter Text

Everything in Marinette's life was unnecessarily complicated. From dealing with her school life, lying to her friends daily, being Ladybug, and the godly magic that ran through her veins - she couldn't catch a break. It was tiring and she wished that for once nothing would make her life difficult.

But it was just her luck that the universe wanted to play more cruel jokes on her.

Marinette stood in front of her locker with a pink piece of cardstock in her hand. Simple and neat handwriting she didn't recognize was scrawled across the paper. The lines were light and practiced.

If the stars would align in my favor, I would hold your hand and show you them.

The simple expression of affection didn't make much sense to Marinette. She was one to love poetry and appreciate confessions, but this wasn't the first or most clever note she had received. In fact, it was the tenth note.

Lately, Marinette had been receiving notes in her locker and gifts at her desk. Marinette could tell they were from two separate people. She knew this because the only note on the gifts had a completely different handwriting compared to the notes; it was too perfect for them to be the note giver.

At first she loved them. It felt nice to receive something, but she only expected one or two. The notes started first and then it seemed like the gift giver had it out to show more affection. It didn’t seem like they would last this long, but they did.

It was starting to creep her out if she was being honest.

“Did you get another note?” Alya appeared next to Marinette, peering over her shoulder to read it. “Well… that's unoriginal.”

“Sadly I did.” Marinette crunched the note easily in her hand. She ignored how the cardstock felt uncomfortable as the sharp folds dug into her skin. “I don't understand why they won't just talk to me.”

“Maybe they're shy.” Alya shrugged and glanced around the locker room to see if anyone was watching. “I still think you should tell the teachers. This feels like stalking.”

“And tell them what? I've thrown all but the first two notes away and that I have been sitting by as two people fight for my affection?” Marinette looked up to Alya with a frown. “I don't want them to get in trouble, Als. I just want them to stop.”

“Then maybe cover the vents in your locker and leave a note on your desk?” Alya met her eyes then looked away again to watch their classmates. “I don't understand why you keep letting it happen.”

“I already told you.” Marinette shoved the crumpled note into her pocket to throw away later and shut her locker. “Besides, I don't think they'll do anything drastic."

“You say that now…” Alya trailed off.

Marinette sighed and turned away. The two walked to class together as a comfortable silence followed them. Marinette could feel Alya at her side and it gave her comfort that her friend stood close by. Even when they were quiet, Marinette could feel her friends from the years of Ladybug connecting Marinette to everyone around her. It was a blessing and a curse that she carried amongst other things.

Marinette pushed open the classroom door to see some of their classmates huddled around her desk. They were quietly talking and motioning towards her desk. Marinette's skin crawled as she saw them turn to look at her, fear in their eyes.

“What's wrong?” Marinette stepped into the classroom and the feeling of her friends’ distress clung to her skin.

She glanced at Lila and Chloe, who sat in their seats quietly watching. Chloe's face was drawn into a small frown while Lila looked lightly interested. Marinette turned back to their classmates and saw Adrien standing at her desk, his fingertips touching it lightly as he looked up at her.

“Someone left you a note.” Alix spoke up first. Marinette's attention snapped away from Adrien and back to the group as she walked up the stairs.

“It isn't the person who leaves you gifts.” Rose looked almost scared.

This made Marinette feel uneasy as she approached her desk. She cursed the fact that she was put at the back of the room with Alya during the last time Lila threw one of her tantrums over seating. It always made her anxiety spike when she had something waiting for her in the back.

Marinette stopped at her desk and looked down to see a white note card, the type you would use to study, on her desk. In big blocky words, written in black sharpie, was a simple message.

I know your secret. I know who you are.

Marinette felt like someone dumped a bucket of ice water over her. Her lips parted as she stared at the card. Her hands started to tremble as she picked it up.

Someone had found her out. They knew she was Ladybug and had openly come after her.

“What does it mean?” Juleka asked softly.

“Marinette?” Alya sounded concerned.

Marinette felt the stabbing fear again and she jolted to rip up the card. It seemed to take the others by surprise and they flinched. Marinette managed to rip it up as small as she could before marching down the steps and to the trashcan. She stared at the ripped up note card in her hand before dropping it into the trashcan. She stood there for a moment, her body shaking and her throat closed up.

Marinette turned to face her classmates, taking in their concerned faces. She opened her mouth to speak but the words died in her throat as her lips trembled.

She was scared. After four years of carefully going about her life she was found out. She never knew that someone would be able to catch on and outright approach her. Not publicly.

“I-” Marinette tried but the air in her lungs felt stale. “I don't know what that's about. I don't have any secrets or anything to hide. I don't know why someone would leave me this.”

“Aren't you already getting notes and gifts?” Nathaniel asked from the front of the group. “What if someone found out who it is and they’re trying to scare you? They see you as competition since you're basically perfect and want to tear you down?”

“Maybe they found out you're not perfect?” Max chimed in.

“I'm not perfect, though.” Marinette knew she wasn't. She knew that it was talking about Ladybug, who definitely was better than boring Marinette. “I'm clumsy and make mistakes. I'm obsessive and overwork myself.”

“Then they don't know you well.” Nino tried to comfort her. “It just means that they'll give up after they realize that you didn't do anything wrong, dudette.”

“Marinette…” Alya stepped towards her. “You really need to tell the teachers.”

“No, I can handle it. It'll all pass and all of them will give up once they realize I don't reciprocate or want anything to do with it!” Marinette took a deep breath, curling her hands into fists. “I just… need to be normal.”

“Mari…” Alya started again.

“I'm fine.” Marinette cut her off. “Please don't worry. I can handle myself and I don't have time to worry about these things.”

The class stared at her and Marinette felt her nerves crawl up her back. She wanted them to stop staring and let it go. She was a superhero and could protect herself, even if they didn't know that. Marinette's eyes drifted back over to Lila, taking in her look. Her face looked as if she was studying Marinette. Lila looked back to their classmates and started to open her mouth. Thankfully, Chloe caught this and spoke up.

“Either this is some sick prank or we need to keep an eye out for someone watching her.” Chloe inspected her nails without looking up. “I don't care for Dupain-Cheng, but this could cause problems for all of us.”

The class murmured in agreement and Marinette felt like screaming. Yes, she was terrified. But this doesn't mean she needed to be babied. She appreciated her classmates and it made her happy that they'd jump to protect her after the chaos from Lila calmed down. It still put them all in danger if the person got brave and outed her in the notes.

“I'll handle it. Have faith in me.” Marinette forced a smile that she hoped didn't look too fake. “I'm sure that whatever they think they have on me is harmless and it's just to stir up trouble. Not everyone can like me.”

This seemed to be accepted for the most part from their classmates as they moved back to their seats. Their sights stayed on Marinette as she moved up to her seat. Alya was quiet as she sagged into her seat. Marinette felt Alya’s hand find her back and slowly run it.

Marinette sighed and put her face into her hands. This was ought to pass and they couldn't keep this up easily without getting caught. She swore by it. If she had to bend luck with her powers then so be it.

Marinette wasn't known for always being right.

She got to school early for once, reading the love note that was cheesy before going to class. Eyes were on her again and Marinette felt nervous as she approached her desk. Automatically she noticed another note card and automatically understood their stares.

Aren't you tired? Failing over and over again and lying to everyone. Wouldn't you feel better if you didn't have to wear a facade?

Marinette didn't feel ice cold fear this time. She automatically crumpled it and stomped down the stairs. She threw the crumpled card into the trashcan a bit too hard before going back up to her desk.

This was obnoxious. This one was taunting her. They clearly knew she was Ladybug and were too much of a coward. The loving press of Tiki on her side did not help the fire in her veins. Yes, she was worried. She had been on edge for the last few days. It was just that she wanted them to confront her.

“Girl, you need to tell the teachers.” Alya calmly told Marinette.

“And what? Tell them that someone is pretty much taunting and threatening me over a secret that I don't even know what it is?” Marinette bit it out. “Why can't they just say it to my face?”

“Maybe they want to rile you up.” Alya shrugged. “Lying about something to see your reaction.”

Marinette didn't miss the glance towards Lila. The lying disease claim had hit the class hard. They knew not to fully trust her but still liked her. It's what mended their relationships with her. Alya wasn't to be trusted still, sadly.

“It's still petty.” Marinette yanked her textbook out of her bag. “I could handle the gifts and love notes. But threatening?”

“I stand by what I said.” Alya turned away, seemingly wanting to let Marinette calm down. Marinette appreciated it.

Marinette sat on one of the many roofs in Paris, staring into the distance. It was her turn for daytime patrol and she wanted to let her mind wander.

Her emotions had been too much over the last few days. The energy and blood of the gods burned with the emotions, twisting and turning her veins. She could feel power build and burn underneath her human skin that kept it trapped. As Ladybug it made her feel better. She was stripped down to her godly vessel that Tikki fused with her to create. She couldn't explain to others how she felt safe in her own skin as Ladybug. She didn't feel human but herself. Her black eyes and her iridescent wings were free, which stopped her eyes and back from aching.

It made her worry slip away and relax normally. She was free to exist as she was shaped to be.

But it didn't stop her mind from drifting to her anonymous messengers. The gifts didn't show up whenever the note cards were placed on her desk and the love notes were neverending. The note cards taunted her and we're starting to get too specific and the love notes were slowly taking a dark undertone.

The gifts stayed the same, though. One day it would be chocolates she eyes while out with friends or just enough of the fabric she was going on about. There had been once or twice she had just received a rose or a necklace. They were rather sweet and never had a note. They felt safer than the other two.

Marinette shifted to lean on her hands as they planted behind her. She looked straight up as she kicked her feet. She just wanted a break from it all. It's not like she had done anything to get their attention or affection. She was just a normal girl as Marinette and was trying to get through school. Marinette also didn't know how the person taunting her found out. She got better at hiding it over the last three years.

“Whatever.” Marinette mumbled as she peered at the clouds.

At least as Ladybug she had a semblance of normalcy, which was weird to think about. Being Ladybug still made her stop and debate her life, don't get her wrong. It was too far from being normal; she was a child soldier groomed to fight someone who was two steps ahead even if she thwarted everything thrown at her. She should have never been given her miraculous and it took her everything to not snap at Master Fu. She respected the man for everything besides giving her the curse of becoming a godly vessel.

“Ladybug!” A voice called out and Marinette peered down to see Alya waving her hand. Seeing Alya was the one who cut through the silence made the annoyance a little bit less.

Alya and Ladybug's relationship became some sort of respected and comfortable thing. It was mutually beneficial to keep Alya at arm's length but informed. Whenever Alya was Rena Rouge she had an undying loyalty to Ladybug. Alya would blindly follow her as a shield to protect her in battle.

Marinette slid herself off the roof; her wings fluttering to help her land on the concrete.

“Alya.” Marinette nodded and tilted her head after. “How can I help you?”

Alya hesitated and this caught Marinette's attention. Alya almost never hesitated.

“My friend Marinette is receiving things from different people. At first it was love notes then it was gifts from someone else. It was harmless until someone started to leave her threats.” Alya explained to her. “She refuses to tell any adult and I don't know what to do.”

Marinette paused. She had no idea why Alya would approach Ladybug for this. There wasn't much that she could do for her civilian identity.

“Have you looked into it?” Marinette asked. “You're a journalist. You've proven that you investigate well. I'm sure you can look into this.”

“You're right.” Alya’s eyes glanced to the side. “I started to but I don't know what to do about the small bits I've found. I know who is leaving her gifts but I can't figure out the other two.”

This caught Marinette's attention. Her wings fluttered as a small reaction. Alya didn't seem to notice as she continued.

“The gifts are in good spirit. I know he doesn't know how to express his emotions towards her directly and he wants her to feel good about herself.” Alya explained, her hands moving as she spoke now. “I respect him and I know he won't hurt her. I'm trying to encourage him to start acting on it but he's just as hopeless as her when it comes to crushes.”

“Do you want to share who he is?” Marinette wanted to know badly.

“No. I respect him too much.” Alya shook her head with a strong frown. “I just want you to keep an eye out on Marinette. I think she's being stalked.”

That never occurred to Marinette. The note cards would make sense if she was being stalked. The idea that her love notes person was also following her made her stomach churn.

“I'll keep an eye out and tell Chat Noir to also keep an eye out.” Marinette gave a small smile. “Don't worry, Alya. If there is someone stalking her we'll see it.”

This seemingly made Alya feel better. Her posture softened and she looked relieved. It made Marinette feel bad that her friend was worrying this much about her. It was touching but formed a pit in her stomach.

“Thank you. I'm worried about her.” Alya sighed. She looked down the street and Marinette could see Nino waiting at the end of the street. “I should go.”

“You should. Can't keep him waiting too long.” Marinette beamed at Alya in her practiced Ladybug way.

“Of course.” Alya waved and started off towards Nino. Marinette waved back.

The second Alya was out of her sight Marinette’s shoulders deflated. She could feel the aching feeling of exhaustion in her bones underneath the buzzing in her skin. She needed to sleep when she got back home.

Marinette's yo-yo buzzed and Marinette got back onto the roof before pulling it out. She opened it to see a message from Chat Noir on the screen. Normally he wouldn't be transformed if it was her turn. It was rare unless he also couldn't stand the burning feeling of the godly energy in his skin.

I saw videos online of you looking lost. Want me to lend an ear?

Marinette smiled at the message and glanced around. Not a lot of civilians were on the street, but she could see one or two snap a picture of her and continue on their way. It wasn't uncommon that the people of Paris would post about superhero sightings. It was just a normal thing. The more fun ones update people whenever any of the heroes are sighted. It was more charming than Alya running into battle and the first year of her sticking her phone into their faces. It took Alya a while to learn boundaries.

I wouldn't mind. I was just told something a bit serious by our favorite teenage journalist. Meet at the Eiffel Tower?

Marinette sent the response and waited as the message sat on read for a minute. She received a thumbs up in response after a minute. She was used to the simple responses. He was probably already on the move.

Marinette threw her yo-yo and took off into the sky. She waved back when civilians waved up at her, flashing them her perfected smile. It didn't take her too long to get to their meeting spot; she always held a normal path that she had constructed over the years for efficiency. She knew Paris like the back of her hand and how to swing across it within minutes.

Chat Noir was standing on their regular beam when she got there. He watched her carefully as she landed on the other side. She recalled her yo-yo and put it on her waist again. Marinette looked up and met his uncertain eyes.

“What did Alya say?” Chat cut right to the chase.

“You know her friend Marinette? I know you have a friendship with her and have saved her a handful of times.” Marinette started, momentarily separating her two identities apart.

“Yeah. She's my only friend in costume that's a civilian.” Chat nodded and paused. “Which we both know isn't public information outside of us still. I know she hasn't told anyone.”

“I know. Me and her had a talk about it. Nice girl.” Marinette nodded and caught the way that Chat beamed at her praise.

“What's up with her, though? Alya said something to you so it must be important.” Chat tilted his head.

“Alya thinks she's being stalked.” Marinette came out and said it. She didn't want to dance around it. “She's been getting gifts and notes from two people. Alya said the guy giving her gifts is harmless and just likes her. But she's afraid the two messengers are stalking her friend.”

Chat’s smile turned into a tight lipped frown. His eyebrows furrowed and different emotions flickered across his face. His ears pressed back onto his hair and his tail whipped behind him. It was hard to read the emotions, but Marinette knew from experience that he wasn't happy and his possessive instinct was flaring up. The curse of the black cat Miraculous seeping into him had caused this to develop. He had voiced how hard it was in his day to day life to control it and Marinette could see he was trying to keep a hold on it.

“Why does she think that?” Chat asked and Marinette could tell he was trying to school his emotions with a practiced mask that was cracked already.

“The more problematic one is threatening her and claiming to know secret things about her. The other is love notes that are slowly getting more concerning.” Marinette explained. “Alya asked if we could keep an eye on the area around her house and where she frequents.”

“I can do it for nights.” Chat nodded and looked towards the city. “You know how days are for me…”

“I know.” Marinette hummed.

Marinette knew that Chat’s home life was rough. He told her that he was rich but it came at the price of an unloving and volatile home. He was lonely in the prison of his room half of the time and he had to learn to accept love outside of his only childhood friend. It broke her heart when he broke down crying after one bad day. His mother had died years ago and it was her anniversary at the time.

“Let me know if you see anything. I worry about her. She tells me things sometimes that concern me. I can't tell you because of privacy, but she's had it rough in school.” Chat admitted as he looked back to her.

“I get it. I've had the same problems.” Marinette but her lip and looked down.

Marinette doesn't admit it out loud at times, but the care Chat had for her was something she cherished. He protected her as a civilian and nurtured a respectful and loving friendship when she was Marinette and grew to set mutual boundaries with Ladybug after a long talk. Marinette knew he still loved Ladybug, but it wasn't a strong pursuit. More of soft comments and loving smiles that lingered when she helped victims.

“I know.” Chat mimicked her words.

Marinette looked out to Paris for a moment, taking in the currently peaceful sky, before looking back to Chat.

“I think you should get back. I'm sure your dad wouldn't appreciate you being gone.” Marinette smiled at Chat, who groaned.

“I have my job in an hour but I'm sure he's going to send my babysitters to bother me soon.” Chat made a face that looked like a mix of disgust and defeat. He had taken up calling the staff who tended to him babysitters. It was rather amusing.

“Well, get to it alley cat. I'll see you tonight if Hawkmoth doesn't want to mess with us until then.” Marinette let out a small laugh and he shot her a look.

“Yeah, yeah. See you, LB.” Chat stuck out his tongue before taking off.

Marinette laughed more as she watched his figure disappear. She shook her head and checked the time, which told her it was nearing the end of patrol. She told her parents she was at the library studying so she had to go grab her bag from her hiding place and get home.

Marinette tossed her yo-yo out and jumped off the tower, soaring and swinging away.

Marinette gripped her backpack strap with one hand as she pushed the bakery door open. She could see her mom cleaning up the counter with a smile before looking up.

“Hi Maman.” Marinette waved as she made her way to the counter.

“Hi Marinette. How was studying?” Her mom paused her wiping to face her.

“Boring.” Marinette huffed. It wasn't a lie per se. Other than Alya and Chat, nothing happened. No akumas or non akumas activities happened.

“Well, what can you do?” Her mom responded before leaning to the register. She pulled out a soft pink envelope and held it out to her. Marinette could see her name in a familiar handwriting on the front. “A customer found it wedged in the front door. It has your name on it so I didn't open it.”

Marinette knew what it was. It was the love letter handwriting and she could see how neat the envelope looked. Marinette felt dread crawl up her spine as she remembered Alya's warning to Ladybug. The stalking and worry. Marinette reached out and took it.

“A kid from school probably just left it here because they knew I wasn't home. I wasn't on my phone so I probably missed their message asking where I was.” Marinette flashed a fake smile as she lightly gripped the envelope in both hands. “Thanks for taking it, Maman.”

“Of course! And let them know they can just give it to me next time. No need to leave it in the door. Someone might take it.” Her mom went back to wiping the counter clean from crumbs.

“Mmhm! I will! Bye!” Marinette cut the interaction short by turning and practically running into their home. She was glad her dad wasn't in the common space as she sprinted up the stairs two at a time and practically flung herself up her ladder. She made sure to not slam her trap door as she landed in the middle of her floor. The dread was making the energy of the gods pulse loudly and burn.

“Marinette?” Tikki softly spoke as she flew into sight. “You need to breathe.”

“I know.” Marinette nodded and took a deep breath. “Alya was right. I didn't expect it to happen this quickly.”

“You can't predict everyone's moves. Your luck can only go so far.” Tikki reasoned.

“I know.” It was her only reply before Marinette practically ripped the envelope open.

The same cardstock was inside with the same writing. This time though it held more words.

I need you to see me for who I am. Every day that you don't notice me outside of my confessions is another day that hurts. I keep getting closer and closer but it feels like I am invisible to you. I wonder if this will make you see me. I'm tired of watching you from afar, Marinette.

“That's so creepy.” Marinette breathed out. “What does he even mean by this?”

“I don't know, but you need to tell someone. The school can help you and so can your parents. You can't shoulder this, Marinette.” Tikki landed in front of Marinette and looked up to her. “Someone knows you're Ladybug and this person is going to find out if he's watching you closely.”

“But what will they do? There's only so much and the police might not be of much use.” Marinette tried to reason. “Me and Chat are superheroes. I can handle myself and he can keep an eye out.”

Tikki looked ready to argue back but she just pressed her lips shut. Marinette knew Tikki was mostly right, but Marinette was also right.

“I'll fix it.” Marinette stood up and dropped the letter into the trash.

Moving to her desk, Marinette put her backpack down. Taking out her books to study, she noticed that her pencil pouch wasn't there. She started to dig through the bag and groaned when she couldn't find it. Another thing she probably dropped while in a rush or forgot in the classroom.

“I guess I'll have to find it tomorrow.” Marinette grumbled about it and turned to Tikki. “Is there a chance you saw me drop my pencil pouch?”

“I didn't see it after lunch.” Tikki shook her head. “I thought it was on your desk.”

“I definitely dropped it or it's inside the desk.” Marinette sighed and zipped her bag up. She moved it off the chair before sitting in it. “We'll look for it tomorrow.”

“It'll turn up.” Tikki flew next to Marinette and settled at the desk. Marinette's phone buzzed and Tikki read it out loud. “Alya asked if you want to go to the park with her, Nino, and Adrien after school on Tuesday.”

Marinette smiled at that. At least she had that to look forward to tomorrow. She could relax and enjoy her time with her friends.

“I'll respond later, but that sounds great.” Marinette kicked her feet slightly before pulling out her homework. For once, it would be done on time.

“Thanks for letting us use your place for the project, Adrien.” Marinette smiled as she glanced around the foyer of the Agreste mansion. Marinette and Adrien had a project for their literature class and Adrien had convinced his dad to let them do it at the mansion. “I know I’ve been here a few times but it's always cool to walk through here.”

The foyer had various pieces of art on display and it was kept clean. Marinette loved seeing them in the brief instances she was allowed to. They were beautiful, especially the large hand painted portrait of the Agreste family. The three looked happy and like an actual family. The only thing that hindered it was the haunting of Emile Agreste within the mansion. Her portrait was a reminder for everyone who passed by that Emile was gone. Adrien had talked about it many times in the past whenever he missed his mom more.

“Of course! You host a lot of projects at your house for everyone else so I thought it would be a nice change for you.” Adrien glanced back at Marinette from where he was walking ahead of her on the stairs. He had a soft look on his face. “Besides, I like having people over whenever I can.”

There was the gleam of loneliness shining through that Adrien showed at times. It made Marinette’s heart tighten whenever she saw it. She wanted desperately to fill that gap in his life with her and their friends. Adrien was one of the sweetest people she knew and he didn’t deserve what his life had handed him.

Marinette didn’t reply as the two reached the top of the stairs. Instead of taking them to Adrien’s room, Adrien directed them down the hallway. He stopped in front of one of the many doors and opened it to reveal what looked like a meeting room mixed with a workspace. There was a large conference-like table in the center of the room that had chairs surrounding it. The table was wooden and looked like it had been well used. Storage with doors lined the walls with smaller tables scattered with objects lined the walls.

“This is one of the rooms my dad used to use as a work station before he moved everything to his office. He had it repurposed to a meeting room for company figures. It is supposed to be a humble reminder to his employees that he built the brand from the ground up or something.” Adrien put his bag onto the table and started to pull things out from it. Marinette followed suit as she looked at the marks on the table. “After my mom disappeared he slowly moved away from using it. I think it has bad memories attached to it because my mom would stay up late with him as he worked into the night.”

“That’s romantic in a way.” Marinette slipped her sketchbook on top of the pile of schoolbooks. She needed it for part of the project. She noticed how Adrien had tilted his head at her and she looked up to him. “Having deep memories of your loved one who isn’t here anymore is important. Him holding important business meetings here is almost like having the support of her. Doing that while shying away feels like preserving a memory.”

Adrien looked impressed and like something had clicked in his head. Marinette wanted to know what he was thinking. Marinette knew that his relationship with his dad was something that wasn’t a simple thing. It was complex; more than neither Gabriel nor Adrien wanted to face and outsiders genuinely didn’t see.

“Do you think that’s why he treats me how he does?” Adrien looked back down to his books and spread them out. “He’s trying to preserve a memory of her and protect the last connection to his wife that he doesn’t want to lose?”

“It’s possible. I wouldn’t know unless I asked him.” Marinette felt bad now for saying it. Adrien looked like he was seeing his relationship with his dad in a new light. “I don’t think you should think about it too hard for now.”

“You’re right.” Adrien nodded and looked up with a practiced smile. “I can have this crisis once we’re done with the project.”

“Promise?” Marinette tried to lighten the mood.

“Of course.” It seemed to work as Adrien’s smile turned more genuine.

Marinette sat down across from Adrien and the two started to talk about the project. They were outlining what had to be done and divided the work. They knew that it wouldn’t be a hard project; dissecting Romeo and Juliette and talking about the time it was set in along with symbolism. Marinette’s focus was breaking down the visual aspects of the play and giving it period accurate touches. Adrien was more focused on the literary aspects and how details translated into modern culture through the period. It was going to be laborious but the two were good at their assigned areas. Marinette put her effort into designing outfits along with what materials would be appropriate. Time was slipping away as the two bounced their ideas and progress back and forth so they could reflect each other in the work.

Marinette missed the door opening and the soft click of it shutting due to her writing notes around a sketch of Juliette’s dress. Adrien didn’t notice either as he wrote notes of the choice of wording in one scene. It wasn’t until Marinette saw a shadow moving to stand behind her and to the side. She tensed up and her pencil hovered above the paper. Her nerves spiked up as she felt the electric presence of the person. It was an odd feeling and she didn’t want to look up so she continued to work until the person addressed her.

“That is an interesting choice of fabric.” The person spoke up and the two teenagers jumped slightly.

Marinette looked up to see Gabriel Agreste standing a respectable distance behind her. His face was rather passive as his attention turned to her. He looked older than the images had always portrayed him; more tired and like he had seen more things than normal people would. What almost surprised her was that he had smile lines on his face from the happiness he had expressed once upon a time.

“It’s a period accurate piece.” Marinette swallowed the lump in her throat and looked back to her sketches. “Their fabric was much more crude than ours.”

“But more functional than modern fabrics would be.” Gabriel held out his hand to point at a particular design. “If I am correct, this is Juliette. I suggest simplifying her dress slightly. They would have flair but not this much for the scene you are portraying.”

Marinette nodded as she looked at Gabriel’s hand. He had visible callouses from years of using his hands for his craft. They weren’t the type that would scratch against your skin but instead just have tough skin. On his ring finger was a simple silver band, also. It was beautiful with intricate swirls and patterns. The ring was clearly old but kept in peak condition with love and care. As quickly as Gabriel pointed to the drawing, his hand retracted.

“You’re right.” Marinette agreed and wrote a note next to the dress to fix it in the next draft. “Thank you, sir.”

“Of course.” Gabriel responded and turned to Adrien, who visibly straightened. “You have the best partner for this project. I expect that you two will get a perfect grade.”

“Yes, Father.” Adrien nodded almost robotically before he motioned to Marinette with a smile. “We work well together so there will be no problem.”

Gabriel hummed for a moment as he observed Adrien. It was almost as if the man was breaking down his own son and analyzing the parts. He seemed to find whatever he was looking for and was pleased with it. Gabriel turned back to Marinette.

“You are welcome to work on your project together here.” Gabriel nodded.

“Thank you, sir.” Marinette smiled at him and felt giddy at the man's invitation.

“Goodnight.” Gabriel told Marinette and Adrien before leaving the room. The door shut with a soft click, leaving the two teenagers alone.

Marinette and Adrien were quiet for a moment before Marinette let out an odd noise. She dramatically collapsed onto the table and pressed her face into her books.

“Have I told you that your dad is intimidating?” Marinette spoke into her book.

“Once or twice.” Adrien sounded amused as he poked her with his pencil. “You get used to it.

Marinette simply groaned into her book in response as Adrien laughed.

Late in the night, an akuma decided to strike. It interrupted Marinette's long needed sleep and was causing a ruckus all across the city. It was big enough to call in Alya, which Marinette had wanted to avoid originally.

Now, Rena and Marinette sat on a roof together as they watched the cure go through the city. Chat was off taking care of the victim and it gave time for the other two heroes to sit and watch the magic.

“Does it still amaze you to see the magic work?” Rena asked with a smile on her face. “It's still breathtaking for me.”

“Sometimes.” Marinette admitted as she watched the magic dissipate. She could feel the magic settle inside of her. “It's a part of me now so it's sort of soothing.”

Rena stared at Marinette for a moment, which made Marinette turn to look at Rena. Marinette took in how much Rena looked like a costume on Alya. It had been a while since Marinette looked like she was wearing a costume. Her suit had taken on normal features that made it more realistic on top of her features that were not human. Rena didn't have fox eyes like how Marinette had shiny fully black eyes and Chat's earthly green cat eyes. Rena’s ears were just pretend and she didn't even have a tail.

She looked like a teenager.

“It's part of you?” Rena asked slowly.

“This is off the record and doesn't leave this spot.” Marinette started, knowing that Alya was still the Ladyblogger in the end. “But I am a godly vessel. I am not human anymore and this has become my true form. All of my magic is one with me.”

“Chat Noir also?” Rena's eyes widened. “But you look human.”

“Yeah, he is too.” Marinette nodded. She envied Alya right now. “I can feel the power of my kwami all the time and being in my civilian form is like being trapped in a cage.”

Rena was looking at her with sad eyes. Marinette didn't want her to feel bad for something she didn't cause. Marinette was used to it but Alya wasn't.

“That sounds horrible.” Rena shook her head slightly. “And you can't tell anyone.”

“And I can't tell anyone.” Marinette confirmed.

The two fell quiet before they looked over the Parisian skyline. They sat like that for a little bit longer than needed.

“Dudes, I've been looking forward to relaxing all week. I'm glad you guys agreed.” Nino grinned as he starfished in the grass next to Alya.

“It's been a while since it's been just us four.” Alya agreed with her boyfriend.

The four of them had met up at the park and all brought snacks to share. They were relaxing and enjoying the sun and the quiet atmosphere of the park. The younger kids weren't out of school yet so it was the perfect time to do it.

Adrien was sitting close to Marinette, both of them looking through fashion magazines so Marinette could get ideas for an open ended commission she got from one of the models at Adrien’s last shoot. Apparently the girl saw her work online, thanks to Jagged Stone talking about her, and fangirled when Adrien mentioned he knew her. It was one of Marinette's first big commissions and she wanted it to be on brand for her but also fit model vibes.

“I've been so busy lately with my dad's company that I haven't had two seconds to do nothing. It's nice being out here.” Adrien smiled in response before knocking shoulders lightly with Marinette.

“It feels like our schedules are against us.” Marinette shook her head. “It sucks.”

“I feel you, girl.” Alya agreed.

As silence took over the group, Nino and Alya went back to relaxing while Adrien and Marinette silently pointed out outfits and circled the parts they liked.

After about ten minutes, Marinette pulled out her sketchbook to start on the design. Adrien let out a small oh before reaching into his bag. Marinette watched as he pulled out a small box.

“I know you've been stressed lately so I thought you'd like these.” Adrien held them towards Marinette, who took them. It was a box of fancy chocolates; a brand that cost a fortune and she had never had the opportunity to try. Adrien looked nervous as he stretched the back of his neck. “One of the photographers gave them to me but I'm not allowed to eat them. Normally I just let Gorilla and Nathalie take the small gifts, but they're normally not this nice. You seem to like chocolates so I thought of you.”

Marinette's mouth parted slightly as she stared at the box. Her eyes lifted up to Adrien as he rambled and her shocked expression turned into a huge smile. She felt the most happy as she had in the last few weeks. It made her skin prickle with energy.

“I love it! Thank you.” Marinette quickly spoke and moved one of her hands as she spoke. “I've been dying to try these for years but I don't have the money or the opportunity to. These are so hard to get if you don't have a ton of money or an in! I can't believe someone just gave them to you! Or that I even been gifted them!”

Adrien seemed elated by her rambling response. Marinette didn't even care about Alya and Nino's stares as she grabbed one of Adrien’s hands.

“This is one of the best gifts I've gotten! And I've received a ton of nice gifts recently!” Marinette squeezed his hand. “Thank you, Adrien!”

“Of course! You're one of my best friends and I wanted to show how much I appreciate and think of you!” Adrien looked natural and like his walls were fully down. He was exposed and opened up for the three of them to see past his picture ready exterior he had to keep up.

Marinette dropped his hand and squealed practically as she opened the box. She didn't dare to take any of them out, just looking at the delicate chocolates. Some had gold flaked on and she could see how good the quality of chocolate was. Her parents could only get their hands on chocolate that only came near this quality when it was specialty made orders that paid for it. It was genuinely a treat.

Marinette happily closed the box and took a deep breath. Her and Adrien proceeded to calm down and start working on the design. They flipped through the magazine and made notes of materials and multiple drafted ideas based off of them. She was so engulfed in their tiny world that she didn't notice someone walk up.

“Mari.” Alya's voice cut Marinette off mid sentence, making her look up to her friend. “Someone's trying to get your attention.”

“Oh.” Marinette quietly said as she looked up.

A boy about her age stood a couple of feet away from her. He looked nervous and unsure of himself. Marinette had seen him a couple of times in passing at school but she didn't know his name. He looked rather plain and like any other guy in their year; brown hair and eyes. Then she noticed her pencil case in his hand.

“Hello.” Marinette offered him her class president smile.

“Hi… I think Marinette? Right? People talk about you.” The guy responded, glancing at the others for confirmation that they didn't give. His eyes landed on Adrien and Marinette could have sworn something flickered across his face for a moment, but she just assumed it was because he had never interacted with Famous Model Adrien Agreste. Marinette felt bad for him.

“Yeah, that's me. How can I help you?” Marinette wanted him to take the initiative and be brave.

“You dropped your pencil case a few days ago and I couldn't catch you before you disappeared. I didn't find you between classes afterwards.” The guy held out her pencil case to her. “It sucks to lose things so I thought you'd want it back. It was slightly open when I picked it up so a pen or two might have fallen out.”

“I've been looking for it!” Marinette beamed as she reached up and took it. She brought it to her lap and felt it from the outside to make sure that it had at least most of the things in it. “Thank you…”

“Antoni.” The guy, Antoni, beamed. “I'm in the same grade.”

“Thanks, Antoni.” Marinette nodded. “I'll make sure to say hi in the halls.”

“Great.” This seemed to make Antoni happy as he shifted his weight. “I guess I'll see you around?”

“Of course.” Marinette waved at him. Antoni gave an awkward wave as he retreated.

The group was silent as they watched him leave. Marinette could see the other three exchange looks. She ignored it as she slipped her pencil case back into her backpack. She didn't miss how Tikki was frowning at her.

“So… that was weird.” Alya was the first to speak up.

“What?” Marinette frowned as she turned to Alya. “He was nice.”

“Dudette, he made a face at Adrien and ignored us practically.” Nino looked at her like it was obvious. “Also, he could have just left it in our classroom.”

“Maybe he wanted to just give it to me personally so he could make sure I got it.” Marinette shrugged.

“I don't like him.” Adrien cut through the conversation. “There's something wrong with him.”

Marinette turned to see Adrien looking in the direction Antoni went. Antoni had gone to sit with his own group that seemed to be in their own world. It confused Marinette why Adrien was suddenly acting like this.

“Yeah, he was awkward but he seemed nice.” Marinette tried to defend him.

“I don't know. He's weird and I'm not trusting random students approaching you. Mr. Stalker is still out there.” Alya pointed out.

“Don't forget the threatening person.” Nino pointed out.

“Exactly.” Alya crossed her arms.

“You guys are thinking too much about it.” Marinette rolled her eyes. “People are allowed to be nice. It isn't the first time it's happened.”

“Still.” Alya frowned.

Marinette and Alya stared at each other as if it was a battle. Marinette felt a flare of her godly vessel surge in her. She had the urge to tell Alya to back down; to control the fox in her that was barely there. Alya wasn't a vessel but Marinette knew the magic clung to her body like tar.

Alya was the first to look away.

Marinette shook her head as she went back to her designs. Adrien leaned closer and Marinette felt his chin lean softly on her shoulder. She smiled but didn't say anything.

She could get used to this.

Chapter 2

Summary:

As we fall, so does our hopes.

Chapter Text

Marinette stretched as she walked into the classroom. Lunch had just ended and she was ready for the day to end.

The day was dragging on and Lila had started to spout something about her mom bringing her home fancy chocolates. Marinette would give it to Lila, she did have chocolates today. The thing was that they weren't anything special. Pretty, yes, but more than baking quality chocolate with edible paint. Marinette did get entertainment from Chloe and Adrien sharing a look after looking at the chocolates. Of course the two rich kids in their class would recognize it like Marinette had.

Marinette walked up to her desk and slumped in her chair. She closed her eyes as she tilted her head back. She was exhausted on top of everything and had an ungodly craving for sweets. She ran out of the chocolates within a few days and now she was left with whatever she could get at home.

At least none of her three messengers left anything today.

“You good, girl?” Alya asked as she slid into the seat next to Marinette. Marinette opened one eye to look at Alya. The girl's normally down hair was pulled back into a half up half down.

“Your hair is different.” Marinette started then paused. “And I'm exhausted.”

“You need to sleep more.” Alya shot Marinette a look before looking at her desk. She slid her hand into their small compartment and pulled out a notebook that she kept in there. “Me and Nino are going to an art festival after school so I decided to put my hair up. It's a bit hot outside.”

Alya was right. It was hot today. It was making the students restless and Marinette could tell a lot of the students would be going to the pool or out.

“That's fun. Take a lot of pictures for me.” Marinette sat up and looked down to her own desk.

“Definitely. I heard some underground people are going to play. I wouldn't miss it for anything.” Alya grinned as she held her fists in front of her chest like she always did when she got excited. Then her expression shifted slightly. “Adrien was talking about how he wanted to go to this art gallery today. He doesn't have anyone to go with so he might not go. There is a section on historical fashion. Maybe you should ask if you can go!”

Marinette sputtered for a moment and her face went pink. She hadn't asked Adrien to go somewhere in a good bit. He always asked her before she could even ask. Marinette didn't even think she could ask to tag along.

“Are you sure?” Marinette's voice was slightly strained. “I'd be intruding.”

“I'm totally sure. He was debating on asking you but didn't know if you liked historical fashion specifically. I think it would make his day.” Alya had some sort of knowing look on her face.

Marinette glanced over to Adrien, who was talking to Nino and surprisingly Chloe about something. He looked enthusiastic and whatever it was seemed to capture the two’s attention. Marinette smiled and turned back to Alya.

“I think I will.” Marinette nodded. Alya seemed content with this decision by the look on her face.

“Atta girl.” Alya bumped shoulders with Marinette.

Marinette didn't get to talk to Adrien and she is sure that Hawkmoth is out to get her personally as Marinette.

First it started as a rumble and the class could hear students come out of their classrooms to see what was wrong. Marinette had a bad feeling as the hallway filled with the loud chatter of nervous students. She pushed herself out of the chair and walked down the stairs, passing her worried classmates.

As she passed Adrien his hand shot out to catch her wrist. Marinette looked down to him as she stopped. He looked concerned and the frown on his face felt unnatural.

“Where are you going?” Adrien asked her bluntly.

“I'm the class president. I'm going to make sure we're all safe.” Marinette took her free hand and slowly uncurled his fingers. “Don't worry, I'll be okay.”

“Are you sure, dudette? It might be an akuma.” Nino spoke up.

“It could also be a car accident. Someone could have driven into the school.” Marinette shrugged and squeezed Adrien's now free hand before dropping it.

Murmurs filled the room as the students all looked at each other. Marinette took this moment to get to the door and open it.

The walkway was full of students watching as a man stumbled out of his car, which had in fact crashed through the front wall of the school. One of the teachers had run over and was trying to calm the man down. It took less than a minute for the black and purple butterfly to appear and attach itself to his bracelet.

The students started to panic as he transformed into some sort of monstrous being. Marinette sucked in a breath and turned back to her classroom. She pushed through the students who were now scattering and slammed the door of the classroom open.

“We need to get out of here. Someone drove into the school and was akumatized.” Marinette’s breath was out and she took a deep breath. Her skin was buzzing with energy that was pooling in anticipation of a fight. “It isn't sa-”

Marinette was cut off by a loud crash and the floor shook. She turned to see the akuma had thrown a chunk of concrete into the wall, barely missing a classroom door.

Marinette heard her classmates panic as they all got out of their seats. She held open the door as they ran past her, all heading to one of the many safe zones set up for destructive akumas. She counted them all and made sure everyone was out before she started to follow them. Her friends were weaving through other students and she was trying to keep up. Someone then ran into her and she fell down, her hands catching herself on the floor.

Marinette hissed in pain as she stood back up. She wiped her hands onto her jeans and ignored the way her skin burned and started to stitch itself back together. She was glad minor cuts healed quickly now or she would be stuck with them all week.

“Marinette?” She recognized Antoni’s voice automatically and turned to see him stop next to her. “We need to get to safety.”

“I just tripped. I'm too clumsy for my own good.” Marinette tried to laugh it off but Antoni didn't seem to think it was funny.

“C'mon.” Antoni reached out and took her hand. It caught her off guard as he started to pull her along. “I'll make sure you don't fall.”

Marinette went to protest but another chunk of concrete was flying. She saw it head to the space in front of them and she used her advanced strength to pull him away from where it would crash. Antoni stumbled back in shock as the concrete smashed into the walkway. It wasn't a huge chunk, but big enough to block their path some.

“Are we trapped?” Antoni sounded stressed and Marinette reminded herself that he didn't have the power of luck and the gods on his side.

Marinette glanced around and saw that there was a hole in the walkway now. There was a gap between the wall that she could hold open and get Antoni to drop through. It might hurt when he landed, but he seemed buff enough to brace himself for the fall.

“There's a hole in the floor.” Marinette pointed before pushing him towards the chunk. “I can hold up the chunk long enough for you to slip through and jump down.”

The two stopped in front of the escape plan and Antoni turned to look at her. He looked confused and for some reason mildly upset.

“No, you should go first.” Antoni shook his head. “I should be able to push it enough to make room.”

“Trust me.” Marinette stepped around him and grabbed the concrete. She pulled with just enough force to make it believable. “Jump down.”

“How the-?” Antoni looked astonished, but before he could say more there was another crash.

“Just go in.” Marinette grit her teeth as her arms started to ache. This was getting annoying how he clearly wanted to play the knight in shining armor. “I've been in the middle of akumas too many times. You haven't.”

Embarrassment flashed across Antoni's face before he gave in and crouched underneath the concrete. He looked back up at Marinette as his shoe met the edge of the hole.

“You're coming right after, right?” Antoni asked.

“Yeah. If not, I'll find another way down.” Marinette gave him a smile as she lied.

This seemed to make Antoni feel better before he dropped through the hole. As soon as he was gone Marinette dropped the concrete and slipped into the classroom next to her.

“Well… he seems nice.” Tikki gave an awkward smile.

“I'll deal with him later.” Marinette huffed, deciding she didn't really like the guy. “Tikki! Spots on!”

With a flash of pink light, Marinette could feel her body equalize and everything shift into place. She cracked her back before slipping back out of the classroom. She automatically heard the akuma across the school but it seemed he headed inside. Marinette sighed before dropping off of the balcony.

“Ladybug!” Antoni called out and Marinette swallowed a frustrated scream as she turned.

“Hello! Shouldn't you be getting to the safe room?” Marinette frowned and faked concern.

“This girl I was with, Marinette, hasn't come down from upstairs.” Antoni pointed to where she just came from.

“Oh, I know her.” Marinette gave a nervous smile. “I helped her down outside of the school so she could go hide. I promise she's okay - she somehow always gets caught up in these attacks. Me and Chat are used to helping her. Chat is always first to help. He has a soft spot for her.”

It wasn't a lie. Chat always tried to get Marinette to safety. The guy really did his best to protect her.

Marinette didn't expect Antoni's face to twist into a scoff. It was a complete 180 and caught her off guard.

“Oh great. I'm glad she's okay but I was supposed to help her.” Antoni huffed. “At least it wasn't Chat Noir.”

Marinette was too stunned to speak for a moment. She wondered if he staged himself running into her. She had a sinking feeling he wasn't some nice guy. Maybe the others were right.

“Well, I'm sure she appreciates it. She probably ran off to find her friends once I got her down.” Marinette explained and eyed where the commotion was coming from. She didn't have time for this insecurity Antoni was displaying.

“She probably ran straight to Adrien.” Antoni growled it and Marinette's eyes snapped back to him.

“I think it's time you go find shelter. I have an akuma to deal with.” Marinette's voice had an edge to it.

Antoni didn't even respond to her. He just turned with a glare and ran off. The sight made her stomach churn. She never felt this way with akumas. Not since Chat Blanc and Sandboy.

Marinette shook her head and ran towards the akuma. She could hear Chat taunting the guy as crashing echoed. It only took her a minute to arrive at the pool that now looked like a warzone. The akuma was throwing anything he could at Chat, who simply dodged. Chat noticed her quickly and grinned at her.

“Hey, My Lady! Glad you could join!” Chat jumped from a pile of rubble to kick the akuma back. “What took you so long?”

Marinette jumped into the battle, already formulating a plan. She needed something to immobilize the akuma so she could get his bracelet. Her lucky charm should be able to help with it.

“This guy was being weird about your favorite civilian.” Marinette shrugged and swung her yo-yo to wrap around the akuma’s leg. “Also, the akuma is in his bracelet. I saw a video of it before I transformed.”

“Got you.” Chat acknowledged her information before he used his baton to steady Marinette as she tugged the Akuma to fall. “What's up with that guy?”

“He seemed oddly possessive and pissed about us helping her? He apparently wanted to save her? I told him that you help her all the time and he got more upset.” Marinette shrugged as she recalled her yo-yo. “Lucky charm!”

Marinette felt a surge of power that she could only describe as pure creation flow through her and out of her hands; a dark pink flash shining for a moment. A large sheet that reminded her of a fly glue trap landed in her hands. She glanced around and spotted a clear area she could put it. She then looked up to see a space she could swing herself above it as bait.

“Really?” Chat stopped for a split second before he held out his hands for the trap. “Where does it go?”

“Go put it in the clear spot.” She nodded her head towards where she needed it. Marinette then threw her yo-yo again to get the akuma’s attention. It was good that the Akuma wasn't one who spoke. He looked like a legitimate monster. “He also doesn't like that blonde boy in her class. The one who is her close friend.”

Really? What is he, jealous?” Chat sneered and Marinette snorted. “What'd blondie do to him?”

“Be her friend and care, I guess?” Marinette had now successfully gotten the akuma's full attention. She saw Chat move out of the way. She knew he had automatically understood the second she laid it out. “I'm just saying, the guy is weird.”

Marinette casted her yo-yo out and hooked it on the spot she saw earlier. She pulled herself up in the air and the monster swiped at her. He followed her as she drew near to the trap. Marinette saw the purple glowing outline on the akuma's face but it was too late. He stepped onto the trap.

The akuma’s feet were thoroughly stuck and she dropped down next to it as Chat called his cataclysm. Carefully, he reached out and touched the bracelet. The man's form dropped automatically and Marinette caught the akuma with ease.

“Bye bye, little butterfly.” Marinette lifted her hand to send it towards an opening. Then she leaned down and smiled at the man. “Here, let us get you out.”

The man nodded and Marinette helped Chat get the man off of the glue trap. She folded it in her hands so it wouldn't stick to her. She took a deep breath before throwing it into the air.

“Miraculous Ladybug!” Marinette called out as her hand stayed in the air, as if reaching out to the thrown object.

The lucky charm burst into the cure; a glowing light pink that held thousands of pale ladybugs. It swooped through the room, fixing everything in its way, before leaving the room to continue its journey. She could feel her body soothe itself and for a moment the buzzing in her body stopped.

Once she brought her hand down, Marinette turned to see Chat talking quietly to the victim. The man was looking down as he listened. It was touching to see Chat help the victims. He was always so gentle and loving to them. It felt as if he could personally connect to them.

Which, he could. He understood what it felt like to destroy things and have them fixed by Ladybug.

Chat looked up and gave her a soft smile. Marinette returned it and stepped towards the man. His eyes lifted to her, regret flashing across his face.

“I'm sorry, I didn't mean to. A kid sprinted across the street suddenly and I swerved. The looks on the students' faces as they watched me get out of the car was too much.” The man explained to her as if Chat didn't tell him it was okay already and he had to personally apologize to her.

“It's okay, I promise. You were trying to not hurt someone and you succeeded. I didn't see any students injured when I came in. They're just shaken up.” Marinette offered him a hand. “I'm sure the kid is glad he didn't die.”

The man nodded and looked around the pool room. He deflated before he looked back at them.

“The cure didn't fix the building or my car, did it?” The man seemed hopeful.

“Sadly no. It's not how my cure works.” Marinette shook her head. The man nodded in response. “The police can get you the information for one of the Akuma victim support groups. They're wonderful and can help you with any longer effects.”

“Let's get you out of here and get some help from the police. Ladybug can handle everything else.” Chat gently took the man's arm and directed him.

The three walked quietly through the hallway until they reached the courtyard. The students were still kept away until the school gave them an all clear so it was only staff and police waiting for them. The police automatically jogged over to them.

“Are you okay, sir?” Officer Lang, the deputy sheriff who normally responded to Akuma attacks, asked.

“Yeah. Just… I'm looking forward to getting this mess cleared and going home.” The victim responded.

“We can do that for you. I'll have one of my officers help you with the akuma relief that Mayor Bourgeois created and the rest of the help you need.” Officer Lang smiled and let Chat direct the victim to one of the police officers waiting with a folder and clip board.

The two watched before Officer Lang turned back to Marinette. The man looked tired and like he needed to get a cup of coffee.

“So what happened?” Officer Lang asked with a sigh.

“Swerved so he wouldn't hit a kid who ran into the road. After driving into the school he felt horrified by the scared students and you know the rest.” Marinette motioned to the crash. “I don't know who the kid is but I'm sure you will work your magic.”

“Of course.” Officer Lang nodded. “Are you and Chat Noir okay?”

It was normal for the medics and officers to check up on Marinette and Chat. Even after explaining that they're pretty tough and full of magic the adults fussed. Chat and her know it is because they're teenagers, especially ones who started in middle school.

“Yeah, we are. You know how it is. Neither of us got directly hit so no nasty bruises to cover up.” Marinette shrugged with a small laugh.

Officer Lang smiled softly and looked down at his phone. The tired look came back to his eyes as he clicked it off.

“Well, I'll be seeing you two kids later. Out of your suit don't get in trouble. I don't want to write up our superheroes.” Officer Lang gave a small joke and Marinette shook her head.

“I'll be seeing you.” Marinette waved before moving to meet Chat Noir halfway through the courtyard.

Chat glanced over her before deciding she was okay. He reached up and tucked a stray piece of hair back behind her ear. It wasn't uncommon for a few pieces to come out of her pigtails during a fight. They weren't necessarily fit for fighting but she didn't want to change it.

“Do you know the guy's name that's weird?” Chat asked with that concerned but possessive look in his eyes.

“He said his name was Antoni. I don't know his last name, but we should definitely watch him. I doubt he's one of the stalkers but no way to be sure.” Marinette informed Chat.

Chat bristled at this. Something unrecognizable flashed across his face and Marinette pressed her lips into a thin line. His tail was whipping behind him and she wanted to grab it to make it still.

“I recognize that name. If I'm right, I don't like that guy.” Chat’s sharp canines could be seen as he said it through clenched teeth.

“Calm down, okay?” He is just some guy. Keep an eye out, remember? She can hold her own.” Marinette put a hand on his shoulder. “You know this.”

Chat nodded and looked back to the students who were slowly stepping out from their hiding spots and the safe rooms. Marinette watched also before turning back.

“I'll see you later?” Marinette offered a smile.

“Yeah.” Chat didn't look at her.

She squeezed his shoulder before throwing her yo-yo and zipping off. She made sure to hide before dropping her transformation.

“Tikki, spots off.” Marinette sighed as she said it. Tikki appeared in front of Marinette as the ache of her human body came back.

“I don't like Antoni.” Tikki said plainly. “Chat might start hanging by your roof more often now. We need to be careful.”

“I know. It's just… I don't know.” Marinette glanced around.

Marinette could have sworn she saw something move in the corner of her eye but when she turned there was nothing there. Marinette took a deep breath.

“Time to go back.” Marinette announced and Tikki took the hint and flew into her bag.

Marinette slipped into the courtyard quietly, glancing around. She could see her friends step out of a nearby room and she relaxed. Adrien was looking around and locked eyes with her. He seemed to relax slightly before waving. When Marinette waved back he started to walk towards her.

“Marinette!” A voice called from across the courtyard and she turned to see Antoni.

Marinette glanced towards Adrien, who seemingly was turning away from looking at Antoni. Marinette looked back to Antoni to see him walking rather quickly towards her. Before she could open her mouth, hands had found her shoulders.

“Thank God you're okay.” Adrien sighed and Marinette looked up at him. His hands left her shoulders to hold her face. “I was worried when we turned around and you weren't with us.”

Marinette hoped Adrien couldn't feel how her face was burning at the contact. She was happy he had gotten this comfortable with her and she wanted to explode with joy. It made it better that she could see that Antoni stopped dead in his tracks to watch.

“I was worried about you too.” Marinette brought her hands up to lay them over Adrien's. “Ladybug helped me get to safety and I had no idea where you guys went.”

“They made it to a safe room and I went into a classroom near it.” Adrien beamed at her. “All that matters is that you're safe.”

Marinette beamed back and she remembered what Alya said. To ask Adrien about the art gallery. It was a great opportunity to do it right now, especially in front of Antoni so if he had any ideas he would be thwarted.

“Thanks.” Marinette paused for a moment then braced herself. “Alya said you're going to a gallery by yourself. Could I come?”

Adrien visibly cheered up at this. He seemed excited as his true personality, the one he only showed her and their friends in private, came through. He nodded quickly as his hands dropped back to her shoulders, making her drop hers.

“Of course! I wanted to ask you, actually. I just haven't had time.” Adrien squeezed her shoulders.

“Great! We can figure the details out later!” Marinette nodded, to which Adrien nodded back.

Before they continued, Alya and Nino joined them. The conversation quickly changed and Marinette glanced around the courtyard. Her eyes landed on Lila smiling at Antoni, who looked rather pissed. Marinette shoved the uneasy feeling into her stomach before turning back to her friends.

Chapter 3

Summary:

Endless loops.

Notes:

So, I haven't been writing much because my cats are being little gremlins and hate my laptop and also demand my attention every hour of the day that I am home.

As I post this, this is the last fully written chapter I have. It is also the end of the build up. We are now about to get into what the fic was originally going to be. Literally everything up until the end of the chapter was all background stuff. Wups.

Chapter Text

Your days of hiding are numbered

The note card was the first thing she saw that morning. Marinette felt uneasy, not knowing what it meant, but she continued on.

It wasn't until throughout the day in between classes and she finally got out of school did she become worried. She felt eyes on her and she could have sworn someone was following her. Marinette did her best to pretend like she didn't notice; smiling like normal as she texted Alya back about a school project. She needed to act natural.

It wasn't until she didn't notice someone approaching her did she break character. The person had basically full body collided into her, only grunting before continuing. Marinette gripped her tote bag’s straps as she turned to watch their hurried figure. The person had their hood up and she couldn't see anything identifying.

“What a twat.” Marinette grit out like she wasn't terrified.

What if that was her stalker? What if she should have taken everybody's words more seriously rather than brushing them off and telling Chat about it. She had spent years in the worst battles that brought her to her wit’s end but this was starting to shake her.

Marinette unlocked her phone again and pressed her contacts. She quickly found Adrien's number and clicked call. She pressed her phone to her ear, clutching it almost as if her life depended on it. Adrien picked up on the second ring.

“Hey, Marinette.” Adrien sounded happy to hear from her.

“Hey, Adrien. Do you possibly want to push the gallery to today? I don't think I should be alone.” Marinette tried to school her voice, but the pause on the other side of the line made a lump form on her throat.

“Yeah. Are you okay? Where are you?” Adrien sounded stressed now.

“I'm by the park. I was about to head in when someone slammed into me. I think… that person has been following me all day.” Marinette admitted as she walked to the entrance of the park. “I'm going in the park so people can openly see me.”

“Stay in there. I'll come get you and we can go.” Adrien spoke quickly and Marinette could hear rustling on the other side. “Keep your phone unlocked so you can call quickly, okay?”

“Yeah.” Marinette nodded even if he couldn't see it. She had made it to the field and decided to sit part of the way into it so she was visible to everyone.

“See you in five.” Adrien said.

“Okay.” Marinette responded and the call ended.

Marinette kept her phone unlocked and decided to look around the park. She could still feel eyes on her but couldn't see anyone.

“I don't think it's safe right now to be alone.” Tikki spoke softly from Marinette's bag. “There's also an envelope in here. The person shoved it in.”

Marinette paused, her heart skipping a beat in the worst way. She looked down to the small goddess in her bag, who was staring up with an uneasy expression.

“You need to call the police.” Tikki’s voice was stern.

“When Adrien gets here I'll open the letter and go to the gallery. I can tell the police as Ladybug that Marinette asked for advice.” Marinette responded. She needed to figure out exactly how to do this.

“Marinette…” Tikki trailed off.

Marinette was going to respond, but Adrien ran up. He caught his breath for a moment before frowning down at her.

“Are you okay?” He asked.

“Shaken up, but physically fine.” Marinette looked into her bag and pulled out the cream colored envelope. “I just found this in my bag. It wasn't there before.”

Adrien quickly sat down and motioned to it.

“I think you should open it.” Adrien was staring at it as he spoke.

Marinette didn't say anything as she opened the envelope. She pulled out the familiar cardstock but with it fell printed pictures. Marinette and Adrien both picked up one, flipping them over. Marinette's breathing stopped as she looked at it.

It was pictures from when they were at the park with Nino and Alya. Mainly they focused on Adrien and Marinette; Adrien close over her shoulder and smiling.

“Oh god-” Marinette whispered before fumbling for the cardstock.

Why do you choose him? Some unworthy blonde boy who is nothing compared to you? He's below you and you deserve better. I could be that if you would stop looking at him. You're going to be mine.

Marinette dropped it and Adrien picked it up. Marinette covered her mouth as she looked between the images and the note. Her heart was beating quickly as she watched Adrien's fingers curl slightly; leaving awkward small folds.

“We can go to the gallery later. We're going to the police.” Adrien collected the images and shoved them back into the envelope with the note. “Marinette, this is dangerous.”

“I know.” Marinette whispered as she stood up with him. “I don't know why he chose me or…”

“It's because you're perfect. He clearly sees you as perfect in the sense that you don't have your own flaws or that you're human and act like one. He is taking you from a distance and idolizing it.” Adrien spoke honestly as he looked at her. This was the confidence that she wished he would show more often. It reminded her of Chat Noir and she wished he just embrace his honest self. “He doesn't know clumsy Marinette who makes calculated decisions on the spot but at times acts on her emotions. That you can be obsessive and stress yourself over your passion. You're perfect in the way that you're you.”

Marinette started with wide eyes at Adrien. This was something else. He has praised her before but not like this.

“You are also the first person from outside of my sheltered bubble to actually see me and make me feel normal.” Adrien looked down and he hesitated.

“You feel that way?” Marinette spoke in a tone just above a whisper.

“Always.” Adrien looked back up. “You mean the world to me.”

Marinette slowly smiled and reached her hand out to him. Adrien took her hand and helped her get to her feet. He kept holding her hand as he looked at Marinette like she was the sun. The buzzing of her skin calmed down the second she took his hand; almost as if she had become a full circuit of energy. For the first time, Marinette could see that the affection and close movements had a different meeting. They weren't motions of a friend but instead someone in love. She felt like her blinders were taken off.

Adrien Agreste had fallen in love with her.

Marinette ignored the small voice in her head that said her stalker could be him.

“C'mon. Let's get going.” Adrien broke the small moment as he glanced around.

Marinette followed his eyes and she could see a figure leaning on the other side of a tree, back to them as they leaned into the bark. The person was slightly smaller than the person who ran into her, but was wearing the same outfit.

“Yeah.” Marinette squeezed his hand and let him guide her away.

Marinette picked at her nails as Officer Lang typed on his computer. Adrien stood next to where she was sitting next to the desk. Anxiety was bubbling up but Adrien's hand on her shoulder was keeping her emotions at bay.

“And you've been throwing the others away?” Officer Lang didn't look up from his computer. “From this secret admirer and this other person?”

“Yeah. I was just brushing off the love notes until they took a turn so I had no reason to keep them. And the threats…” Marinette trailed off for a moment, taking a deep breath. “They didn't make sense so I threw them away. I thought it was some prank from one of the kids who doesn't like me as much.”

“And you have witnesses other than Agreste?” Officer Lang looked up finally, a small frown seemingly pressed onto his face. It was odd seeing him when she wasn't Ladybug. He was more serious.

“The whole class knows about them and then some of the other kids have seen me take out the letters from my locker. My classmates normally found them first.” Marinette nodded in confirmation.

“Okay, I see. I can get in contact with your classmates to see if they know something.” Officer Lang looked back to the computer to type. “You said there was a different person sending you gifts?”

“That person stopped after the threats started. I'm guessing they got nervous about it or didn't want to get caught up in this mess.” Marinette watched Officer Lang as he typed. “I know it's someone different because all three of them have different styles and signatures in their… gifts.”

Officer Lang glanced up at this and Marinette could feel Adrien tense behind her. She could have sworn Officer Lang glanced up to Adrien for a moment before looking back to her.

“How so?” Officer Lang looked mildly interested in this.

“The letters had care put in them and the person clearly put care into the presentation. The handwriting didn't look overdone and they clearly chose cardstock that you can get anywhere.” Marinette shrugged at this. “The threats seemed rushed and cheap. The purpose was to clearly scare me. Then the gifts were from someone who could afford nice things. Quality over quantity and packaged in ribbon that is out of my pay range and would be difficult to buy.”

As Marinette finished her sentence she realized what she had said. The gifts were rather nice and the materials were too nice for her to get her hands on. Everything was also something she voiced to her friends. Alya also mentioned she knew who the person was and is trying to encourage the person to ask her out.

Marinette for the second time that day realized that Adrien Agreste was in love with her, but also had sent her gifts.

“That's hyper specific.” Officer Lang raised his eyebrows.

“I pay attention to things others don't.” Marinette's mouth was dry. “I also have a love for art and fashion. My passions give me insight for these things.”

“It's a good thing you have that.” Officer Lang agreed before typing up more notes. “The gift giver more than likely is just an outside person who backed off the second you received threats. You more than likely know this person personally unlike the other two. I wouldn't worry too much about that person.”

Marinette hummed in response as she let her eyes roam the room. She was trying to distract herself from the fact that Adrien was seemingly very much in love with her and had been trying to woo her. The distraction worked because she saw Lila talking to an officer with a pitiful look on her face. Marinette tensed and Adrien’s fingers twitched.

“Is that?” Marinette spoke up and Officer Lang looked up.

“Ah. Lila Rossi. She tends to stop by for small things. Today she has reported someone at her school coming onto her but she doesn't know who he is.” Officer Lang didn't seem convinced as he looked at the two students next to him. “We have learned she cries wolf and is overdramatic. We still look into things but… let's just say we will put more energy into your case.”

Marinette felt a pang of guilt for Lila. If she was for once telling the truth then she needed to be believed. She hadn't gone crying to their class yet so it gave Marinette a shred of doubt. It could be because Lila is genuinely caught off guard by what's happening with Marinette or she didn't want the class to think she was lying this time to copy Marinette.

“She's in our class so we understand.” Adrien spoke up with annoyance in his voice.

Officer Lang seemingly caught on and snorted at that. He had typed more things into his computer before saving it. He sighed and turned to hold out a card to Marinette.

“Here's my card. Call the police and me the second anything happens. It doesn't matter if I am off duty.” Officer Lang looked serious. “Ladybug and Chat Noir are constantly patrolling so if you see them they can always help.”

“Thank you.” Marinette took the card and slid it into her pocket. She would need to put the number into her phone later. “I appreciate the help.”

“Of course.” Officer Lang nodded to her. “We will also have officers check around your house a few times a day to make sure that nobody is there. They won't come inside or bother you unless they see something suspicious.”

“That's great.” Marinette smiled. It was not great.

Officer Lang seemed content and gave a small goodbye to the two. Marinette stood up and Adrien followed her out of the building. The walk down the sidewalk was quiet until they reached a few blocks down. Marinette stopped and Adrien was two steps in front of her before he noticed and stopped, looking back.

“What's wrong?” Adrien asked.

“I figured out that you were the one leaving me gifts.” Marinette was straightforward about it. Adrien's face visibly paled. “It clicked when I was explaining the difference between them.”

“I…” Adrien started but he couldn't get anything out.

“It's okay. I'm glad that one was you. You didn't do anything wrong.” Marinette’s smile was small and she hoped he didn't see how tired she was. “Is this why Alya keeps pushing us together?”

“Yeah.” Adrien looked nervous as he glanced to the side. “I didn't want to scare you by buying things for you so I just decided to leave them. I didn't realize you were getting notes in your locker until recently and the second you got threats I stopped.”

“That's sweet of you.” Marinette held her hand out. “I appreciate it.”

Adrien looked at the hand and took it.

“You're not mad?” Adrien looked up to her eyes.

“No. I'm glad it's you.” Marinette let out a small laugh.

Adrien let out a small laugh back and Marinette wondered where they stood without them voicing what is becoming obvious between them.

Marinette laid on Alya’s bed as she scrolled through social media. Normally she didn’t do much on it other than follow her friends and designers she looked up to. The Ladyblog was the farthest she would go outside of her comfort. Sure, she ran accounts outside of her normal ones to promote her small shop where she took commissions but she didn’t care as much about whatever drama was happening on the internet. It wasn’t her thing. That didn’t stop Marinette today from scrolling through different Ladybug tags. She wanted to see if whoever had clearly found out she was Ladybug was posting about it on social media.

Her searching had led to her going down a rabbit hole of theories on who she was. A lot of the leads led to nothing other than teenagers who had vaguely similar hair. Kagami was the closest person and it was immediately debunked through her being akumatized. They had pointed out that she had been with Adrien before it and the timing just didn’t line up. The thread quickly dissolved into discussing their break up; analyzing it as if they knew the whole story. It was almost amusing until someone brought her up.

He seems to have a type. There was a girl with a similar hair color seen with him in public a few times. She’s probably in his class. They look cute together. One person wrote.

Maybe they’re dating? I’ve seen a few pictures of them circulating and they look like it. The next comment said and Marinette felt too exposed by this.

“Uhg.” Marinette groaned and clicked out of the post. Alya looked up and raised an eyebrow.

“Yeah?” Alya questioned.

“I went through a few posts to look at something and somehow found a thread about Kagami and Adrien’s relationship. Somehow I namelessly was being rumored to be dating Adrien.” Marinette rolled onto her back and stared up at the ceiling.

“Isn’t that good? It means that if you ever get to date him then people will be adjusted and open to the idea.” Alya sounded confused as she poked Marinette’s leg from where she laid on the floor. “I think you’re overreacting.”

“I don’t want attention like that.” Marinette peered at Alya, who snorted.

“Really? You are publicly recognized by Jagged Stone and it's caused you to get traction for an online shop.” Alya shook her head and crossed her arms. “You’ve also won a competition run by Gabriel Agreste. People have a vague idea who you are.”

“But they don’t know my face.” Marinette pointed back and kicked Alya’s hand away as she had gone to poke Marinette’s leg again. “I want to be recognized for my talent. Not for dating someone. I’ll look desperate and like I’m using him.”

“It kinda comes with dating Adrien, girl. People are going to have negative viewpoints about you underneath the good ones.” Alya rolled her eyes and looked back to her phone. “Besides, I’m pretty sure you’re close to actually being able to date him.”

“No, I’m not.” Marinette stuck her foot out and pushed Alya’s shoulder with the flat of her foot. Alya let Marinette push her over as she kept scrolling on her phone. “I’m comfortable with what we have right now.”

“Mmmmhm. Sure.” Alya didn’t seem to be listening at this point.

Marinette was sitting at her desk quietly, sketching a design that was trying to escape her. She hadn't had any inspiration lately so she wanted to get down the small semblance of an idea she had.

Marinette was absorbed in this. It was lunch and she stayed behind to just be alone. She needed the silence to clear her head. Too many thoughts had filled her recently and it was starting to be too much. That's why when the door opened, she tried to not sigh in irritation. She looked up to see Chloe closing the door behind her. The two made eye contact before Chloe started to make her way to Marinette's desk.

“Look, I know I've made your life hell.” Chloe started once she was in front of Marinette. Chloe looked exposed and raw; like she was showing a vulnerable side to Marinette. “But I understand what it's like to have stalkers. Adrien too.”

Marinette didn't know what to say. Chloe had never officially addressed their history as she stopped bullying Marinette. The two had come to an unspoken agreement to just not interact unless needed. It worked out in both of their favors typically.

“What I'm trying to say is that if you need anything from me I'll help you.” Chloe sighed and looked to the side. “It's shitty and nobody deserves it.”

Marinette gave a smile as Chloe looked back at her. Chloe seemed to relax at the sight.

“Thank you, Chloe.” Marinette sincerely said. “If anything happens I'll call you.”

“Good.” Chloe flipped her hair back over her shoulder and turned to walk down the stairs. “If not, I'll come find you myself.”

Marinette couldn't help but feel amused by this. Chloe wasn't an openly friendly person. Adrien had said that he is one of the only people she genuinely lets see the soft side she hides. Marinette always wondered what it was like and she was now thinking she might have just seen through the cracks.

Marinette slammed her locker door hard.

Students around her jumped as she ripped open the letter and barely looked it over. It was some sort of threat towards Adrien that she didn't fully read. She understood exactly what it was and shoved it into her bag. Today was a bad day and she didn't think it could get worse.

Students moved around her as she stomped through the hallway. She noticed Antoni watching her in the distance and she flat out ignored his small wave to get up the stairs. She could see his hurt face but she didn't care. She just wanted to get to her friends. The energy in her body was screaming to be released and she could feel students staring at her. She knew she was radiating something dangerous that they could feel.

When she stepped into the classroom she could already tell that her day was about to get 100% worse.

Once again students crowded around her desk, whispering into the semicircle. She stomped up the stairs and pushed through her friends to get to her desk. The sight of her desk made her want to scream.

On the desk itself was the word liar and fake written in black sharpie. There was an actual note on her desk.

Your time is up.

Marinette grabbed it off of the desk and balled it up. She yanked open the classroom window with a little too much force and threw the note into the busy street. It didn't cause any problems for cars, but just landed on the pavement.

“God!” Marinette slammed the window shut, which made the poor thing make a horrible noise.

“Marinette-” Alix started and stopped when Marinette turned around quickly.

“I'm sick of this!” Marinette grit out. “If they have a problem with me then they need to just say it to my face! First I have someone threatening Adrien this morning in a note and now this!”

“Someone's threatening Adrien?” Rose squeaked.

Marinette groaned and sagged in her seat. The chair scraped slightly against the floor from her sudden weight. She yanked the note out of her bag and slapped it onto her ruined desk.

“What did I even do?” Marinette half complained.

Rose picked the note up and the others read it over her shoulder. Silence filled the room as Marinette waited for them to react. Her finger scratched at a cut in her desk from a previous student idly. She didn't look up as her friends all looked at her.

“And you went to the police earlier?” Kim sounded confused and worried at the same time. “How come they haven't caught them?”

“It takes time.” Marinette shrugged as her nail dug into the cut. “They'll catch them eventually. I doubt the two will ever do anything about it.”

The class didn't seem sure, but their attention shifted to the door where Lila laughed loudly. Antoni was standing with her as Lila’s hand touched his arm.

“Oh, that's so fun!” Lila beamed at Antoni and Marinette looked down as he looked in her direction. “We'll have to talk more about this later, okay? I promise it'll work out how you want it.”

“Thanks, Lila. I'll see you later.” Antoni patted her hand before he gave Marinette one last look. He then left the classroom without a single glance at the others.

As if on cue, some of the others moved to flock her. They all started to ask her about Antoni at once. Marinette heard someone mention how he was the guy being weird to her.

“Guys, he's just a friend! I'm helping him with something outside of school. In return he's helping me!” Lila beamed as she held her hands behind her back. “He's also not my type! I prefer blondes and athletic guys!”

The others quickly agreed and Marinette rolled her eyes. Her only saving grace was that Alya finally slipped into the classroom, looking worried as she glanced at Lila. Marinette watched Alya walk towards her and then sit in the spot next to her quietly.

“What's wrong, Als?” Marinette asked in a hushed voice so she didn't draw attention.

“I just witnessed Lila and Antoni talking about how much they hate Ladybug and Chat Noir. Lila was adding fuel to the fire and it was disturbing.” Alya looked to Marinette with a frown. “She also was feeding his hatred for Adrien.”

“Adrien?” Marinette blinked at her. “Why?”

“Lila started about how cute she thought you two were and how she had backed off from Adrien so you could have him. It then snowballed into Ladybug and Chat Noir.” Alya explained and she turned her head slightly to watch Lila explain some scheme of hers. “I don't trust either of them. I think they're planning something.”

“I already have two psychos to deal with, I'm sure we can handle those two being weird.” Marinette patted Alya's shoulder. “And besides, what's the worst they could do?”

Alya didn't reply but instead kept watching Lila. Marinette already knew what Lila could do and it was nice to see Alya’s journalist skills break out of Lila's hold finally. They sliced Lila to what Marinette saw and Marinette couldn't help but feel seen at the same time. Someone other than Chloe and Adrien were on her side.

“I guess.” Alya finally replied, but it was more of a mumble.

Marinette swung through the dark Paris sky with ease. Chat Noir was trailing behind her, using his staff to propel himself.

Marinette felt free from her worries and basked in it. She felt at home and she wouldn't have it any other way with Chat Noir. As Ladybug she could escape her life for just a bit. She didn't have to be totally guarded after years of fighting so she could just enjoy herself.

Marinette swung herself up and landed on a roof. She didn't stumble as she landed on her feet to start walking automatically. She reached the other side as Chat landed behind her. He walked up to stand next to her as they stared into the skyline.

“Everything okay? You seem more carefree today. Normally that means you're stressed.” Chat asked as he bumped her shoulder with his. He didn't look down at her and she didn't look up.

“My civilian life is getting too complex. I found out that a girl in my class hates us and is fueling this guy into hating us also. He already didn't like us but it seems to be worse.” Marinette admitted. “I don't know how to handle it without exposing myself.”

“Sounds like the situation sucks. It's somewhat good that they can't do anything unless they get akumatized.” Chat pointed out.

“I guess.” Marinette mumbled it.

Marinette knew that Lila could and would do something. She could control her emotions pretty well and she's used it to be akumatized before. There was also the fear that Lila was fueling Antoni up to become an akuma. It didn't sit right and Marinette hasn't found out Lila's angle yet.

“Do you know how Marinette is doing?” Chat asked quietly. Marinette finally looked up. “I haven't seen her in a bit and I'm worried.”

“She's okay. I caught her a day ago and she just said that the threats now encompass Adrien Agreste. She also said that the more nasty notes said her time was up.” Marinette wasn't lying but it still felt weird.

“Oh…” Chat trailed off. “Do you think we could do something?”

“I don't know.” Marinette admitted. “It's not like we can watch her every move. I also can't watch her outside of the mask.”

“I can.” Chat said suddenly then looked down. “I shouldn't have said that.”

Marinette stared at Chat, her lips parting slightly as she came to a loss for words. Her mind raced through all of the people he could be before she cut the thought off quickly. She shouldn't try to figure it out, especially as Chat turned his head to look at her.

“Don't think too much into that. I pass by her a lot and just recognize her. I could just learn her schedule and try to look natural.” Chat tried to cover it up but she could see through it. It was the same one she had used before.

“Okay.” Marinette nodded with a small smile. “Just don't make her think you're her stalker.”

“I'll do my best.” Chat bumped his shoulder into hers.

This has made everything more complicated.

Marinette had been too caught up in everything to even think about her relationship with Adrien.

After the two mutually acknowledged Adrien had feelings for her the lines between friends and something more blurred. It was all sudden but it felt natural. He made the energy underneath her skin calm down. He made her feel human again and she wanted to hold him forever.

They had started to sit close to each other and hold hands. Adrien always gravitated to Marinette in any situation; throwing his arm over her shoulder as they laughed and bumping their shoulders in a familiar way. He let his walls fall fully and she got to see the jokester that was buried deep in Adrien. The small moments of them being alone consisted of light banter and him speaking his mind. Marinette preferred it over the boy she originally fell in love with.

Of course, everyone noticed it. Nobody said anything but accepted it. Lila and Chloe didn't even say anything; Chloe seemed to be okay with it and Lila burned holes into Marinette with her eyes when nobody looked. It felt nice that everyone just accepted the two blurring the lines and not acknowledging that they were practically dating.

“Do you want to see something cool?” Adrien shot a grin Marinette's way. It was the same grin he used when he got in her face after her pictures of him got televised live.

Adrien and Marinette had stayed after school that day to do homework together. They thought that it was an open space that they'd see someone if they were watching. The school also allowed time for students to stay after for clubs and study halls. Teachers tended to stay after so it was approved. That being said, Adrien was sitting on the ground a few feet away from Marinette leaning against one of the walls. Marinette herself had papers and books spread across the floor in front of her.

“Is it actually cool?” Marinette raised an eyebrow but still smiled.

“Of course!” Adrien pushed himself up and walked over to the benches nearby. “I learned this when I was bored in my bedroom lately.”

“Yeah?” Marinette leaned back on her hands.

Adrien gave her a thumbs up before he took a small running start then jumped on the bench’s back. His shoes skidded slightly against the backing then he jumped off, twisting himself in the air and landing.

“Holy-” Marinette’s eyes grew wide. “You know how to do that too?”

“Yeah. It took practice though!” Adrien looked proud of himself then paused. “Too?”

Marinette faltered for a moment as she realized her mistake. She shouldn't have said that.

“I got a little too into doing tricks after I…” Marinette paused for a moment for dramatic effects. “I had to work with Ladybug once and afterwards I thought I'd try some things out.”

“You got to work with Ladybug? Me too!” Adrien practically ran over and sat in front of her. “You should show me! I bet you're also strong from the bakery so you would be the perfect superhero.”

Marinette laughed nervously as she looked down. She hoped it looked like she was being self conscious and not caught.

“I'm only good at wall jump flips.” Marinette shrugged. “I can lift things pretty easily. I could probably lift you up.”

Adrien grabbed Marinette's hands and she looked up at him. She had a goofy grin on his face that reminded her of Chat Noir looking at her.

“Let's try it. You're amazing but this makes it even better.” Adrien pulled her up with him.

“I- sure.” Marinette agreed and let go of his hands once up.

Marinette took a deep breath before she reached out. She easily hooked her arms around Adrien and picked him up bridal style. She was used to picking people up, plus her extra strength from being a vessel, so she was easily able to lift him to shoulder height. Adrien laughed and looked ecstatic. She put him down after a second.

“I could probably lift you higher but I haven't tried to lift human sized things over my head. Just bags of flour.” Marinette admitted.

“Still, that's amazing.” Adrien put his hand on her shoulder. “You don't give yourself credit.”

“I guess.” Marinette shrugged. “I don't talk about it much. Kim brings it up sometimes and I always have to shut him down.”

Adrien shook his head but still gave her a happy look. It was odd to have someone give her a loving look outside of the mask. It made her feel loved for who she was.

All of the notes had stopped.

Marinette could still feel eyes on her and had seen people following her from a distance. They just never came too close to interact with her. It was unsettling and it also made the whole class nervous. They had all noticed the people shadowing and anticipated more notes that never came.

Marinette had been counting her blessings because of it. She knew that any second it would all come down. She had slowly realized it was Antoni by his distant hovering and he seemed to be friends with Lila, but his eyes were always on Marinette. She tried to ignore his looks.

Marinette sat at her deck quietly with her head proper up by her hand against her cheek and elbow against the wood. Her other hand was idly tracing shapes onto her desk. She was early to school and didn't want to linger in the courtyard with her classmates. Marinette wanted to avoid the nervous glances and the sharp eyes that had been finding her. If she was in here then nobody could see her.

Marinette tilted her hand to cup the air and focused hard on her palm. The energy inside of her flowed towards it and a soft pink glow emanated from her skin. Slowly, a small object started to form; becoming tangible slowly. After a few moments a small glass animal fell into her palm. It didn't have a particular animal trait other than looking like a balloon dog. Marinette sat it on her desk and slowly pet its head with her finger.

“Trust me, it'll work.” A girl's voice spoke from outside the classroom. It was muffled so she couldn't tell who it was. “You've seen how she looks at you. If she says no… well… you'll know who is to blame.”

“So you think there's a chance she'll say no?” A guy responded. Marinette wished she could hear them clearly so she could identify them.

“Of course!” The girl sounded too enthusiastic. “But she doesn't know it was you and she needs a savior type. We already have a person to pin it on.”

“Right.” To Marinette's surprise the guy sounded convinced. Marinette could easily tell he was being manipulated.

Marinette was staring at the door, hoping that they would pass by the window on the door already so she could see who it was. Marinette was sure the girl was Lila based off of the overzealous way she talked. Whoever was her current victim clearly didn't know her like their classmates did and fell into the trap.

“Thank you for trusting me. I've set up a ton of other people so it has to work.” Lila was probably giving him her sickening sweet smile.

Marinette then heard soft goodbyes and the door opened. Lila stepped in and didn't seem to notice Marinette for a moment. Lila was blowing air out of her mouth with puffed cheeks, rolling her eyes. When she finally looked up to see Marinette, her eyes widened slightly as if she was caught off guard. Lila quickly recovered from it.

“Oh, it's you.” Lila made a face at Marinette as she walked to her desk. “I didn't expect you to be here, let alone on time.”

“I get tired of being late.” Marinette shrugged and peered at Lila. “What sick game are you playing now? Does he know about your so-called liars disease?”

Lila dropped her bag onto her desk before turning to look at Marinette. She gave Marinette a smile that was vicious and borderline a sneer.

“No, he doesn't. Which is perfect because it makes it easier for him to take my advice.” Lila waved a hand. “Plus, he's not a victim if he willingly sought me out. We found out we have a similar goal in mind, even if we have conflicting interests.”

“Yeah? And what's that?” Marinette crossed her arms.

Lila walked up the steps and stopped in front of Marinette. She leaned on Marinette's desk before her eyes landed on the glass animal. Lila trailed a finger across its side before taking her hand back.

“We both know what it's like to hate someone who everyone loves. I want to see the downfall of someone and he wants the same.” Lila tilted her head at the animal before her eyes flicked up to Marinette. “Don't worry, it's not you Marinette. I have you right where I want you right now so you're going to stay right here.”

Marinette opened her mouth to say something back but the classroom door opened again. Their classmates came in and Lila’s face and demeanor changed.

“Oh! It must be terrifying! I'm so sorry he ended up leaving a letter at your house!” Lila reached out and grabbed Marinette's hands. She gripped them hard, nails digging into skin. “If you ever need help my mom has connections! I can get you someone to help since those policemen haven't gotten him.”

“No, it's fine Lila. I do appreciate the offer.” Marinette gave a tight smile as she dug her nails back. “It's died down so I'm hoping they gave up.”

Lila's eyes searched Marinette's eyes for a moment before she let go of her hands. Lila clasped her hands in front of her chest as Alya sat down next to Marinette. Lila was putting on a brave face.

“Please just let me know!” Lila pleaded. “I know we've had troubles in the past but I do care.”

“Thanks, Lila.” Marinette grit out.

Lila seemed pleased with this and went back to her seat. The other students told Lila how nice she was for offering before saying Marinette could handle herself. Marinette squeezed her hands into a fist before unfurling them.

“What was that about?” Alya asked as she took out her notebook. Alya wasn't blind to the true dynamic of Marinette and Lila's rivalry anymore; she had come to her senses a while ago. “I thought she hated you?”

“She does.” Marinette pulled out her own notebook and flipped it open. She moved the glass animal slightly before setting the notebook down. “She was telling me about her new lies to some boy. She's trying to play matchmaker I think.”

“Poor guy. He doesn't know she has a problem.” Alya cringed. “Hopefully it's doing more good than bad.”

“I guess.” Marinette didn't particularly share the same sentiment. The guy sounded shadier than Antoni.

Marinette then realized she never told anyone other than Adrien about the letter being left at her house.

“Hey, Marinette!”

Marinette turned to see Antoni waving at her as he ran over. Marinette stopped, which made her three friends stop to watch. Marinette could see Adrien and Nino tense up out of her peripheral vision. She couldn't see Alya but she could feel Alya's hand on her back.

“What's up, Antoni?” Marinette gave a fake smile.

“I wanted to know if you possibly wanted to get coffee later.” Antoni gave her a genuine smile. For a moment Marinette could have sworn he was just a normal guy and not possibly her stalker. “Like a date.”

“Oh…” Marinette glanced at Nino and Adrien for support. They were frowning and watching Antoni. Marinette focused on Antoni again and gave a small shake of her head. “I'm sorry. You seem like a nice guy but I feel like I don't know you enough to go on a date. I'm also preoccupied with someone already.”

Antoni stared at her for a second. It wasn't long but it was this blank stare with almost dead eyes. It chilled Marinette to her bones as he clicked back into place. He looked down, disappointment radiating off of him. Marinette felt bad for a moment until he looked back up. His eyes were a little too wide.

“Are you sure? It's not because those superheroes or pretty boy here told you not to?” Antoni motioned towards Adrien.

“Pretty boy?” Adrien softly mimicked in confusion.

“No.” Marinette shook her head with a small frown. She could feel her Ladybug personality ooze into her as she stood straighter. “I'm going through a hard time right now with my stalker, if you hadn't heard from other students. I'm not saying it's you, but I'm saying I don't know you well and I would have preferred if you tried to become my friend before asking me out.”

Antoni blinked at her before looking at Marinette's friends. He zeroed back in on Marinette as his anger clearly brewed.

“It's okay.” Antoni said through gritted teeth and a strained smile. “That makes sense.”

“Thank you for understanding.” Marinette gave her classic friendly smile even though she felt something between fear and unease. Alya's fingers pressed into her back before gripping onto her cardigan.

“Of course!” It sounded a bit strained. Antoni turned so he could walk away. “See you around.”

The four friends watched as he walked away, something sick radiating from him. Marinette could sense the danger like humidity clinging onto her skin before it rains. It felt like a bad omen.

“We should go.” Alya moved her hand to Marinette's arm. “He could be akumatized and if he is you two can't be near here.”

“She's right, dudes.” Nino started to pull Adrien along. “This is one fight I don't want to be part of.”

Marinette looked to Adrien, who was staring after Antoni. There was something about his eyes that didn't look right. His pupils were small and they seemed to have yellow details in them. He blinked before turning to Marinette, the difference in his eyes disappearing.

“They're right. He could hurt you.” Adrien agreed.

“Okay.” Marinette's throat tightened as she let her friends pull her along.

Marinette knew that if he was akumatized then she'd have to come back anyways. It would be hard with them watching over her, but she trusted them if it came down to it. They were trustworthy mostly and in the end Paris needed her.

The akumatization didn't take long to happen.

The sound of an explosion shook the cafe that the four friends had moved to. People around them screamed and dropped to the ground to cover their heads. Marinette pulled Alya down with her, gripping Alya's arm so she wouldn't run off.

“It has to be him.” Alya turned to Marinette as she pulled out her phone. “I can go out there and see. I need this for the Ladyblog and I will send you the details.”

“Alya, don't.” Marinette hissed before glancing at Nino and Adrien. They were looking at each other as if they were having a mental conversation.

“Marinette, I'll be fine. I've done this a million times.” Alya brushed her off and carefully took her arm back. “I promise I won't get hurt.”

Marinette opened her mouth to talk, to tell Alya she needs to stop running into battle because she hates it, but another explosion rattled them. Marinette lost her balance but caught herself on the table leg. Alya took this opportunity to grab Nino's hand and take off.

“Wait!” Marinette reached out towards Alya. “Shit!”

“Should we go after them?” Adrien asked. Marinette could tell he was nervous without looking at him.

“I will.” Marinette decided, knowing she needed to go save the day. She turned to Adrien with a smile. “You know I can hold my own.”

“I know.” Adrien parroted. “I'm just worried.”

“It'll be okay, we can meet back up here afterwards if you have to leave.” Marinette held out her pinkie. Adrien linked his back with a stressed smile.

“Okay.” Adrien nodded.

Marinette shot one last smile before she got up and ran out of the store, passing by citizens who looked at her like she was crazy. She quickly made it down the black and ducked into an alley.

“You need to be careful with this one.” Tikki warned as she flew out of Marinette's purse. “He's going to have a vendetta against you.”

“I know. I feel bad, but at the same time he was stalking me.” Marinette nodded at Tikki.

“Promise?” Tikki frowned.

“Promise.” Marinette replied. “Tikki, spots on!”

Pink light flashed around Marinette and she stepped out the second it was over. Her body adjusted quickly and she felt the draw of the akuma. She ran back towards the school where she saw a completely white figure floating in the air. Marinette came to a halt in the street and stared at the figure. The only thing she could see that was detailed was a bracelet hanging off of the left wrist.

“You lied, Rossi.” The figure spoke out, the voice sounded almost like static. “You fooled me like they fooled her.”

It all made sense. Lila was sending her the threats and she was manipulating Antoni this whole time. This had all been a ploy to either set Marinette up for something or to akumatize Antoni. But Marinette couldn't tell why or how she did it. Lila gains nothing from getting Antoni akumatized. Yes, she will get revenge on Marinette, but the whole thing didn't make sense.

“Wow! Never seen that before.” Chat landed next to Marinette and tilted his head at the akuma. “What's up with him?”

“I don't know his powers other than hovering and I don't know his name yet.” Marinette shrugged at him. “He's upset with Lila Rossi.”

“I guess it serves her right.” Chat didn't bat an eye as he said it. “We both know she's not the best person.”

“You could say that again.” Marinette nodded and looked towards Chat. “I think the akuma is in his bracelet. Ready to fight?”

“I'm always ready when it comes to fighting next to you, M’Lady.” Chat shot her a toothy grin; showing off his sharp canines.

“Well, let's get to it then.” Marinette looked back up to the akuma and flung her yo-yo forward.

The two young heroes launched themselves onto the roof of the school, not too far away from the akuma. Their landing was quiet but the akuma still saw the movement and turned to them. He didn't have any eyes, but his mouth has a grey tint to it.

“Ladybug and Chat Noir.” The akuma turned to them, his voice crackling slightly. It held malice in it but it wasn't the same amount as when he was calling out for Lila. “You've finally arrived. Are you here to protect Lila from me or save Marinette?”

“I'd prefer to protect everyone, since you're asking.” Chat grinned and leaned onto his baton. “You don't look too keen on hurting others, though.”

“They're irrelevant to me. This is between me, Lila, Marinette, and you two.” The akuma responded. “Why would I harm others when I can get what I want?”

“And what's that?” Marinette asked, frowning at him. She motioned to the school with her hand. “You've already destroyed part of the school to get it.”

“I need to find out the truth. Why Lila had lied to me. Why doesn't Marinette like me. And then of course, stripping you two of your miraculous and stop you from lying to all of Paris.” The akuma explained. “I am named Revealer for that reason.”

“As much as I'd love for you to expose Lila’s lies, the others can't happen. Marinette is a nice girl and you need to take her at face value. And for us, well… you can't do that for reasons.” Chat shrugged. “I'm guessing you got rejected, which I get. I get rejected all the time. But you have to take it in stride.”

Marinette couldn't tell how long this back and forth was going to last. Surprisingly Revealee wasn't being overly aggressive. If Marinette has to guess, the only reason why his stalking and notes escalated was because of Lila. It all lined up and Marinette hated how she and Antoni fell straight into the trap.

The outline of the butterfly appeared over Revealer’s face and the akuma paused. Marinette could tell that Hawkmoth was antagonizing him or convincing him of something to get this going. As the outline disappeared, Revealer rolled his shoulders.

“This is in stride. But for now, I need to get your miraculous to end my side of the bargain.” Revealed raised his hand and a beam of white light shot from his hand.

Marinette and Chat dived in two different directions to avoid the blast from hitting them. The blast caused a small chunk of the roof to come off from the impact and Marinette cringed at it. She really hoped that this wasn't a power that hurt physically on top of whatever it did. She hated those.

Marinette swung out her yo-yo and pulled herself up, propelling herself into the air as Chat dashed in her direction. They made brief eye contact before she pulled her knees up and he extended his baton. It came up to meet her and she pushed one of her feet against it, jumping off from it and flying towards Revealer.

Revealer held up a hand towards Marinette and she threw her yo-yo at him. It wrapped around his leg and she yanked him hard. His feet came out from underneath him and he was now floating on his back, struggling to get back up.

“Look at that!” Chat laughed as he launched higher onto the school roof. He caught Marinette easily. “He's all tangled up!”

“That isn't a pun nor funny.” Marinette rolled her eyes as she yanked Revealer closer. Chat put her down onto the roof.

“A cat never reveals his jokes too quickly.” Chat laughed before he got his baton ready.

“That was horrible.” Revealer yelled out and yanked his foot towards himself.

Marinette yelped in shock and only stumbled a foot as he got free. Marinette recalled her yo-yo and dodged as a blast went her way. Chat laughed at it as he scrambled away. The three then went back and forth dodging attacks as people started to linger in the streets. They seemingly understood that they were not the targets of the attack for once so they could all gawk.

“Why do you even care this much?” Marinette called out as she slid to a stop on the roof. She caught her breath for a second as Revealer sent a blast towards Chat.

“I'm tired of being lied to! Everyone is controlling each other and it's not fair that they lied to me and you two are lying to her.” Revealer sounded frustrated as he turned on her. “Aren't you tired of lying to everyone?”

Those words caught Marinette slightly off guard. Those were some of the exact words the threats used in the notes. Marinette stumbled backwards slightly as she lost her footing.

“It's not that simple!” Marinette called back out.

“It really is.” Revealer sneered and shot a blast at her.

Marinette turned to jump away but she was a bit too slow because of her misstepping. The blast hit her back and she was consumed with white light for a moment. Marinette could feel Tikki being forced out and her body being captured back into her mortal skin. It hurt like touching a flame and she let out a startled yell.

The light snapped away in a flash and Marinette had to catch herself with her hands as she stumbled to her knees. She could hear the gasps from the citizens below her. Instead of seeing her red and black gloves hands, Marinette saw her calloused hands with pink nail polish.

Panic surged through Marinette as she looked up. Revealer and Chat Noir had both stopped in their place to stare and Tikki was floating next to her.

“Marinette.” Tikki spoke quietly and hovered closer.

Marinette stood up and looked down to the people in the street. Some phones were pointed at her while others stared in shock. Marinette was petrified at the sight; knowing they could all see her as who she was terrified her to her core. Nobody was ever supposed to know. Seeing Alya underneath lowering her phone as she stared up hurt.

Marinette couldn't panic right now, though. She looked back to Revealer and stood up straight; squaring her shoulders and tilting her chin up in the way that Ladybug always would.

“Is this what you wanted?” Marinette asked Revealer. “What will Hawkmoth do now? Steal my miraculous and live with the fact he put my life in danger for his own selfish gain? You aren't getting what you want now.”

Chat looked between Revealer and Marinette for a moment. Marinette didn't look at him but instead she flexed her fingers on one hand slightly, hoping he'd get the message to attack. She could still fix this.

The purple outline appeared once again over Revealer's face. The two were seemingly having a conversation and Marinette could make out the word liar coming from Revealer. Marinette was hoping everything would click into place. Her instincts knew that Chat and Revealer were the two important pieces of the puzzle. Once they got the akuma out then they'd go from there.

“You lied to me.” Revealer spoke louader, still talking to Hawkmoth. He wasn't looking at the two heroes so Marinette looked to Chat and nodded.

Chat nodded back before he launched himself up. Chat collided with Revealer and the two tumbled across the roof. They came closer to Marinette and she could tell Revealer was definitely a long range fighter. He was losing badly at hand to hand.

Chat pinned Revealer down and Marinette ran over. Tikki followed close behind and hovered over Marinette as she slipped the bracelet off of Revealer. It looked like a metal chain bracelet, nothing fancy.

“You can do this.” Tikki whispered. “You're far enough on.”

Marinette glanced up at Tikki before looking back down to the bracelet. She took a deep breath before breaking the chain. The akuma came out and Marinette caught it with her hand. She cupped it carefully and brought it to her chest. The energy clinging to the akuma felt warped and toxic. She closed her eyes and focused. She felt energy flow into her hand and absorbed the warped energy. She opened her eyes again and let the butterfly go with care. It fluttered in the air for a moment before flying off, most likely back to Hawkmoth.

Revealer transformed back into Antoni, who Chat helped up. Antoni looked between the two for a moment before settling to look at Marinette. He looked dazed, almost confused, before it all seemed to click.

“I'm sorry. I didn't mean for this to happen.” Antoni tried to explain.

“I know it was you who was stalking me. I also know Lila perpetuated it and lied to you.” Marinette cut him off. “I said no because I don't know you and I am going through something. But I also said no because I knew you were the one stalking me and leaving me notes. I don't want to date someone who terrorized me.”

Antoni looked embarrassed over the fact that he was being called out. He glanced around again and he noticed Chat was only peering at Antoni. Marinette could feel the anger radiating off of Chat.

“You're going to receive your punishment along with Lila. I'll make sure it happens.” Marinette crossed her arms. “I hope you understand what you've just done.”

“I-” Antoni started but was cut off.

“I'm getting you two off the roof and we can handle this outside of the prying eyes of the press.” Chat interrupted and pulled them along.

Chat helped both of them down into the school courtyard, which was now empty. Once the fighting had stopped the students all evacuated and the building was now left for them to finish everything.

“M-” Chat started then stopped. He frowned at her as he looked into her eyes. “Marinette. We need a lucky charm.”

“You got this.” Tikki reassured Marinette. “You're stronger than you think.”

Marinette looked back to the bracelet she was still holding. She glanced at Antoni, who was now being pulled to the side by Officer Lang. Marinette looked back to the bracelet and closed her eyes. She focused again before energy pooled in her hands. She opened her eyes and threw it into the air.

“Miraculous Ladybug!” Marinette called out.

The officers and others in the courtyard stopped to watch the magic start to fix things. Marinette could feel it pulling at her mortal form in an aching way. It made her feel tired and overworked. She resisted the urge to sigh as her body deflated slightly.

Marinette stared up at the magic as it flew around. It came back to her but instead of fixing what happened to her it absorbed back into her skin. Marinette felt her body tingle before it settled. That was when the panic came slamming back into her. She was revealed to Paris and now everyone knew she was their hero. They knew she was clumsy and weird Marinette. She will never be able to live a normal life now.

“Oh my god.” Marinette’s breathing quickened and she fell to her knees, covering her face with her hands. “They all know.”

“Marinette.” Chat kneeled next to her and put a hand on her back. “It'll be okay, I promise. We will fix this.”

Marinette looked up to Chat, tears falling down onto her hands that now hovered near her face. Chat looked so genuine but serious. His hand was silencing the buzzing underneath her skin and it made her feel slightly better. It didn't fix the impending doom, sadly.

“But they know.” Marinette repeated. “Me and my family are in danger.”

“It humanizes you. We can use it to paint a picture for the people to accept. They love you and Paris has shown they will always support us.” Chat leaned closer to bump his shoulder against hers. He was giving her a small smile that felt like a hug. “If not, it's you and me against the world.”

Marinette smiled back before pressing her forehead against his. Chat wrapped his arm around her shoulder and pulled her into a hug.

“If it makes you feel better, I'm glad it's you. You're wonderful in and out of the mask and it makes sense.” Chat whispered to her.

“Really?” Marinette whispered back.

“Of course. You'll know why later.” Chat squeezed her shoulder. Marinette knew this meant that he would show her who he was and butterflies that could challenge Hawkmoth’s fluttered in her stomach.

Before Marinette could reply, someone stood in front of the two. Marinette could tell by the shoes that it was one of the officers. He Croucher to their level as the two heroes looked up. It was Officer Lang. He looked devastated as he took in Marinette's tear streaked face.

“I knew you were young but…” Officer Lang trailed off. Marinette knew that he was referencing her becoming a hero at 13.

“Yeah.” Marinette wiped her face with a small laugh.

“We arrested Antoni. He's 18 and since you're a minor we have to take him in.” Officer Lang informed. “Once we question him we will be able to prove who the other is. He's rather cooperative.”

“It's Lila Rossi. She's always had it out for me. I don't know what I've done to her.” Marinette told Officer Lang. “She might hide from you.”

“We will find her, don't worry.” Officer Lang looked behind the two before looking back at them. “You're going to have to give statements and go in front of Paris. Can you do that?”

“I've done it before. I'm scared but I will do it again.” Marinette looked back down to her shaking hands.

“Okay.” Officer Lang nodded. “I'm sorry, Marinette.”

“Thanks.” Marinette mumbled.

Officer Lang got up and walked away, leaving Marinette and Chat. The two sat there silently before Chat pulled her up.

“Let's get you home.” Chat whispered.

“Okay.” Marinette nodded.
