Before Sora could officially settle in with Mario and Luigi, there was the matter of Mario's family. Turns out the brothers have relatives in the Metro Kingdom. When they became heroes of the Mushroom Kingdom, they moved out of the building they initially resided in to live independently. Pietro "Pio" and Mia Mario were the first to hear about them wanting to talk about this matter since they arrived. So, they were sitting in the dining room with Mario and Luigi's grandfather, and Mario's stern expression took him by surprise when he brought up the subject.
"When we learned that Sora's parents don't recognize him as their son, we believed something was wrong," Mario recalled. "Though they didn't forget him on purpose, his mother did question if she has a son. Especially since circumstances prevented Sora from going back home for some time. He's sixteen now, and I'm worried that if he doesn't get the support he needs, he'll never truly be happy. So, Luigi and I are considering adopting him. Will you welcome him into the family?"
"Absolutely not/yes!" Pio and Mia said together.
They looked at one another with surprise and confusion.
"They're divided!" Sora exclaimed with surprise.
"Mia, raising a teenager isn't like raising a kid," Pio argued. "We know that first hand."
"I know, but I feel terrible for Sora after hearing what happened!" Mia countered with sympathy. "No one likes to be alone in this world!"
Although Pietro and Mia loved each other, there were times when they were divided on what they felt was best for their sons. This was shown when both brothers quit their carpenter jobs to start their plumbing business. Mia was proud of them for breaking away from their abusive boss. Pio felt that their efforts would amount to nothing in the long run due to spending their life savings making their plumbing commercial back then.
"Pio, they're adults now," Mia reminded her husband.
"This is their first go watching over a teenage boy," Pio noted. "Besides, who's going to be his father?"
The brothers quickly realized that Sora would have two Dads if they didn't properly sort out the paperwork. All the while, the patriarch, Antonio Mario, listened to them while considering this change in family dynamic. While the brothers weren't married to their steady sweeties yet, there was no denying that they wanted to do this out of the kindness of their hearts.
"I don't see too much wrong with it," Antonio stated. "Let's welcome Sora into the family."
"Padre?" Pio asked his father in Italian.
Mia just smiled at this turn of events.
"Are you sure?" Luigi asked him. "I still want to help you with your leg."
"It's fine now, Luigi," Antonio reassured him. "The doctors were surprised at how fast I recovered. Do what makes you happy."
"Grazie," Luigi replied happily.
Antonio turned to Sora.
"I just have this to say to you," he began. "Life's all about give and take. If you help my grandsons, they'll help you in return."
Sora's expression became a serious one.
"Okay. I'll do whatever I can," Sora confirmed. "And thank you."
