Work Text:
Everything was now royally messed up. The world was wrong, her life was wrong, and she wasn’t sure how much more of it she could take. She was trapped in an endless cycle of pain, losing friend after friend, everyone dying dying dying. There was nothing she could do to stop it, nothing she could try to make it all go away. She was now alone in the universe, and there was nobody else around to stop her thoughts from going dark.
Once, she had Lily. Her best friend in the whole wide world, the only person who truly understood what she was going through. The only person who knew what it was like to grow up in the Muggle world and get forced into a whole new world, one that claimed to be better. They grew close fast, bonding over their favourite movies and what they were excited to learn about in this brand new world. Mary had been shy at first, hiding behind her braids, terrified that she would be a target like she was in the Muggle world. Her fears had come to life, but in a different way to what she was expecting: no one hated her for her skin colour, rather her blood type, of all things. As if she could help being a Muggle-born. As if she was any less than them, just because she did not understand all of their stupid references. With Lily there beside her, though, none of that had mattered. They had their inside jokes, and they made fun of the worst offenders behind their backs.
The war ruined everything. She could no longer see Lily as often, and one day she went off the map entirely, hiding away with her little family. Not that it had mattered in the end, she still ended up dead. Dead like everyone else she had known in this stupid world. This stupid, awful, messed up world.
What was the point of her being here anymore? She had nothing left here. She might as well go back to the Muggle world, start anew. The only issue was the memories that plagued her, but she would work out a solution. She had to. She needed to. She had to get away from the darkness inside.
Clutching the Daily Prophet that had announced her best friend's death, she came up with her plan. She would forge papers for the Muggle world, give herself qualifications that she would have earned if she had stayed there all those years ago. She would get herself settled, get herself a job, Confunding people if she had to, before locking all of her memories away. She no longer wanted them. She did not want to remember people long dead. She did not want to remember Lily’s laughter, because she knew she would never hear it again. She did not want to see Marlene’s dead body any longer. It was too much, too strong, too powerful. She needed to escape.
Everything went perfectly, and she held herself together long enough to get herself a new flat, deep in Lily’s birth city. One last tie to her dead best friend, before she forgot her forever. Sighing slightly, she sat on her new sofa, staring at that Daily Prophet article one last time before she set the blasted newspaper on fire. It was time.
She cast the charm, knocking herself into a strong coma. Her wand had split into a million shards upon the impact of the spell to her body, but she wouldn't need it anymore. She had no need for magic now. It was useless. It couldn’t bring back—
Mary woke up to her flat in disarray. There were ashes on her coffee table, and she must have accidentally shredded a twig on her way home and brought it in with her, as there were shards of wood all over her carpet. What a mess.
Glancing at her watch, she realised that her nap had been longer than expected, and she had to start getting ready for work. It felt like she was missing something, but she couldn’t figure out what it could be. No matter. That was a problem for a different day, as right now Mary had to get ready for work. It was her first day at this new job, and she couldn’t think of anything worse than losing it straight away!
