Work Text:
“Finally, it’s the weekend!” Mina started a conversation with her friends while heading back to the dorms. “I’m so excited to have some time to relax.”
“Yeah, I relate to that,” Sero agreed.
“Same,” Kirishima replied. Bakugo gave a slight grunt of agreement.
Denki, however, gave no signs that he even heard a word they were saying. Instead, he was looking at Jiro, who was talking to Momo down the pathway.
Jiro looked beautiful, just as she always did. The sunlight reflected off her in radiant reflection, highlighting her features in a warm glow. Her hair blew in the slight breeze. And as she laughed with Momo, Kaminari felt his heart skip a beat. Oh, how he loved her laugh.
“Man, you should just ask her out already,” Kirishima’s voice interrupted his thoughts.
“Huh? Ask who out?” Denki shook off his thoughts, turning to his red-haired friend.
Kirishima gave him a ‘seriously?’ look.
“Ears, you idiot! Who the f*** else?!” Bakugo cut in. “It’s not like you stare at any other girl anymore. F*****n annoying.”
Denki’s face flushed red. “I don’t stare at her!”
“Then what do you do?” Mina joined.
“I…” Kaminari couldn’t think of an answer to that without revealing his crush. “Well… um…”
“Hey, look, we’re back!” Denki rushed into the dorm building, zipping past Momo and Kyoka.
“What did you guys do to De- Kaminari?” Jiro asked when the rest of the Bakusquad made their way in. They didn’t quite know about the first-name basis thing, and she didn’t want to deal with a Mina freak-out right now.
“I told him to ask his crush out,” Kirishima stated.
“Kaminari has a crush?” Jiro questioned. There was a small pang in her chest at the words.
“Oh, totally,” Mina smirked. “We just haven’t gotten him to admit it yet.”
“Anyway, anyone want to do a class karaoke night? It’d be great for bonding!” Mina changed the subject. A lot of the class ended up joining, though some stayed in their rooms. And M****a was banned because they’d heard his taste in music before, and nobody wanted to relive that experience.
“We just need to ask Kaminari to join us,” Mina said.
“I can go get him,” Jiro volunteered and headed up to Kaminari’s dorm before anyone could say something.
Kyoka gently knocked on the door, and soon an electric blonde peeked out.
“Oh, hey Kyoka! How’s it going?” Denki opened the door wider.
“Mina wants to do a karaoke night. Was coming to get you if you want to participate,” Jiro answered.
“Okay, sounds fun!” Denki exited his room and headed to the elevator with Jiro. “I’m not the best singer, though.”
“Don’t worry, karaoke isn’t exactly about the quality of singing. It’s about having fun,” Jiro responded.
Denki smiled at her, and her heart skipped a beat. When had that started happening?
“Kami!” Mina exclaimed and jumped-hugged her electric friend when he arrived in the common room.
“Eek, get off me!” Denki stumbled back.
Mina luckily listened to him. “I’m so happy you’re joining our karaoke night! Come on, let’s get started!”
The group doing karaoke consisted of Mina, Kirishima, Kaminari, Jiro, Ochaco, Todoroki, Momo, Sero, Midoriya, Aoyama, and Hagakure. The other members of the class had refused for various reasons.
“Who wants to sing first?” Mina asked. Aoyama was the one to take the spot, and he sang a song in French so off-key that Kaminari worried the windows would shatter.
Denki smiled as he listened to his classmates singing. Currently, Todoroki and Midoriya were trying to sing a duet, but Todoroki kept messing up the lyrics, and it would through the green-haired boy off. It was fun to watch them attempt it, though.
“Kami!” Mina called when Izuku and Shoto were done with their song.
“What?” Kaminari asked.
“You’re the only one who hasn’t sung a song yet, get up here!” Mina insisted.
Kaminari slowly got up in front of his classmates and was handed a microphone by Mina. He hadn’t sung in front of people for years, and he was nervous, even if it was just his classmates.
“What should I sing?” Kaminari questioned.
“Hmmm…” Mina quickly scrolled through a list of songs before settling on one. “How about this?”
“Um… Okay, I guess I can do that,” Kaminari nodded. He took a deep breath as Mina began the video of the song lyrics.
Kaminari kept his eyes closed as he began the lyrics.
I heard he got you a penthouse
On the west side
When will he learn
That you’re afraid of heights?
(Song is Figure You Out by VOILA)
Kyoka’s jaw dropped the moment Denki started singing. He hit the notes of the song perfectly, getting every lyric correct in perfect English. (idk Japanese music, so I’m using English music; let’s pretend that makes sense)
The room went completely silent except for Denki’s singing. As the song progressed, Kaminari got lost in it. He forgot all about the people watching him, instead singing out the notes without a single care in the world. By the end of the song, he was beaming with joy.
When the song ended, everyone was quiet. Denki finally looked at his classmate’s shocked faces.
“Why are you all looking at me like that?” Denki asked, a light pink dusting his cheeks.
“You told me you were ‘not the best singer’,” Jiro stated. “But I beg to differ, that was the best singing I’ve heard all night. No offense to anyone else.”
Denki blushed harder. “Thank you, Ky-Jiro.”
“She’s totally right, that was amazing!” Mina exclaimed.
“You and Jiro should totally do a duet! You’d sound amazing together!” Hagakure added.
“Seriously, you have a talent,” Kirishima joined.
Kaminari gave them a sheepish smile, his cheeks red. “Thanks, guys.” His cheeks turned even redder when Sero mentioned he’d been filming the performance (as he had filmed everybody’s for later reference).
After that, everyone decided they were done with karaoke for the night and headed off to get ready for bed. The Bakusquad decided to have a sleepover in Kaminari’s room.
Kyoka was the first one there. Kaminari quickly greeted her and gestured her in.
“I believe everyone else is preparing snacks,” Denki explained while Jiro set up her sleeping bag for the night. “Can’t have a sleepover without snacks!”
“Yeah, definitely not. Just don’t eat too much candy again, not sure anyone can handle you on a sugar high right now,” Kyoka joked.
“I won’t be promising that,” Kaminari laughed. Jiro’s heart skipped a beat. Why did it keep doing that?
“Hey, Kyoka?”
“Yeah?”
“I was wondering, um… Well, I was thinking I may like to learn some instruments, and since you seem to know a lot about them, I was wondering if you could maybe teach me some. You don’t have to, I just-”
“Sure.”
“Wait, really? You would teach me?”
“I already taught you guitar, didn’t I? I think I can handle teaching you other instruments.”
Denki gave her a bright smile. “Thank you! I look forward to it! When would be best for that?”
“How about we start on Monday after school?”
“Perfect.”
