Music Lessons

Summary:

Kaminari gets music lessons from Jiro and plans a surprise.

Work Text:

“I’m so glad school is over for the day,” Mina started a conversation. “I’m exhausted.”
“Yeah, me too,” Kirishima agreed.
Everyone seemed pretty exhausted, except for Denki. For one, his quirk gave him quite a bit of energy, and he hadn’t maxed it out during training at all. And he was excited, as today would be his first music lesson with Jiro (since the school festival anyway).
“Maybe we can all just relax on the couch for a bit before we work on homework,” Sero decided.
“Okay, you guys have fun!” Denki started walking ahead, hoping to get to Jiro’s dorm before anyone could see him.
“Where are you going?” Mina asked.
“I have plans today,” Kaminari told her quickly before he was out of sight.
“What could he possibly have planned on a school day?” Mina wondered aloud.
Kaminari quickly stopped by his dorm, setting down his backpack and changing into more casual clothing. He combed through his hair a bit, then headed out the door.
As far as he could tell, most students were either down in the common room or in their dorms. So he was sure nobody saw him as he headed to Kyoka’s dorm, and knocked on the door.
Jiro opened the door pretty quickly, gesturing Denki in. She closed the door behind them.
“Alright, let’s get started,” Jiro stated. “I was thinking we can start with some basic stuff as a review.”
“Sounds good,” Denki agreed.
Kyoka did a quick review on basic music stuff. The different types of notes, music times, and solfege. Denki nodded along, and also sang the solfege scale for fun.
(solfege: do, re, mi, fa, so, la, ti)
“Clearly you already have practice singing,” Jiro commented.
“I took voice lessons,” Denki admitted. “Mostly just for fun.”
“Well, what instrument would you like to learn? Or should I just teach you more guitar?” Jiro asked.
“I’d love to learn more guitar,” Denki nodded. “I also want to learn how to write songs.”
“You want to write songs?”
“One day, yeah. It’d probably suck if I tried right now.”
“We can probably get into song writing. Maybe next lesson though, for now let’s review the guitar.”

Music lessons were scheduled for every Monday after school. These lessons had been going on for four weeks now, and somehow the Bakusquad still didn’t know what Denki’s Monday event was.
“You’re getting pretty good at writing lyrics,” Jiro complimented, looking over the new bit of lyrics Denki handed her. He often handed her bits and pieces of songs, never a fully finished one.
“Thanks, that means a lot coming from the song master,” Denki joked.
“Have you finished any songs? You only give me snippets,” Kyoka continued.
Denki’s face went a bit pink at the question. He rubbed the back of his neck nervously. “I… I haven’t finished one but there’s one that’s getting pretty close. I haven’t showed you any of that one though.”
“Why? If I’m allowed to ask that.”
“Well, um… It’s just-” Denki couldn’t answer the question. He wasn’t about to just tell Kyoka the song was about her and that he was planning to sing it for her on her birthday.
“It’s okay, you don’t have to answer. We can just move on to today’s lesson on the piano.”
Denki was a pretty fast learner when he put his mind to it. When he didn’t have a lesson, he would spend at least an hour after school working on his song for Jiro. Perfecting the lyrics, testing out different chord progressions and strumming patterns.
It was currently Friday, and Valentine’s Day was in a week. He’d practically ignored the Bakusquad all day, thinking about his song. He even went straight to his dorm without grabbing his usual after school snack and got to practicing. He had all the lyrics ready, all the notes written out. Everything was ready, he just needed to get used to singing it.
A knock on his door interrupted his practice. He sighed and got up to answer the door.
“Hey bro, it’s dinner time,” Kirishima told him.
Denki quickly checked the time, realizing his friend was right. He’d been working on the song for nearly three hours straight. His stomach growled.
“Great, I’m starving!” Denki began heading down with Kirishima.
“So… what song were you singing? I could hear you through the door before I knocked,” Kirishima started.
Denki’s face flushed red. “Well, um, it’s called ‘Skip A Beat’. I, uh, wrote it…”
“You can write songs? Since when?”
“Well, uh, Jiro’s been teaching me.”
“Is that what you’re always doing on Mondays?”
Denki nodded. “Did my song sound good? It’s the only one I haven’t had Kyoka look over.”
“Yeah, it sounded awesome!”
Their conversation stopped when they made it down to the common room, being greeted by classmates.
“Kamibabe, where have you been?” Mina asked while Denki sat with the rest of the Bakusquad.
“I was in my room,” Denki answered simply as he got himself a plate of food and joined everyone in eating.
“Doing what?” Sero asked.
“I was preparing a Valentine’s Day surprise…”
Kirishima gained a slight knowing smirk. “Oh, really?”
Denki slightly blushed, hearing his friend’s teasing tone. “Yep, and no, I won’t tell you guys what it is.”
“Fine by me,” Kirishima shrugged.
“That’s because you already know what it is,” Denki grumbled.
“Yeah, but I think I have a good idea who it’s for as well.”
“Who wants to have a slumber party? It’s Friday after all,” Mina suggested. The rest of the squad decided they might as well.
Guess song practice had to be put on hold.
