The Flower Girls

Summary:

Ilya and Shane tell the Pike kids they're getting married for real.

Work Text:

Shane had jitters, waiting for Hayden to pick up his FaceTime. Or maybe jitters was the wrong word. He wasn’t nervous; he was so excited he felt like he could burst. Butterflies, maybe.

They’d already crossed off their first FaceTime of the day, his parents, who had both cried with joy (though David had more of a proud welling of tears, while Yuna had openly shrieked and sobbed).

Next on the list was the best man.

“Hey, dude,” Hayden answered, rumpled and unshaven on the couch on their off day. “Oh. Hey, Rozanov. What’s up?”

“Hey,” Shane couldn’t hide his grin. “Are the kids in the room with you?”

“No?” He looked suspicious. “They’re in the playroom. Why?”

“We’re getting married.” Shane blurted it out, unable to hold it in any longer. “I proposed.”

“Suck it, Pike! You are never getting rid of me!”

“Oh my God! Holy shit!” Hayden’s jaw dropped. “For real?!”

Shane’s grin took up half his face, and Ilya couldn’t stand it for another second. He smacked repeated kisses on the top of his head, Hayden be damned.

“Yeah! This summer!” Shane laughed, nose crinkled.

“Holy fuck, dude! Congratulations!” Hayden beamed. “Jackie, get over here!”

“Got any plans in July?” Shane couldn’t stop smiling.

“Not anymore, holy shit!”

“We need your kids.” Ilya chipped in.

“Hayden, what is it?” Jackie’s voice came through the speaker.

“Shane’s getting married!” Hayden looked past the camera, amazement still all over his face, as the sound of her gasp echoed through the room.

“And Ilya! Ilya is also getting married! Hi, Jackie!”

“Oh my God!” Her head ducked into the frame, palm pressed over her heart. “You guys! Congratulations! Aww, I’m so happy for you!”

“Thanks, Jackie,” Shane laughed. His cheeks felt like they might freeze in the smile stuck to his face.

“When’s the wedding?!”

“We’re thinking July for, well, everything. Coming out. Getting married. All of it.”

Ilya watched Shane debrief the Pikes, so much fondness in his eyes that he couldn’t hold it back. He didn’t know if they’d ever get this, and part of him still didn’t believe it was actually happening. But it was. His fiancé was proudly telling his best friends about their engagement. About the proposal (at least, the safe for work parts). About their plans to finally just fucking be together, openly. And Shane looked so goddamn happy, he almost couldn’t bear it. He was happy to be with Ilya. Proud. He looked fucking elated, and Ilya thought his heart might jump out of his body.

Jackie teared up. Hayden jokingly complained that he hadn’t been told ahead of time. His voice sounded a little strained when he said, “No shit, man,” to Shane’s request that he be the best man.

In all honesty, Ilya found it touching to see how much Hayden supported them. He’d never say it to his face, but it meant a lot to him that Shane had such a good friend in his life. Fuck, he was getting too emotional, and it had already been an incredibly emotional twenty four hours.

“Put me on with the kids. We have to ask them something, too.”

God, his accent sounded thick. He tried to clear his throat and get it together so the kids wouldn’t struggle to understand him. By the time Ruby, Jade, and Arthur were fighting for space on camera, his excitement had thankfully eclipsed his sentimentality.

“Hi, Uncle Shane! Hi, Ilya!”

“Hi, girls!”

“I want to hold it!”

“Wait your turn! I get to say hi first!”

“Why?!”

“I’m older!”

“By three minutes!”

“Whatever!”

Ilya didn’t stop their bickering, enjoying the intensity with which the girls argued to say hello to their favorite uncles.

“Guys!” Hayden’s voice sounded through the speaker. “Listen to Uncle Shane and Ilya!”

“So, we’ve got some big news.” Shane grinned.

“We have a very big job for you.” Ilya took on a teasing, conspiratorial tone. “Is a top secret, very important job.”

The girls’ eyes widened, instantly hungry for information, while Arthur looked on, trying to understand what was happening.

“What is it?!”

“I wanna know!”

“I don’t know, do you think you are up to the task?” Ilya raised an eyebrow.

“Yes!”

“Tell us!”

Shane knew he had the world’s sappiest expression on his face as he watched Ilya toy with them, but he didn’t care.

“We all know that you are the best wedding planners in the world, yes?”

The girls nodded with gusto, in total agreement at their fabulous wedding skills.

“So we are thinking, maybe if you have time in your very busy schedule, we will need your help this summer.”

Ruby’s eyes widened, the first to process it.

“We’re getting married!” Shane laughed, and the girls immediately started screaming while Arthur put his hands over his ears.

“Of course, this is not the real wedding. This is just for the adults who did not see what a good job you did at our first wedding. Have to include your mom and dad, you know.”

“AHHHHH!” Jade kept shrieking.

“This is going to be so much fun. We can wear our princess dresses and we can pick a cake and we can paint our nails and we can—”

“Hang on, guys, keep listening.” Hayden laughed.

“So, we do have a specific job for you in mind.” Shane smiled. “If you’re not too busy, of course.”

“Do you know what a flower girl is?” Ilya smirked, and the chorus of screams started up all over again.
